Many know these texts by heart. Coincidentally, the texts are often part of the Proper of the Mass, including the entrance antiphon and/or Communion antiphon. It is possible to use some of these familiar hymns/songs as the entrance or Communion antiphon, especially when it is the specific antiphon of the day. Today s first Communion antiphon, Taste and see that the Lord is good quotes Psalm 34. Use it as the Communion antiphon and/or Communion processional. The selection of music for the responsorial psalm is not just a matter of taste or musical preferences. The issue is more nuanced than that. For example, Marty Haugen s Shepherd Me, O God makes a wonderful Communion processional psalm, but it is entirely too long as a responsorial. The setting (which is dear to my heart, too) can take longer than the Liturgy of the Word. The responsorial is a response to the first reading, but should not overpower it. That is one reason why we don t hear all the verses of the psalm each week. It s not just a pastoral decision. It has to do with the shape of the Liturgy of the Word at Mass, which is different from Liturgy of the Hours where musical settings can be the heart of the prayer. On the other hand, consider Joseph Gelineau s Psalm 23, My Shepherd Is the Lord (BB/MI 756). The refrain is straightforward and the verses are syllabic. It is not necessary to explain this parable, but it is necessary to live it if we are followers of Jesus. The Psalm (continued from page 46) I decided to consult Monsignor Rick Hilgartner, Executive Director of the Committee on Divine Worship at the USCCB, regarding the musical style of the responsorial psalm. I have his permission to share his words with our readers. I think you re right about some psalm settings they can overwhelm the rest of the Liturgy of the Word if they are too elaborate. I m all for contemporary music, but I think your example of the James Moore setting of Taste and See is an example of a beautiful setting that s just too much for the Responsorial Psalm, in part because it is just such a long piece that it would be easy to get lost in it, losing sight of the context of the readings. This really is a judgment call, I suppose, because it s not about a particular style or even a musical form (there might be some circumstances when a strophic hymn setting could work, especially if there is no cantor/psalmist to rely on). The danger, of course, is that it then comes down to what the musicians like their preferences easily become rules. Does anybody remember Good Samaritan Ointment? My grandmother used it on us kids for almost every skin ailment. The tin depicted the parable. It s still available! Check it out online. Is it the homily, music, celebration style? Often they go where they feel welcome, as Jesus instructed. A few brief words of welcome just before the opening hymn not only welcome the strangers, but give each member of the community the opportunity to be Christ for one another in faith. We know how Jesus treated Mary Magdalene, Martha and Mary, and the Good Samaritan. How can we do less? One of the common goals of both Vatican II and the New Evangelization is outreach to fallen away Catholics. Have they lost their faith, or have they just stopped coming to church? To what are we asking them to return? Why did they leave? What has changed at the parish level that could interest them to return? I don t think a sign on the front door or a banner will suffice (unless it contains a link to a website). We need creative ways of getting in touch. Can blogs, s, parish websites, phone calls, or a survey point us in a new direction? A word of welcome before Mass may help us reach out. On page 52 (next column) there are examples of greetings to welcome folks before liturgy. They are from In the Midst of the Assembly (ocp.org/9664) by yours truly. Words of welcome are most effective when memorized. P.S. Be sure to pray today for youthful pilgrims as they journey to Rio de Janeiro for World Youth Day (July 23 28). To be hospitable to another person sometimes requires us to inconvenience ourselves for another. It requires energy so does singing, listening to God s word, and processing to Communion. Active participation means more than just saying words. The challenge is to be human and reverent, simultaneously, as we welcome. Ask the lector or the musician to speak these or similar words of welcome: Jesus tells us to welcome the stranger. So that there are no strangers in our midst, please turn and welcome the people around you. Jesus said, He who welcomes me welcomes the One who sent me. Let us greet Christ in one another by welcoming those around us. We come together from many places in our life journey. Some here are living with joy and new life, and others are experiencing pain. But, so that no one is alone on the journey, please turn and welcome the people around you. We come together today as sons and daughters of the Lord at his table. Let us welcome one another as honored guests in God s house. We come together here today to celebrate a foretaste of the heavenly kingdom where someday Christ, as our host, will greet everyone. Let us be Christ for one another by welcoming each other to this holy house. After people greet one another, create a centering moment through silence or a prelude or choral antiphon. Then sing the processional. Today s Gospel creates an ideal occasion to sing the Lord s Prayer together.
