Today s first reading needs to be carefully prepared if it is to be effective. It s a reminder that all things are passing. Today s Gospel encourages us to be rich in what matters to God, not to build our kingdom here. Here are a few words for musicians inspired by today s readings. The call to serve in a liturgical ministry is a call to deepen our relationship with Christ by serving his people through a particular task or talent. Music ministry requires talent, but also calls for a more demanding level of skill than some other ministries. It is more time-consuming than people realize. Musicians are called upon to study, prepare, teach, and perform regularly. (I haven t mentioned coordinating musical events or playing for special liturgies and devotions.) Often they must tutor others such as cantors, choirs, instrumentalists, and singing celebrants. Music ministers think of themselves as professional musicians, not because of a paycheck, but because leading the musical prayer of the worshipping community requires professional skills. Some musicians may need to surrender their feelings of inadequacy. Talent is God-given. Skills can be acquired. Some may realize they are more competent than they think, with study and practice. Others may need to give up the idea that they are so competent that they cannot be replaced. It can happen. Reflect on today s readings. Develop your God-given talents. Don t build kingdoms. Let us serve one another and others graciously. Put on Christ. Elaine Rendler-McQueeney If Today You Hear His Voice (Psalm 95) (Soper) BB/MI 798 CP3 55 H 137 J3 71 UC 135 OCP Come unto Me (B. Some people have labored skillfully a whole lifetime, but the fruits of their labor go to others who did nothing. What good comes from hard work? Everything is vanity. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 90:3 4, 5 6, 12 13, 14 & 17 If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. SECOND READINGC colossians 3:1 5, 9 11 Since you now belong to Christ, set your heart on things above rather than on things of earth. For in Christ there is not Greek or Jew, slave or free person. Christ is all and in all. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. GOSPEL Luke 12:13 21 Jesus told a parable about the rich man who stored up all his wealth in order to eat, drink and be merry. God told him, You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you. In this way Jesus encouraged people to grow rich, not for themselves, but in God s sight. COMMUNION ANTIPHON Wisdom 16:20 You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste. Or John 6:35 I am the bread of life, says the Lord; whoever comes to me will not hunger and whoever believes in me will not thirst. 55

The second reading from Hebrews is a sermon and there is scholarly debate about its authorship. It begins: Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. The writer uses Abraham as an example of one who followed God on faith alone, not knowing where he was going, but faithfully following wherever God asked. In a nutshell, the Gospel reminds us what it is to be a faithful servant. As we celebrate this Year of Faith as well as the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, these readings prove timely. Abraham, too, was asked to leave what he knew and to trust, contrary to the hardships he encountered, that God knew the way. And Abraham wandered for forty years! Yet, he still had faith. He had to surrender much more on his journey. He was asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac, whom he loved much. If the second reading is read in its entirety, we hear that Abraham reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol. The Church has been sailing through stormy weather in recent times. We look to Abraham and we walk in faith. The mention of the innocent Isaac tugs at our heartstrings. We have left a tent and continue to look for the Promised Land. In the meantime, we continue to wander. Let us journey in faith. In Welcoming the Word in Year C: With Burning Hearts (Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2006) the late Good Samaritan Sister Verna Holyhead refers to Elizabeth as the older woman of autumn grace and Mary as the young woman of the springtime of salvation who need each other, as the generations still do. If Elizabeth needed her [Mary s] young energy, Mary must have needed Elizabeth s mature companionship (p. 11). Is there an older woman of autumn grace that you might want to call today? Life is short! As we celebrate the feast of Mary in this year of remembering Vatican II, let us also recall that the Blessed Virgin Mary was a subject of debate. Since the Council was ecumenical, the bishops tried to be sensitive to the other denominations, some of whom had issues with the role of Mary in the Catholic Church. Chapter VIII of Lumen Gentium (Light of the World) is devoted to Mary (Mariology). The feast of the Queenship of Mary was moved in 1969 from May 31 to August 22 (the Octave of the Assumption) to link Mary s Assumption with her Queenship. Today, consider using music from different Marian feasts from throughout the year, e.g., The Angel Gabriel (BB 59), My Soul Rejoices, and Regina Caeli (BB 168). Music majors, besides carrying a full schedule of classes, must find time to practice every day. Practicing is a relentless responsibility for them. As we all know, that responsibility doesn t end at graduation it is a regular part of a musician s life. Dr. Alexander McCurdy, with whom I studied organ during college, once told me that he played through the hymns before his church service every single Sunday. I was stunned. Even my teacher practiced! He explained how an organist must be absolutely certain of the notes so as to be able to focus on other accompanying skills: listening to the congregation, breathing with them, changing registration, and praying/playing each different verse of the text with them. Attendance at conferences is an important way of energizing ourselves for ministry. But conferences do not allow us time to develop that which is most essential to calling ourselves liturgical musicians: the ability to make music skillfully. Conferences inspire us to go home and do the necessary homework, to study and attend to the relentless demand of practicing. Why not treat yourself to some organ lessons? The organ (not a keyboard that produces organ sounds) is a difficult instrument to handle. Organists must be able to play with hands and feet coordinated, with a technique quite different from piano. It comes more naturally to some than others. One final tip for amateur organists: real organists don t play in stocking feet. They wear shoes. Vatican II called for the use of the vernacular in the liturgy. For the United States at the time, vernacular meant English, not necessarily American English, but English. Some of the initial attempts at writing liturgical music were what we today call ritual text those that describe a particular moment of the liturgy. Setting the musical texts for the Ordinary of the Mass followed quickly. Equally significant was the introduction of Scripture texts in the vernacular. We needed vernacular psalm texts for the responsorial psalm. The responsorial was put into the liturgy after the first reading from the Old Testament, both of which were introduced only as recently as the 1969 Rite. Next, texts flourished that would give the assembly access to singing much of the Scripture of the new threeyear Lectionary, born of Vatican II. Truly, the work of the musicians helped Catholics learn Scripture as well as catechetics by heart. By the eighties, OCP recognized that the vernacular meant more than using just English in liturgy. Areas of the country were using other vernacular languages. Bilingual music went into BB/MI. At first only texts were translated, but through the work of Hispanic, Vietnamese, Filipino, and other Catholic composers, these sounds and texts have joined the treasure of European American Catholic music. Together we express our growing American and global Catholicism. Coming full circle, bilingual includes Latin, too. When the priest said, The Lord be with you, the response, And with your spirit was mixed in with some embarrassed And also with you responses. Old habits die hard. Imagine the reaction on the First Sunday of Advent 1964, when the priest faced the assembly for the first time, and spoke in English, The Lord be with you. I m not sure who was more perplexed the priest or the people. Whatever your perspective, Vatican II has impacted the life of the Church. As we move into the New Evangelization, it is valuable to review the past. Here are a few OCP publications to help you, and good vacation reading! Full, Conscious and Active Participation, Michael Prendergast, ed. (ocp.org/11922). Reflective essays of interest to liturgical ministers on Vatican II s call to active participation in the liturgy. Voices from the Council, Michael Prendergast and M.D. Ridge, eds. (ocp.org/12222). A series of interviews with people who were present at the Council. Keep the Fire Burning: The Folk Mass Revolution, Ken Canedo (ocp.org/6152). A reflection on the music within the context of its time and its assimilation into worship. We must remember that the ideas put forth by the Council did not originate with Vatican II. They had been fermenting for a long time. The time was ripe for change. This current era of the Church will provide many generations to come with material for theses, dissertations, and prayerful study!
