4 YOUTH CORNER Sunday February 3, 2019: We will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord to the Temple at both liturgies. We request all young men to get dressed in white shirts and dark pants; they will participate in the procession of the liturgy holding candles and then they will receive a special blessing at the end of the liturgy. Sunday School: Sunday School is for children from Kindergarten to 7 th Grade, every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Curriculum: We will start an improved curriculum, which will include teaching your children about the faith, doing charity work, play practice, and learning the songs from the Divine Liturgy so they can participate. We will also be preparing the students for the First Reconciliation, emphasizing the importance of Confession as a Sacrament to be practiced often, and living out the meaning of Holy Communion. Parents of Sunday School youth are respectfully reminded to ensure our students participate in our program to the fullest extent possible. About SAYA: College and work are tough environments where one can practice their faith. A Scholarship: Thomas Aquinas College Summer High School Program Scholarship for their July 15-27, 2019 course at the Santa Paula campus, 70 miles north of Los Angeles. A full scholarship is available to youth entering going their senior High School year. This $975 scholarship covers tuition, housing, meals, books, and organized off campus activities. For two weeks, students from around the country and abroad will delight in spirited conversation, engaging some of the best works of the past 2,500 years, reading and discussing texts selected from the masters of the Western intellectual tradition. The program will be centered around the College s unique Great Books for Catholic education program. Classes use a Discussion Method, guided by members of the faculty. Class size is limited to 17 students in order to allow each student the opportunity to contribute. The location is ideal for recreation of all sorts. In addition to daily sports, occasional movies, and hiking, the program includes excursions to local attractions. Students will visit the Getty Museum, take in a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, and head to Santa Barbara for volleyball on the beach and an exploration of the historic city. Thomas Aquinas College is genuinely Catholic and has a rich sacramental life. During the Summer Program, Mass will be offered daily and a chaplain will be available on campus at all times. 5 Martin Luther King Jr. This past week we observed the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For those of us from an orthodox tradition, we are edified when we recall that the former Greek Orthodox Archbishop of North and South America, Archbishop Iakovos, was one of a very few prominent non-african American clergymen, and the only leader of a major faith group, to walk hand in hand with King during the March in Selma -- a watershed event in U.S. Civil Rights history. Iakovos, in an interview following the march, noted that he was branded "un-american," "a traitor." Iakovos noted that he supported King because he, himself, as a non-turk and non-muslim in the Ottoman Empire, had been a third-class citizen; he knew, personally, what it was like to be denied basic civil and human rights. Let us remember when we recall Iakovos' bold action: our faith impels us to action in the cause of nurturing human life. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King, Jr. Saint of the Day: القديس يوحنا الذهبي الفم St. John Chrysostom St. John Chrysostom (ca September 407), was Archbishop of Constantinople and was well known for his great preaching skills hence his name, Chrysostom or Golden Mouth -- and his denouncements of abuse of power and authority. He is also the author of our Diving Liturgy celebrated today. He was also well known for his self-imposed and harsh asceticism. Due to some struggles with the powers that be, John was exiled from Constantinople and soon after died. Later, in 438, his relics were transferred back to Constantinople his earthly remains returned to his earthly home. On this day Holy Mother Church sings of her illustrious son: Exult O Queen of all cities, as you receive today the relics of your good and chief shepherd, Chrysostom the mellifluous, whose guidance saved you and the whole world. Let our hands and mouths resound with music in his honor! And: The holy and august Church is mystically gladdened today on the translation of your holy relics. And though she had kept them concealed like precious gold, through your intercessions she unceasingly grants them praise thee, the divine grace of healing, O Father John Chrysostom.
