Letter from the Vicar for Peel Fair s fair As we encounter the new risen life of Jesus this Easter and Spring finally begins to burst out all over (would it be too much to hope for a bit of warm sun?) we should be both spiritually re-charged and ready to take on the inevitable new challenges of Some of those may be physical, some may be unexpected, while some will require a good deal of thought (and, no, I m not talking about the EU referendum or the forthcoming General Election!). If we have been reflecting on fairness and compassion and equal opportunities over the Easter period, then perhaps now is the time to spare a thought for Manx farmers. At the Cathedral we are happy to support the principles and practices of Fair Trade (particularly through Lynne s regular mouth-watering stall) and we probably all put Fair Trade products in our supermarket trolleys. Perhaps we should think about applying the same principles locally. Is it right to buy Imported milk or butter simply because it s cheaper; to buy bread baked in an anonymous factory somewhere in the north of England to save a few extra pence; or to buy vegetables grown in continental Europe or even further afield when we can find the same thing grown locally? This is not to say that everything Manx is necessarily better but there is a danger, when we think about disadvantaged growers and farmers elsewhere, that we forget there are problems here, too. Not simply the problem of small farmers finding it difficult to make a decent living, but the possibility of land no longer being used for food production and being turned over to development. The Manx NFU claims that if everyone in Britain bought local food our carbon emissions would reduce by 10%! With Fair Trade products, we don t exhaustively compare prices because we know that a small premium is going to the third world producer. Manx farmers are not competing for chocolate, coffee or tea but they are, unfortunately, competing for space on local supermarket shelves. The current Fair Trade campaign puts it quite bluntly: The power is in your hands you have the power to change the world every day. If we really subscribe to this idea, it s time to be fair to our own farmers. Rev Ian Faulds Vicar for Peel

Sweet Singing in the Choir In the last edition I mentioned the Friends of Cathedral Music National Thanksgiving service that will be taking place in St Paul s Cathedral London on April 27th. Each Cathedral has been asked to send a representative Chorister- of 19 Choristers, our choice to represent Cathedral Isle of Man is Mackenzie Brown. Mackenzie Brown (aged 12 years old) joined the choir in the first batch of Probationer- Choristers when I re-founded the choir in Since then, a strong personality, he has developed significantly both in relationship to the other choristers (they respect him) and in his individual voice studies. He was awarded the Kirkpatrick Choristership which entitles him to a weekly voice lesson, and recently we heard how he passed ABRSM Grade 2 singing with a Merit. The service will include demanding choral music in which the representative Cathedral Choristers will join with the professional St Paul s Cathedral Choir. The music consists of all the biggies -Parry s I was Glad, Handel s Zadok and Allegri s Miserere as well as newly commissioned music. We felt that Mackenzie would cope easily with the demanding music, but also represent us well as an enthusiastic ambassador of our Cathedral. We all wish him well for his time in London, and I know that Mackenzie will write about his experience after the great event! April 17th 3.30pm Choral Evensong sees the launch of the Friends of St German s Cathedral Music and Arts Foundation. This group has been developed to support music making and the choir at St German s Cathedral, and to ensure that the choir continues to develop into the long term future. To become a Friend we ask for a contribution of 100 one off payment for the year (or 10 a month for a year). Music Foundation Friends in turn are entitled to preferential seating at all Cathedral Choir concerts and large services (like the Carol service) and an annual Evensong with afternoon tea where they can meet and socialise with choristers and music staff. If you would like to become a Friend, do speak to me or Revd Ian Faulds after a service. Editor: Christiane Litman ciom.news@gmail.com Dr Peter Litman The editor is happy to publish articles and photographs from contributors but they do not necessarily represent the views of the editor or the Cathedral. Please inform the editor directly if you have any dates to be included in the diary. Please submit articles and images for consideration by the 25 th of each month.

Fundraising for the new heating system We are pleased to say that we should now have enough money to proceed with the first phase of heating the Cathedral ie installation of gas boiler to work with existing pipes, however, we have to remember that these pipes are old and will not work at 100% and this is an interim measure. We are very grateful to all who have helped to make this phase a possibility either by making an individual donation or as part of a team, such as Lynne s team who provided and served the Lent Lunches and donated the proceeds of 445 to the heating appeal. We must now turn our attention to raising the funds for the next 3 phases which involves flattening the floor and installing under floor heating throughout the Cathedral. Working together we can make this a reality. The overall strategy we have is to: Use the reserves we have at the Cathedral as a guarantee against loans, so that they can be repaid quickly on demand if required. Ask our congregation to help with the project through giving directly either by a lump sum or regular committed giving over a period of years and/or making an interest free loan. Ask the friends we know and relatives to help us. Ask the diocese to assist in any way they can Ask the people of the Island to assist In parallel with this we shall ask Trusts who might be willing to support us, but may require matched funding. Your donations can act as the matched funding. Some may find it difficult or impossible to respond to a direct ask, but we wonder if you would be willing to organize an event (it doesn t have to be huge) that you can invite your friends to? If you feel that you can t do this but have an idea for a fundraising event please let Val know and she may be able to help you put it into action. Perhaps there are those doing the parish walk? Things that have been offered so far to help raise funds: Easter Offering Car Boot Sale Easter Monday 28 March Walking Treasure Hunt and BBQ date to be arranged Parish Walk Refreshments - Saturday 18 June Cathedral Choir Concert Saturday 25 June Secret Gardens Refreshments (Deanery) Saturday 16 July and Sunday 17 July Materials required at cost What have we raised to date? We would like to thank our 16 donors to date. Banked (10 donors, a combination of gifts and loans) 84,000 Standing Orders (1 set up over 4 years) 5,000 Pledges (5) 14,000 Overall Total: 103,000 Val Garrett

