2 My Dear Friends in Christ, The LORD sets captives free. The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who were bowed down; The LORD loves the just. The LORD protects strangers. The LORD sustains the fatherless and the widow. Ps. 146:7-9 It is a beautiful and tender image: Pope Francis, dressed in surgical scrubs, holding a baby in the neo-natal intensive care unit of Rome s San Giovanni Hospital. He visited with premature babies and their parents to offer prayerful support and encouragement. He followed that visit with one to a hospice to meet with the terminally ill where he embraced a terminally ill boy and girl. Each month during this Holy Year of Mercy, Francis spends one Friday afternoon outside the Vatican performing an act of mercy. Here, he wanted to send a message about respecting life at all stages, from its start to natural death. In this simple way, the Holy Father is preaching not just the value of life but breaking open the very words offered above by the psalmist. Pope Francis used the simple gesture of visiting and being present to those who were bowed down by sickness, for some their own and for others, their children to let these people know God was present and that they were not alone. In each case, the Pope spent only a few minutes listening to and talking with people. But, in this simple, humble gesture, we have the antidote to the complacency railed against in our first reading and the response to the challenge made in our Gospel to recognize the needs of others. God is calling us beyond ourselves to reach out to others, most especially those in need. You and I are the way that God does what was promised through the psalmist. Ours are the hands God uses to caress the suffering; ours the feet to reach and set free the captives; ours the ears to hear the cry of those besieged and tormented; ours the eyes to see and respond to those who are struggling. We can get so caught up in all of the things that we cannot do and forget how simple it can be. Take some time this week (and as often as you can) to be intentional about performing an act of mercy. Be intentional (and creative and dynamic as Jesus taught us in last week s Gospel) about reaching out. In a special way, I want to thank Rose Elfrey and her whole crew that made the Saint Francis/Saint Mary picnic such a good (and successful!) time. I must admit that Father Limmer and I were both a little disappointed that the desert judging was cancelled but we both agreed to continue training this year so that we can be ready should the need arise next year. The picnic is more than just a successful fundraiser. It is a time to come together, laugh, eat and enjoy each other s company. That s a great way to build up the Body of Christ. Thanks again, to all those who worked so hard! Peace, WELCOME to the PARISH of ST. FRANCIS, BRUNSWICK and ST. MARY, PETERSVILLE, MARYLAND

Adult Faith Formation One of Mary s many names is Mystical Rose which is where the rosary derived its name. It originally was prayed by the less educated class in the Middle Ages who could memorize the prayers and meditate on the mysteries of Jesus and Mary daily. The prayers consisted of 150 Our Fathers instead of reading 150 psalms. Later, ten Hail Marys were substituted and said after one Our Father. St. Dominic (d. 1221) is responsible for the widespread praying of the rosary through his preaching. Pope John Paul II added five new Mysteries of Light or Luminous Mysteries for the meditation of specific events in the life of Jesus (The Baptism of Our Lord, Wedding at Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom, The Transfiguration, and The Institution of the Eucharist). The other well known Mysteries are the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious. (Catholic Customs and Traditions, Greg Dues, p 39, 149)
