3 Dear parish family, 8 th Sunday Ordinary Time A March 1 is Ash Wednesday and the official beginning of Lent. We are reminded once again that we are dust to dust we return. Where are all our riches, glories and achievements go when we die? It depends where our values leads us towards our final end. But for us who have faith, God is our beginning and our end. When we use what we have for the glory of God, we actually are bringing with us what we all gave away, not to dust but one's eternal reward. Today s readings are most appropriate as we prepare for the penitential time of Lent. In this Sundays gospel, the Lord tells us, You cannot serve God and mammon. Many casually interpret "mammon" as money or wealth, but biblical scholars tell us that mammon has more deeper and wider meaning. We cannot cover all here but one theory is that it is based on the Hebrew word "aman," which meant to trust. Perhaps Jesus was speaking of trusting in wealth rather than in God. Whom do we trust? We must know and accept the fact that God is with us and that God loves us. Our trust needs to be in Him, not in earthly matters or earthly riches. It is often said that at the heart of stewardship is trust. As stewards of Christ and of the Church we accept the fact that everything comes from God, that everything is ultimately the Lord s, and we are merely stewards of those gifts, not owners, and we are called to serve God and others. There are many ways to look at what Christ is teaching us in this Sunday's gospel. As He often does, Jesus is talking about where our hearts are. Many people maintain that they love God and that they serve God, but do their actions, the way they live, reflect that? One indication may be were our priorities are. How many people spend more money for a lot of useless and even vain things, but what percent are being used for God's glory? The gospel passage about serving two masters and the parables of the birds and wild flowers challenge our scale of values: Do we exist to acquire the holiness of God or the riches of life? And it invites us to avoid unnecessary worries by putting our trust in the love and providence of a merciful God, and then living each day s life as it comes, doing His will and realizing His presence within us and others. Our Lord and Savior conclude by telling us Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. We tend to worry about a lot of things over which we have little control, but God does and he is in control, just trust Him. Blessings to all and have a good week. Fr. " A quién confiamos?" Padre

They can easily get caught up with what they re having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What s for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn t say, Don t eat. Don t cook. Don t buy clothes. He says, Don t worry. Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that Your heavenly Father knows all that you need (Matthew 6:32). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