The Cycle of Youth work Like most things youth work goes in cycles, academic years, calendar years, friendship groups, leader availability etc. As life changes and as young people group up, priorities change, exam pressure increases, part-time jobs start, and they often move away. Over the last few years we have seen all of these things happen with the voice youth group, resulting in it needing to stop for the time being, at least until exams are over. Most youth groups last while a friendship group travel through secondary school and then need to stop and restart with a new group, which is what we are planning on doing. It is hoped in the next couple of months a new youth group will be starting, day and time to be decided (depending on attendees), so if young people are interested please let me know as well as what times work for you. In addition I m sad to have to tell you that after a great three years, Living Hope are no longer able to help with the Revolution youth group that meets on a Friday, due to other commitments at their church. This group is currently going from strength to strength with about eight new young people starting to attend over the last couple of weeks, and the alpha group that meets for the first hour regularly gets between four and ten young people who spend the time thinking and talking about God and how faith in Him impacts our lives. Due to this change in Living Hope s availability I am looking for people who could commit to one Friday evening a month (or even more regularly!) to help us plug the gap. This is our main contact with young people who would never cross the threshold of our church, as we build up relationships with them and meet them where they are at. If you are interested in helping in any capacity, please speak to me. Photos taken on Palm Sunday Ruth Walker Children, Youth and Family Worker

Have you Twinned your Toilet? Eighteen months ago the World Development Committee of Churches Alive in Man decided with the One World Centre to flag up the problem of lack of sanitation facilities around the world for One World Week in October There are still 2.4 billion people without a toilet which brings both health and safety issues. Women can be attacked and raped as they seek somewhere a bit private on the edges of their communities under the cover of darkness. Toilet Twinning, a small UK organisation, has an amazing scheme where for 60 you get a framed picture of a pit latrine in the developing world, complete with its GPS co-ordinates so that you can locate it on Google Earth. Clearly that toilet already exists so the 60 goes to help communities build their own new latrine which, in turn, could be twinned. Since the beginning of the initiative more than 130 toilets on the Isle of Man have been twinned, including churches, schools and offices as well as individuals some of whom are politicians. As a result we have been awarded Toilet Twinned Island Status and Lorraine Kingsley, the Director of Toilet Twinning, came to the Island last week. On Friday 18th March we toured as many of the Island's twinned toilets as possible, stopping at 27 different locations, and invited those who've twinned their toilets to tea in Douglas. To draw attention to this, we mounted a toilet on top of a car which was also decorated with bunting, toilet brushes and posters - as you can see in the picture you've been sent. It will be interesting to see whether the publicity about the tour (an alternative Manx TT - Toilet Twinning!), will result in more toilets being twinned. Rosemary Clarke

A Great Wave of Prayer The Archbishops of Canterbury and York are inviting churches to pray for the evangelisation of the nation during the week before Pentecost Sunday. The Archbishops have written to every serving parish priest in the Church of England expressing their longing to see a great wave of prayer across our land, throughout the Church of England and many other Churches from 8 th -15 th May. The week of prayer will culminate in Beacon events around the country over Pentecost weekend, where people will pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit and the confidence to share their faith. In their letter the Archbishops said: At the heart of our prayers will be words that Jesus himself taught us Thy kingdom come, thy will be done. It is impossible to overstate the life-transforming power of the Lord s Prayer. It is a prayer that is reassuring enough to be on the lips of the dying and yet dangerous enough to be banned in cinemas. It is famous enough to be spoken each day by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ. It is simple enough to be memorised by small children and yet profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer. When we pray it with sincerity and with joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to his glory. The Archbishops are suggesting various ways churches can engage with the week of prayer. These include holding a day or week of continuous 24/7 prayer as parishes, teams or deaneries; saying special prayers in Sunday worship; prayer walking; or handing out a novena prayer card to every congregation member. Partners in the week of prayer initiative include 24-7 Prayer, HOPE, the World Prayer Centre, the Neighbourhood Prayer, Network, and the National Day of Prayer and Worship. For more information, visit The week of Prayer in our Western Mission Partnership Area will be from Sunday 8th May to Saturday 14th May: Prayer will aim to be round the clock. 8th May Dalby Midnight-Midday St Luke s Midday-Midnight 9th May St John s 10th May Kirk Michael 11th May Cathedral 12th May Patrick 13th May Foxdale 14th May Marown Ruth K Walker is coordinating the time at the Cathedral (11th May) and would love you to be a part of it.
