3 Getting Your Music Published Rick Modlin riting music for the liturgy is a rewarding thing. As a composer, I never tire Wof hearing when a parish is using a piece of mine. After all, that s why composers write to have their music used. Getting your music into the hands of more people is the goal of becoming published, but it can be daunting and even a little mysterious. Having worked on both sides of the publishing process for twenty-five years, I ve picked up a few hints along the way. If you re an aspiring composer (or just curious), this article is for you. Rick Modlin is manager of music development for OCP. He has recorded a jazz album (Joy to the World, ocp.org/10993), written liturgical and choral music, and arranged many OCP compositions. He is an active parish musician in the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon. What happens when music is sent to a publisher? The ways in which publishing companies accept new material for publication can vary considerably in the details, but the basic flow is: 1. New work is received, 2. then reviewed, 3. then declined or 4. accepted; if accepted, the new work is 5. put under contract, 6. then edited and engraved (typeset), 7. then released to the public. The order and/or concurrence of these steps may vary slightly, but that essentially is the publishing process. What you need to know as a composer about the details Publishers receive music in different ways. Some publishers do not accept any unsolicited material. Those that do have an open submission process (like OCP) usually have guidelines about how to submit new material. Follow these guidelines closely. If you have a question about the submission process, save yourself some uncertainty: contact the publisher and ask before submitting something. Publishers get lots of submissions. The review process takes time. Be patient. But be gently persistent too. If the submissions guidelines say that you ll receive a reply within three months, then on the third-month-and-one-day, if you haven t received a reply, send a cheerful inquiry. Publishers prefer to spend their time on music that they are going to publish, rather than on music that they re not. That may seem obvious, but the point for you as a composer is that if your piece is declined without comment, let go of the urge to find out why. Unless you already have a relationship with the publisher, you re probably not going to get detailed comments. Instead, send your music to another publisher, or set it aside and write something else (And see the last word below!). If your piece is accepted, congratulations! The hard part now is to be patient again. Publishers typically release different types of publications, all of which may have different schedules for publication. Your music might be on a six-month track for getting published as a single octavo, or it might be wanted for a project that is three 18

Sing about mercy again! A year is a short time for us to comprehend the wideness of God s mercy. We have sung about mercy, but it takes time for its implications to secure a place in our psyches, our hearts, our minds, and most of all, to result in our actions! The question for each of us remains: To whom do we need to show mercy? Having celebrated the Year of Mercy, most of us will be more attentive to the Word itself in today s celebration. The entrance antiphon begins, You are merciful to all, O Lord and the dismissal Prayer over the People asks God to pour out a spirit of compunction (regret, penitence, sorrow for sin) on us and by your mercy may [we] merit the rewards you promise. The first reading from the prophet Joel calls God gracious and merciful while the responsorial psalm begs God to be merciful to us! In the reading from 2 Corinthians, Saint Paul describes now as a very acceptable time! Matthew directs us, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray. Let each of us ask the question, To whom do I need to show mercy? The year of mercy may yield abundant fruit this year. Let Today s Liturgy help your people begin the journey with an entrance processional such as There s a Wideness in God s Mercy. Consider teaching/praying Bernadette Farrell s Renew Me, Lord, sure to be a new favorite! (See teaching tips for Renew Me, Lord on page 36.) ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Wisdom 11:24, 25, 27 You are merciful to all, O Lord, and despise nothing that you have made. You overlook people s sins, to bring them to repentance, and you spare them, for you are the Lord our God. FIRST READING Joel 2:12 18 (219) The Lord is slow to anger and rich in kindness. The faithful return with their whole hearts, fasting and repenting. All God s people gather together before the Lord for mercy. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 51:3 4, 5 6ab, 12 13, 14 & 17 Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 5:20 6:2 Paul implored the Corinthians to be reconciled to God right away. As Christ carried their sins upon the cross, so can they bear his holiness within them, if they turn to him. Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION See Psalm 95:8 If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. GOSPEL Matthew 6:1 6, Jesus warned the disciples against performing religious acts only to attract the attention of others. In giving alms, praying and fasting, Christians are to conduct themselves in such a way that no one will know, except God, who sees all things. COMMUNION ANTIPHON cf. Psalm 1:2 3 He who ponders the law of the Lord day and night will yield fruit in due season. 33
