3 FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parish Family, Here is another Ask-A-Priest: Q: What if the priest doesn t want to consecrate wine at Mass; does he have to? A: Yes; it is not up to the priest to decide whether to use bread and wine, or just one at Mass; he must consecrate both. The fact that there are ALWAYS two separate consecrations at Mass (one of the bread and one of the wine) is an absolute necessity. If a priest were ever to intentionally and deliberately skip one of the consecrations, then that Mass would be automatically invalid and even what he attempted to consecrate would be invalid as well. Separate consecrations, of bread and of wine, at Mass is not a human invention, but comes to us from Jesus Christ because, at the Last Supper, He Himself said separate prayers over the bread and over the wine. The priest, acting in the Person of Christ, In Persona Christi, imitates our Savior s actions by always consecrating the bread and wine separately. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that the Eucharist is a sacrifice because it re-presents (makes present) the sacrifice of the cross (CCC #1366) and that in the Eucharist, Christ gives us the very body which he gave up for us on the cross, the very blood which he poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (CCC #1365). Thus, the bread and wine are separately consecrated because Christ s Body and Blood were separated on the cross at His death. God bless you, Fr. There are many opportunities to share your faith with those at Nativity. Here are a few: 1. Work with children ages 3 and up. 2. Facilitate adults. 3. Join a study group. 4. Attend a presentation. 5. Pray for those who do the above. If you are called in any way to help our youngest through our oldest members with something as simple as paperwork through facilitating a group, please contact the parish office to talk further. Together, lets Go therefore and make disciples of all nations... (Jesus, Matthew 28:19) TIDBITS FROM THE CHURCH MOUSE Hi Folks, I heard something remarkable last week. Would you believe that Romain and Rosemary have been friends ever since they can remember? They grew up in different neighborhoods, and went to different schools, but both of their families went to St. Paul s church. Their mothers were good friends, so they also got to play together whenever their moms were visiting. Years passed, and many people lose touch with their childhood playmates, but their friendship grew stronger. In fact, when Romain and Chuck got married, Rosemary was their maid of honor! Life continued on, and nothing would shake their lasting bond of friendship. Now, they are part of the Nativity Church family where they share the same Holy hour time slot, and attend many fellowship events, as well as Mass of course. Romain said that their friendship reminds her of a poem she likes called The Train of Life. It begins with a person s birth boarding the train where they travel through life with parents, siblings, friends, and even the love of your life coming on board. Along the way, people step down off of the train, leaving their vacant seat and beautiful memories. The poem advises to live life the best we can be since we never know when it will be our turn to step down. But as long as they are on that train together, Rosemary and Romain will certainly enjoy the ride! So long for now from Chatter, your friendly church mouse. If you are writing a check, PLEASE fill in the number amount and the written amount, make it out to Nativity of the Lord Jesus, and don t forget to sign it. Thank you for your attention to detail. MASS OFFERINGS AND INTENTIONS REMINDER: The 2018 and 2019 Mass Book for our parish is open for your Offerings and Intentions. Every scheduled parish Mass during the week and on weekends can be offered for the intentions of individuals. The Christian faithful who give an offering to apply the Mass for their intention contribute to the good of the Church and by that offering share its concern to support its ministers and works (Code of Canon Law #946). You may offer a Mass for any human person who is living or deceased. If the person is living, the phrase for the intentions of will accompany the name; otherwise, the name will be said within the petition for those who have died. The customary offering of $10 is to be applied only once per Mass. Please consider scheduling a Mass intention for your family member(s) who have passed away or for someone who is sick, by calling or visiting the parish office during hours to schedule the offering and intention. 4 school supplies for students in need in the Springfield Local Schools district. This is in addition to enabling us to help many families throughout the year with food, rent, utility and other expenses. You are beautiful reflections of God's love. August 19 - Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time: In Today s Gospel Jesus tells us that Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in Him. As we know, our loving God cannot be seen by our eyes, but only experienced through loving people. With love for your neighbors who have nothing, look around your house to see what household items and clothing you no longer use...and give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. A NEW CHOIR SEASON A new choir season is upon us, and as we begin this new season we extend an invitation to all parishioners to consider joining the traditional choir. The choir is open to all levels of experience and all voices are welcomed and encouraged to sing. What better way to praise God than through the gift of music. FRANCIS de SALES PARISH 70 th Anniversary 5K Run/Walk In celebration of St. Francis de Sales 70 th Jubilee, the Anniversary Committee and our Parish Council would like you to join us in a 5K run/walk.
