St. John Chrysostom St. John was born in Antioch of Syria (344) and baptized by Patriarch Melece (374); he retired to the solitude around Antioch. Ordained deacon in 381 (381), and Priest (386). He preached and commented the whole Bible to the faithful. Elected Patriarch of Constantiople (398). He denounced the cupidity of Empress Eudoxia and was unjustly exiled several times. He suffered much, being dragged from one place to another for 3 years. He died in Comanus (Sep. 14, 407). His eloquence earned him the title of Chrysostom, which means Golden-mouthed. 4 YOUTH CORNER Sunday School: Sunday School is going to start on Sunday, September 30, 2018 and will end on Sunday, June 2, Grades: Sunday School is for children from Kindergarten to 7 th Grade. Curriculum: We will start an improved curriculum, which will include teaching your children about the faith, doing charity work, play practice, and learning the songs from the Divine Liturgy so they can participate. We will also be preparing the students for the First Reconciliation, emphasizing the importance of Confession as a Sacrament to be practiced often, and living out the meaning of Holy Communion. Forms: Sunday School registration forms, curriculum, and calendar of events are available on the church website (see the Sunday School section) and at the back of the church. SAMYA Group (Youth Association): Who: SAMYA is for people ages 13 to 18, from 8th grade to Senior year of High School. About SAMYA: The purpose of SAMYA is for the youth of the church to bond with each other, grow spiritually, have fun, and find support through the very tricky teenage years. We are refreshing the program this year so that it is more driven by what the teenagers want to learn, want to experience and what we know they need to live godly and fulfilled lives. SAMYA will also be working with the newly created SoCal Melkite Youth and Young Adult group so that they bond and learn from Melkite youth in Southern California. If you have a teenager, please have them come meet us. We meet on the first and third Sunday of the month; with regular meetings beginning in September. Our next meeting is September 16. We invite all teens to join us and find out more about the group and to come together. About SAYA: College and work are tough environments where one can practice their faith. Meeting a variety of people, engaging in the politics of the real-world, and being pressured on who they are and what they want to do in life are just some of the trials they go through. They are surrounded by the world who tells them that their faith is not important. However, in SAYA, they can bond with like-minded people: those who love their faith, their church, and have opportunities to discuss modern topics that pertain to their faith and their role in society as they become young professionals. SAYA will also be working with the newly created SoCal Melkite Youth and Young Adult group so that they bond and learn from Melkite youth in Southern California. SAYA meets on the second Sunday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in Fr. Musil s office. 6 First SAMYA Meeting Reflection By Tarik Dugum During our first meeting back from summer, SAMYA brought forward two new amazing leaders, Shadi Jubrail and Nurha Chahayed. This past Sunday, we had a great meeting where we had 12 people attending. This year looks so wonderful for SAMYA as it is a fresh start. We had crepes made by Shadi and they were delicious. We also got to know each other by telling others about our favorite color and Youtuber. SAMYA is a group for teens from 13 to 18. It is a lot of fun and I encourage all teens to join.
