Collect Almighty God, who called your Church to bear witness that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself: help us to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may be drawn to you; through him who was lifted up on the cross, and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. A reading from the Book of the Prophet Joshua Joshua a, Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors - Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor - lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Then the people answered, Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 34(v15-22) 15 The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous: and his ears are open unto their prayers. 16 The countenance of the Lord is against I them that do evil: to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth them: and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are broken in heart: and will save such as be bruised in spirit. 19 Great are the troubles of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of all. 20 He keepeth all his I bones: so that not one of them is broken. 21 But misfortune shall slay the ungodly: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. 22 The Lord delivereth the souls of his servants: and all they that put their trust in him shall not be desolate.

A reading from Saint Paul s Letter to the Ephesians Ephesians Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Listen to the Gospel of Christ according to Saint John. John Glory to you, O Lord. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever. He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, This teaching is difficult; who can accept it? But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father. Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, Do you also wish to go away? Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMNS AT THE 11AM CHORAL EUCHARIST THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and corner-stone, chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one, holy Zion's help for ever, and her confidence alone. To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, today; with thy wonted loving-kindness hear thy servants as they pray; and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway. Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain, what they gain from thee for ever with the blessèd to retain, and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign. Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever Three, and ever One, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run. Amen. Words: Anonymous Latin translated by John M Neale ( ) Music: WESTMINSTER ABBEY Henry Purcell ( )

OFFERTORY HYMN How shall I sing that Majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I? Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears; but they behold thy face: they sing because thou art their sun: Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun, there alleluias be. Enlighten with faith's light my heart, inflame it with love's fire; then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. How great a being Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep: thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere. Words: John Mason (c ) Music: COE FEN Kenneth Nicholson Naylor ( )

POST COMMUNION HYMN Soul of my Saviour, sanctify my breast, Body of Christ, be thou my saving guest, Blood of my Saviour, bathe me in thy tide, wash me with water flowing from thy side. Strength and protection may thy passion be, O blessèd Jesu, hear and answer me; deep in thy wounds, Lord, hide and shelter me, so shall I never, never part from thee. Guard and defend me from the foe malign, in death's dread moments make me only thine: call me and bid me come to thee on high where I may praise thee with thy saints for ay. Words: Anima Christi sanctifica me, attributed to Pope John XXII ( ) Anonymous English translation Music: ANIMA CHRISTI William Maher ( )

NOTICES Cathedral Administration - As many of you know, the post of Cathedral Secretary has been filled over the last couple of years by temporary staff in order to maintain some flexibility. The Cathedral expects shortly to move to a more permanent arrangement but in the meantime, the Parish Warden, Charlotte Davey, will be joining the office team voluntarily, to provide additional cover. I am very grateful to her for this support. The Dean. Llandaff Parish Mothers'Union - There are two meetings in September. We start back after our break over the Summer Holidays, on Monday 3rd September. Our speaker will be David James who will tell us about his 'Travels Around The Empire.' On Monday 17 th September, our speaker will be David Trotman who will speak to us about 'Woody's Lodge.' We look forward to seeing everyone and any new members or visitors who wish to join us, will be made most welcome. We meet in The Parish Hall on the first and third Mondays in the month, meetings starts at pm. Enid Evans. Organ Spectacular - On Saturday 15 th September at 7pm our Cathedral Organists David Thomas and Stephen Moore will be giving a concert entitled Organ Spectacular. This event is intended to raise funds for the Cathedral Choir s forthcoming tour to Sweden in July The concert will be made up of favourite pieces for the organ, including works by Bach, Vaughan Williams, Walton and Widor, amongst many others. Also, in an exciting twist, there are four slots for members of the audience to request pieces to be played. This must be done in writing to stephenmoore@llandaffcathedral.org.uk by Saturday 1 September at the latest. The final selection of what will be played will then be posted on the Cathedral website. Whether or not you would like to request a piece we hope you will come and invite others to do so. Admission will be FREE with a retiring collection. FRIENDS PILGRIMAGE Tuesday 2 nd October. Historic Churches of the Gower & Choral Evensong in Swansea - Leaving the Cathedral Green at 9.15am, we travel to St Mary's Pennard, a late 13th century church with early medieval features and a Jacobean pulpit. Then to St Nicholas Church, Nicholston, described as 'a Victorian jewel box' and known locally as the 'Cathedral of Gower.' There will then be time for your own choice of lunch at the Mumbles before visiting St Teilo's Church, Bishopston, one of the earliest Christian sites in Wales with a history going back to the 5th century. According to the Book of Llandaff, apparently, a church was established here by St Teilo himself. Our final church will be St Mary's, Swansea, the civic church of Swansea, where we will have a cup of tea and a tour before choral Evensong. Tickets at 30 each - same price as are now available from Linda Quinn, 74 Pencisely Rd Cardiff CF5 1DH(SAE please) Cheques payable to The Friends of Llandaff Cathedral. A change in the time of Cathedral Weekday Services on Fridays - The Celebration of The Holy Eucharist on Fridays will from now on be held at rather than 9.30 with effect from the 7th September.
