The ministry of Acolyte is one of the final steps towards Sacred Orders; an acolyte assists the priest and deacon at the altar, he is an ordinary minster of Holy Communion and may assist in the purification of the sacred vessels at Holy Mass. 4 Spring Lenten 40 Days for Life Campaign March 5-April 13 This Spring campaign in Charleston we are happy to have our local young adults again at the helm through the leadership of Sarah Allen as the new Director of 40 Days and member of Lucis Via Catholic Young Adults Group (ages 18-35). 40 Days of prayer and fasting will begin worldwide Ash Wednesday, March 5 th, through Palm Sunday April 13 th. The Charleston Women s Medical Center 1312 Ashley River Rd. in West Ashley The 24 hour Vigil date for both Cathedral and St. Mary s parishes is Sat. March 29 th. Our Knights of Columbus do a great job covering the night hours but we need prayer supporters during the day! For questions or to sign up call Cheryle at Cathedral or Jim at St. Mary Or to learn more or sign up visit w w w. 4 0 d ay s f o r l i f e. com/charleston. Lucis Via Catholic Young Adults Group (ages 18-35) Check out our web site to learn about local Bible studies, charities, and social events! Ignite your Faith. Get plugged in. For questions, please contact Richard White at or LucisViaCharleston@gmail.com The Saint Vincent de Paul Society WHAT IS IT? The last Sunday of every month we are at the doors of the church with yellow bags begging for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP). But what is this society that asks all of us to give generously to help the unfortunate many in our city? The VDP was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a young law student, together with several of his classmates and a newspaper editor. Its mission was to help alleviate the extreme poverty in Paris and it was placed under the protection of St. Vincent de Paul, a French priest who had lived two centuries earlier and had spent his entire life helping the poor and fostering the formation of religious orders that made charity their name and their mission. Soon after its foundation the SVDP spread rapidly and in 1845 the first United States Conference was organized. Today it covers the entire country and continues to embrace the original mission to help the poor and less fortunate among us, thus fulfilling the Gospel mandate to see Jesus in our brothers and sisters and come to their assistance. In South Carolina there are three Councils and in the Coastal Council there are nine Conferences, covering the entire area between Georgetown and Hilton Head. The Peninsula Conference is comprised of 36 members, parishioners of the Cathedral and of St. Mary of the Annunciation. We are all volunteers and, in the spirit of the Gospel, we go two by two to visit the poor in their homes, determine needs and provide. WE NEVER give money to those we visit, but pay bill directly to creditors. Because our only expense is the help line telephone bill, 99% of what is given to us is spent to help those we assist. Below is the first of our monthly reports to you who provide us with funds and groceries to carry out our ministry to the poor. January 2014 funds collected by Cathedral and St. Mary: $3, $4, Bills Paid $1, Balance 14 bags of groceries given out 43 families assisted Did You Know?
