2 WELCOME to the PARISH of ST. FRANCIS, BRUNSWICK and ST. MARY, PETERSVILLE, MARYLAND My Dear Friends in Christ, Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD. Psalm 27:13 Last, Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in northern Mexico City. The shrine was built near the hill of Tepeyac where Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. The Basilica houses the original tilma (or cloak) of Juan Diego, which holds the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There the Holy Father offered the following thoughts in his homily. How appropriate for us (and for all people) as we make this Lenten journey: On that morning, [on December 12, 1531 when Mary appeared as Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego] Juanito experienced in his own life what hope is, what the mercy of God is. He was chosen to oversee, care for, protect and promote the building of this Shrine. On many occasions he said to Our Lady that he was not the right person; on the contrary, if she wished the work to progress, she should choose others, since he was not learned or literate and did not belong to the group who could make it a reality. Mary, who was persistent with that persistence born from the Father s merciful heart said to him: he would be her ambassador. In this way, she managed to awaken something he did not know how to express, a veritable banner of love and justice: no one could be left out in the building of that other shrine, the shrine of life, the shrine of our communities, our societies and our cultures. We are all necessary, especially those who normally do not count because they are not up to the task or because they do not have the necessary funds to build all these things. God s Shrine is the life of his children, of everyone in whatever condition, especially of young people without a future who are exposed to endless painful and risky situations, and the elderly who are unacknowledged, forgotten and out of sight. The Shrine of God is our families in need only of the essentials to develop and progress. The Shrine of God is the faces of the many people we encounter each day Am I not your mother? Am I not here? Do not let trials and pains overwhelm you, she tells us. Today, she sends us out anew; as she did Juanito, today, she comes to tell us again: be my ambassador, the one I send to build many new shrines, accompany many lives, wipe away many tears. Simply be my ambassador by walking along the paths of your neighborhood, of your community, of your parish; we can build shrines by sharing the joy of knowing that we are not alone, that Mary accompanies us. Be my ambassador, she says to us, giving food to the hungry, drink to those who thirst, a refuge to those in need, clothe the naked and visit the sick. Come to the aid of those in prison, do not leave them alone, forgive whoever has offended you, console the grieving, be patient with others, and above all beseech and pray to God. And in the silence tell him what is in our heart. Am I not your mother? Am I not here with you? Mary says this to us again. Go and build my shrine, help me to lift up the lives of my sons and daughters, who are your brothers and sisters. In his visit to Mexico, the places he visits, the gesture he makes, the words he offers, the Holy Father is living out the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. I encourage you to read all of what he has said here (website of the Holy See) and to see the profound gift he is giving us as we seek to live out these works of mercy as well. This week we will be focusing on the corporal work of mercy of visiting the sick and the spiritual work of mercy of instructing the ignorant. Are there people we know who are sick or lonely, people we can visit or call or reach out to so that they feel less isolated, less distant? Is there someone who we can help, not only in matters of faith but in any area? Someone we can teach or help? In these ways, as our Holy Father reminds us, we too serve as ambassadors for God, to help God build the shrine of those in need. May God bless you and your families during this Lenten season. Peace, Administrator, Saint Francis Saint Mary

The opportunity to take this survey online will probably end this week. They do want to know about the needs and status of all the parishes of the Baltimore Archdiocese, including St Francis-St Mary. On your internet browser, type in bemissionarydisciples.org. You will get a gray picture of Pope Francis; scroll down and you will see a red box on the right side "Take the Survey"; click that and you will be asked what parish you attend; choose "St Francis (Brunswick)" and go from there. Unfortunately, they do not list us as St Francis- St Mary parish; perhaps you could mention that in one of the remarks boxes. It would be nice to have both churches recognized. Thanks! Fasting and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fasting and Abstinence from Meat. There is a limit of one full meal on these days for all between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat for all who have reached their 14 th birthday.

Children in our elementary classes received donation boxes on February 8th. During Lent, encourage your child to do small chores to earn money to give towards this effort. Before Easter, children may bring their boxes to class or drop them off at the parish office. The High Point of Prayer Prayer doesn t get any better than the Mass. Since the earliest days of the Church, the Mass has been the high point of Christian prayer, and the source of Christians strength and courage. Jesus wanted it to be that way. At the Last Supper, He took bread and broke it, saying, This is my Body. Then he took a cup of wine and blessed it, calling it the blood of the covenant (Matthew 26:26-28). He then commanded His apostles: Do this in memory of Me (Luke 22:19). Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration isn t just for adults, but for teens as well. Come spend some quiet time in the presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist following the 10:00 Mass on the first Sunday of each month. Start this devotion by stopping in for 15 minutes to say the Rosary, pray for others and reflect on Jesus great love for you. Help Needed If you feel called to give your time to help our youth, we need you. There are several areas where we can use your service. Do you have an hour or more that you can give to the Program? Call the parish office to offer your help. Adult Sometimes we get caught up in the secular world harboring on all that we don t have; i.e., the latest tech gadget, a new car, a better paying job, etc. We all want to improve our lives and those of our children. However, taking time to count our blessings each and every day will keep us focused on what s important, like a loving family, friends, a job that pays the bills, and a God who will not abandon us (John 14:18). If we dwell on what we have, we will not miss what is not in our reach. What are you grateful for?

Catholic education is the foundation of building a strong future church, and creating future saints. For every $2 we raise, the Archdiocese will add $1 into our endowment fund, which is unique to only our school. Our goal at the end of the school year is to raise $300,000, for a total of $450,000 with the match from the AOB. This endowment fund will not only help families that receive tuition assistance it also helps all students by keeping your parish school financially independent.
