2 BASILICA OF THE ASSUMPTION By Jeff Allan Prologue THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 22ND, 2016 Saint Thomas Aquinas concluded [from the original Latin]: Quod impossibile est per rationem naturalem ad cognitionem Trinitatis divinarum Personarum pervenire - It is impossible by natural reason to attain to the knowledge of the Divine Persons of the Trinity (Summa Theologicæ). Interesting, though, is that Saint Thomas believed that the existence of God can be reasoned. Arguably the greatest theologian the Church has ever had, Saint Thomas Aquinas had a most peculiar but incredibly fair way of presenting his arguments: He would state his case, answer all oppositional objections and even produce objections no one ever thought of and answer those as well. As far as the Trinity being three Persons Saint Thomas said that this doesn t mean three separate individuals in the subject of God. In other words, the Trinity is not as sometimes portrayed in artwork with the Father as the older, white-haired Man with the patriarchal beard, while the Son is the younger, brown-haired Man, and the Holy Spirit is the Dove. Saint Thomas thinks of the Trinity as relationships within one God. These relationships within God depict His knowledge of Himself and His Love. This means that the Paternity of God is God. God s superior knowledge of Himself is the Filialness or Son of God and the relationship of Love between God and His Self-knowledge is the Holy Spirit. The Angelic Doctor explains it this way: Quicumque enim intelligit, ex hoc ipso quod intelligit, procedit aliquid intra ipsum, quod est conceptio rei intellectæ, ex vi intellectiva proveniens, et ex eius notitia procedens. Quam quidem conceptionem vox significat; et dicitur verbum cordis significatum verbo vocis Whenever we understand, by the very fact of understanding, there proceeds something within us, which is a conception of the object understood, issuing from our intellectual power, and proceeding from our knowledge. This conception is signified by the spoken word; and it is called the word of the heart signified by the word of the voice (ibid.). Granted, that explanation from the gifted mind of Saint Thomas Aquinas is not an easy read but the truth is that no one possesses the intellectual capacity to fully comprehend and thus define the Most Holy Trinity. The Trinity is a great, sacred mystery. Gospel, John 16:12-15 Jesus still has many things to teach His Church; more than could possibly be taught in the little time He had left with His apostles. For this reason, Jesus promises the Spirit of Truth Who continues to this very day to guide the Church to all truth. With all the worries and concerns we have in this life, determining whether or not the Church teaches the Truth should never be one of those concerns. It must be so because Christ declares it; and if it weren t so, the great Paraclete would have to relinquish His title as the Spirit of Truth. During his interrogation of Jesus, Pontius Pilate asked our Lord: What is truth? Truth not only comes from our Lord but Truth is our Lord. Today s highly secularized culture would have us believe otherwise. We can hold fast to the Truth through frequent meditation on Scripture, especially the Gospels, regular visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and listening to the truth as the Holy Spirit reveals it to the Church, mainly through the reading of papal encyclicals and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. As the Son glorifies the Father, so the Holy Spirit glorifies the Son by revealing and teaching the commonality of the Father and the Son. Jesus also reveals to us in this Gospel that the Son has the identical Nature of the Father and they are both One and the same God. And by saying the words: I told you that He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you teaches us also that the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity proceeds from both the Father and the Son and that the Holy Spirit likewise possesses all of God s perfections because He is equally along with the Father and the Son, One and the same God. Poor Box contributions this weekend will be donated to support the ministry of The Little Sisters of the Poor and St. Martins Home in Catonsville. The Sisters offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as family. Thank you for your support! Please remember the poor and aged in our community by making a donation of non-perishable food items in the basket at the back of the church. Your donations are then packed and delivered by the Baltimore Basilica K of C Council to the Assisi House in Fells Point. Thanks You!
3 MAY 22ND, 2016 Basilica Council K of C News The Baltimore Basilica Council announces the beginning of the 5th Sunday Rosary Project at the Basilica of the Assumption, Beginning next Sunday, May 29th. All parishioners and visitors are cordially invited to join the Knights in saying the rosary after the 8am, 10:45, and 4:30 mass. The Rosary Project will continue on each of the four 5th Sunday's during this year. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Knights of Columbus, and helping to serve not only the Basilica family but the community, please contact GK Jim Goldbeck: goldiejim@yahoo.com. The 2016 Archbishop s Annual Appeal is well underway at Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our parish appeal goal for 2016 is $32,800. So far, 146 parishioners have participated with either a pledge or gift and together, we have raised $66,621! Thank you to all who participated up to this point. Funds that are raised from the 2016 Appeal will support the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the following ways: Msgr. Arthur F. Valenzano Music Ministry Fund: recently established in the Catholic Community Foundation to provide perpetual funding for the enrichment of music to the Basilica. Adult Faith Formation: provide funds for the continued growth of the Adult Faith Formation program. Heating system: support necessary enhancements and upgrades to the mechanical system. As a reminder the parish receives 25% back of pledges up to goal and 50% rebate from pledges over goal. It s not the size of the gift that s important, but your willingness to participate which in turn, makes it easier for our parish to meet its needs, like those mentioned above. If you have yet to participate in the 2016 Archbishop s Annual Appeal, please pledge online at or complete a pledge form available in the back of the Church. Please note that you may make a pledge payable in monthly installments up until January 31, The Casserole Project will continue this month and all are invited to help prepare casseroles for the homeless at My Sister s Place.
