Next Sunday, February 24, 2019 A Monthly Speech: The Ladies League is organizing a monthly speech, every 4 th Sunday of the month, with a specialist; different topics will be discussed. The second topic will be: Rise Again: In her presentation, Haya, a Syrian immigrant who moved to the US 6 years ago, will talk about her experience in creating and running the non-profit Rise Again, which is an organization that raises money and provides prosthetic devices for people who have lost their limbs because of the war in Syria. Haya is a young adult girl; she started her project of Rise Again when she was only 14 years old. Haya is a role model to all the teenagers and young adults to do similar projects if we think thoroughly, love deeply and do our best we will be able to help the needy people. All our teenagers and young adults are invited to come and see and to think what we can do to serve Jesus Christ incarnate in the poor. There is a great desire among our cohort at St Anne s for a special time and place to gather and share social and spiritual experiences that are unique at this stage of life. Looking ahead, we are planning a community service and social activity for the near future we ll keep you abreast of developments. Also, a few SAYA members will be reading and praying this Lent with The Lenten Spring, an Orthodox spiritual classic (If you are in this age group and interested please see, , or call Fr Shaun.) SAYA is for young adults between the ages of 18 and 30. We realize folks in this age group are especially busy, what with working jobs that often have odd hours, shifting schedules, and school workloads that frequently defy the limits of space and time. Be that as it may, we promise not to tax your overly hectic life any more than it is already. In fact, let SAYA be a respite! Call, speak to, or Fr Shaun and we ll make sure you re included in our next event! Altar Servers: Servers are needed for the 9:00 a.m. liturgy. As you know, the Liturgies of St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil the Great are magnificent and complex. In order to help the liturgical action flow unimpeded, it is preferable that we have altar servers assist with processions, incense, etc. Please speak with Fr. A Scholarship: Thomas Aquinas College Summer High School Program Scholarship for their July 15-27, 2019 course at the Santa Paula campus, 70 miles north of Los Angeles. A full scholarship is available to youth entering going their senior High School year. This $975 scholarship covers tuition, housing, meals, books, and organized off campus activities. For two weeks, students from around the country and abroad will delight in spirited conversation

5 engaging some of the best works of the past 2,500 years, reading and discussing texts selected from the masters of the Western intellectual tradition. The program will be centered around the College s unique Great Books for Catholic education program. Classes use a Discussion Method, guided by members of the faculty. Class size is limited to 17 students in order to allow each student the opportunity to contribute. The location is ideal for recreation of all sorts. In addition to daily sports, occasional movies, and hiking, the program includes excursions to local attractions. Students will visit the Getty Museum, take in a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, and head to Santa Barbara for volleyball on the beach and an exploration of the historic city. Thomas Aquinas College is genuinely Catholic and has a rich sacramental life. During the Summer Program, Mass will be offered daily and a chaplain will be available on campus at all times. The Triodion Time The ten weeks before Pascha are called Triodion, or Period of the Three Odes because during that time no more than three odes are sung at the Canon of Matins. It includes the Time Before Lent, or Prophonisimon, the Forty Days of Lent, and the Holy Great Week. The Time Before Lent: The two weeks before Lent are called Prophonisimon, or Herald of Lent. They prepare for the proper mood of penance and self-denial. They include the Week of the Pharisee & Publican and the Week of the Prodigal Son. Sunday of the Pharisee & Publican: The lesson of this week teaches us to avoid the pride of the Pharisee and imitate the humility of the Publican. The Fasting Discipline Fasting: Is refraining from any food and drink from midnight until Vespers (prayers at sunset). So, the person fasting eats only a single meal a day after Vespers or after the Liturgy of the Presanctified. Days of Fasting during Great Lent: Monday through Friday throughout Lent and Holy Week. No fasting on Saturdays and Sundays because Saturday is the Sabbath and Sunday is the Day of the Resurrection. Great and Holy Saturday is the only Saturday of the year on which one must keep a fast until we celebrate Great Vespers and Liturgy of St. Basil. Abstinence: Refrain from consuming all meat (including fish), dairy products, eggs, wine. Days of Abstinence: The whole of Great Lent, including Saturdays, Sundays and all of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday الشعانين) (أحد and the Feast of the Annunciation البشارة) :(عيد fish and wine are permitted. Fasting and abstinence exceptions: If you are sick, elderly, pregnant, or too young for the traditional fast, an exception can be made. However, in the spirit of the Fast, still join us as a form of fellowship. For those who fit in these categories, we encourage you to practice fasting and abstinence at least on the first day of the Great Fast (Mach 4, 2019), Wednesdays and Fridays of the Great Fast, and Holy Week (April 15 to 19, 2019).
