Collect Almighty God, who sent your Holy Spirit to be the life and light of your Church: open our hearts to the riches of your grace, that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit in love and joy and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A reading from the Second Book of Kings 2 Kings A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing food from the first fruits to the man of God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, Give it to the people and let them eat. But his servant said, How can I set this before a hundred people? So he repeated, Give it to the people and let them eat, for thus says the Lord, They shall eat and have some left. He set it before them, they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the Lord. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 145(vv10-18) 10 All thy works praise thee O Lord: and thy servants bless thy name. 11They speak of the glory of thy kingdom: and their talking is of thy power. 12 That thy power may be known unto men: even the glorious brightness of thy kingdom. 13 Thy kingdom is an ever lasting kingdom: and thy dominion endureth throughout all ages. 14 The Lord upholdeth all such as fall: and lifteth up all those that are down. 15 The eyes of all wait upon thee O Lord: and thou givest them their food in due season. 16 Thou openest Thine hand: and filledst all things living with plenteousness. 17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways: and merciful in all his works. 18 The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him: yea all such as call upon him faithfully.
A reading from St Paul s Letter to the Ephesians Ephesians For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Listen to the Gospel of Christ according to Saint John. John Glory to you, O Lord. After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming towards him, Jesus said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat? He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, Six months wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, said to him, There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people? Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost. So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world. When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, got into a boat, and started across the lake to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The lake became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, It is I; do not be afraid. Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land towards which they were going. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
HYMNS AT THE 11AM CHORAL EUCHARIST THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee, though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see, only thou art holy, there is none beside thee perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. Words: Reginald Heber ( )
OFFERTORY HYMN All creatures of our God and King lift up your voice and with us sing Alleluia, alleluia. Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam, O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Thou rushing wind that art so strong, ye clouds that sail in heaven along, O praise him, alleluia. Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice, ye lights of evening, find a voice; Chorus Thou flowing water, pure and clear, make music for thy Lord to hear, Alleluia, alleluia. Thou fire so masterful and bright, that givest man both warmth and light: Chorus Dear mother earth, who day by day unfoldest blessings on our way, O praise him, alleluia. the flowers and fruits that in thee grow, let them his glory also show: Chorus Let all things their Creator bless, and worship him in humbleness; O praise him, alleluia. Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in One; Chorus Words: William Henry Draper ( ) based on Laudato sii, O me signore St Francis of Assisi's Canticle of the Sun Music: LASST UNS ERFREUEN Ralph Vaughan Williams ( )
POST COMMUNION HYMN The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word: from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy Bride; with his own blood he bought her and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses with every grace endued. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace for evermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest. Yet she on earth hath union with God the three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord give us grace that we, like them the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. Words: Samuel John Stone ( ) Music: AURELIA Samuel Sebastian Wesley ( )
