Bishop Guglielmone has officially assigned Father as Parochial Vicar to assist Msgr. McInerny at Stella Maris Catholic Church, Sullivan s Island effective September 10 th. As previously mentioned, Fr. Bob Higgins is in residence at the Cathedral rectory and will be covering the 7am daily Mass at St. Mary s Monday Friday. Fr. Higgins is also the chaplain to the State s Port Authority to attend to the spiritual needs of the crew for the cargo ships and cruise ships that dock in the Charleston Harbor. Typically, the crews do not have the necessary papers to necessary to attend Holy Mass at local churches and so Fr. Higgins celebrates Mass for them aboard their ships. In the coming weeks you will notice some maintenance to the campus and buildings of St. Mary s. The rectory and parish hall will be undergoing much needed exterior repairs and painting. The rotted wood on the Hasell St. exteriors of both buildings will be repaired and repainted. I have also commissioned some improvements to the grounds around the church building. A brick walkway will be installed around the back of the church and various plantings of grass, shrubs and flowers throughout the historic parish graveyard will be installed. Please note that while these much needed repairs are being completed the courtyard will NOT be available for parking on weekdays and weekends beginning on Thursday, September 13 th. Hear Mass daily; it will prosper the whole day. All your duties will be performed the better for it, and your soul will be stronger to bear its daily cross. The Mass is the most holy act of religion; you can do nothing that can give greater glory to God or be more profitable for your soul than to hear Mass both frequently and devoutly. It is the favorite devotion of the saints. -- St. Peter Julian Eymard

5 Christian Formation News Registration packets were mailed to families with school age children Friday. If you did not receive this packet and would like to register your child, please contact Dan Lord at ext. 233 or to be mailed a packet. Thee are also a few packets in the vestibule of the church. We strongly encourage all children from grades K4-8, who are not currently in the Catholic School system, to attend Christian Formation classes. Catechesis at every age is vital for the proper and ongoing formation of the Christian heart and mind. Please give your child the inestimable gift of learning the Catholic Faith at every level. b Classes meet on Sunday from 10:45am-11:45am beginning September 16 th b Fee is $35.00 per child b Sacramental policy reminder: In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, children preparing to receive either sacrament must attend, at the very minimum, TWO FULL YEARS of Christian Formation classes if they are not in our Catholic School system. This means a child who is to receive First Holy Communion in 2 nd grade must have already completed the 1 st grade class before moving on to the 2 nd grade and the reception of the Sacrament. The same for a child preparing for Confirmation (must have attended 7 th grade class before moving on to the 8 th grade class). No more than three classes per year can be missed during sacramental preparation. This policy is meant to ensure your child has the best formation possible and is in no way deficient in the knowledge he or she should have prior to receiving the sacraments. Interested in becoming Catholic? Do you have a friend or family member who is looking for answers about Christ and his Church? Register for RCIA classes today! If you would like more information or would like to register, please contact Dan Lord at ext. 233 or DanLord4444@ gmail.com. RCIA classes begin September 19 th in the Cathedral Lecture Hall. 6 40 Days For Life 2012 Fall Campaign September 26 - November 4: 40 Days for Life is an international campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil on public sidewalks in front of abortion facilities. It was founded in 2004 by a small group in a little Texas town frustrated with the lack of concern or participation in prayer at the local site. 40 days is now the largest coordinated prayer campaign to end abortion in history! Since it went national in 2007 (when Charleston first participated) there have been many successes: more then 525,000 participants; 5,928 lives documented spared from abortion; 69 abortion industry workers, including managers, have quit; 23 abortion facilities closed following 40 days campaigns; and 15,000 participating church congregations! Some Upcoming $0 Days for Life Events Mark your calendars! The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen. Resources for Life Birthright: Are you pregnant and in need of help? Birthright is here to help. Lots of information on the website. 7 South Carolina Felician Sisters Receive Highest National Award 35 th Annual Lumen Christi Award Recipient to Receive $50,000 Grant for Ministry and Diocese CHICAGO Aug. 22, 2012 Catholic Extension today announced that it has named the Felician Sisters of Kingstree, S.C. the recipients of its 35 th Annual Lumen Christi ( Light of Christ ) Award. This national award was established as Catholic Extension s highest honor and is presented annually to a priest, religious or lay person who has demonstrated how the power of faith can transform lives and communities. Lumen Christi Award recipients have devoted their lives to serving the poor in the most under-resourced dioceses in the United States and to fostering Catholic communities that build faith, inspire hope and ignite change. The Felician Sisters will receive the Lumen Christi Award at a ceremony in Kingstree and a Mass and reception in Charleston, S.C. on September 12 and 13, The Felician Sisters Sister Mary Susanne Dziedzic, CSSF, Sister Mary Johnna Ciezobka, CSSF and Sister Mary Jacqueline Benbenek, CSSF were nominated by Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone of the Diocese of Charleston for this honor. In the spirit of Catholic Extension s mission to build faith, inspire hope and ignite change through supporting poor mission dioceses throughout the U.S., they will receive a $50,000 grant to be shared equally between their ministry and the Diocese of Charleston. With this funding, the Sisters plan to expand the services they offer and also bring a fourth Sister into their ministry. Bishop Guglielmone described the Sisters ministry in his nomination letter. These religious women have worked tirelessly to bring the love and mercy of Christ to some of the most disadvantaged and economically challenged people in our part of the country, he said. We made a pact when we first moved here that we would be present to the people, that it would be our main ministry. We will be present to the neighbors, we will be present to the church, said Sister Johnna. The Sisters have transformed a community of violence and poverty and have brought hope to Thorne Avenue, a historically disadvantaged part of town where the Sisters planted roots and built their ministry. From virtually nothing, the Sisters have launched a food pantry, clothing closet, meal program, cooking classes, an after-school tutoring program and much more to serve people in need. The Sisters work and live on Thorne Avenue, among the people they serve, which has helped them greatly in learning the needs of the community. In 20 years, their ministry has grown and expanded into several buildings that line Thorne Avenue and serve several hundreds of people each month. About Catholic Extension: Catholic Extension uniquely contributes to the growth and vibrancy of the church in the U.S. by strategically investing in poor mission dioceses to unleash the power of faith that transforms hearts, lives and society. Based in Chicago, this national organization provides funding resources to dioceses and parishes through programs and services investing in people, infrastructure and ministries. This support is given based on need, as well as passion and commitment to the growth of the Catholic faith. Since 1905, Catholic Extension has distributed more than $500 million to communities across America.
