No. 416 July/ August 2014 CATHEDRAL NEWS COMMUNITY, WORSHIP, CULTURE Suggested Donation 1 On 29th June, four Readers were licensed and Revd Margaret Burrow was installed as Canon of St Columba.

Licensing of Readers and a new Canon of St Columba 29th June saw the Installation of Revd Margaret Burrow as Canon Columba and the Licensing of 4 Readers in the Cathedral (see cover picture). Amongst the Readers was our own Rosemary Clarke. The Cathedral Choir were on good form with Stanford s Magnificat in C and the anthem How beautiful upon the Mountains by John Stainer. The Sermon was preached by Canon Mr Colin Finney, Warden of the Readers. It was great to see the Cathedral full and thanks should go to the Music department and to the Hospitality and Wardens for the high levels of expertise and organisation. It is good to hear the congregation and clergy comment... it s what we expect...obviously we are delivering the goods! Farewell to the McGowans The morning service of 29th June also saw a fond farewell to Revd James (Cathedral Curate), Caroline and George McGowan. The McGowans make their move to Ballasalla, where James will serve as Vicar of Malew and Santon. Our love and prayers go with them for the move and for their future ministry, though we are certain we shall be seeing and hearing from the family again. Farewell to Tim An Appreciation by Dr Litman Well, what can one say about our much loved Verger I have been fortunate these last 18 months to work closely with Tim. He has been a real stalwart and worker of the Cathedral, equally happy up ladders, on the roof, cleaning the floors, moving altars, waving his verge around or asleep in his stall after too much lunch at Evensong (-he has become the stuff of legend to the Choristers). We are all used to seeing him around, boiler suit, braces or in his gowns, and he will be greatly missed. Choral Evensong has been his real forte; he commands Bishops, Deans, Clergy, Congregation and Musicians with great ease and all with a wry smile. His fondness of tinkering with any kind of machine is well known and respected in Peel. So, we wish him well for the future, I for one (as will many) will miss him and the tasks he just gets on with as a matter of form. One little anecdote before he leaves...one day Tim was cleaning the roof of the porch when his ladder fell, phoneless (and helpless) he sat on top of the porch roof for hours until a German tourist came in and then he had to use a mixture of shouted slow English and sign language to retrieve his ladder for a dignified descent...all we can say is, shaking our head...that Verger! Dr Peter Litman

Chorister Achievements Cathedral Chorister Jessie Quigley has been awarded her red ribbon making her a senior chorister at just eight years old! Choristers are ranked as follows; probationers wear just a purple cassock, full choristers wear a white surplice over their cassock, junior choristers wear a light blue ribbon, middle choristers wear a dark blue ribbon, senior choristers the red ribbon and lead choristers wear special blue, red and gold ribbon. Dr Peter Litman said: It s a remarkable achievement. At the age of three Jessie joined Gale Force, the theatrical school for youngsters, and started her journey into singing proper music. School founder Barbara Gale encouraged her from being a timid three-year-old who didn t like people looking at her, to an eight-year-old who will happily stand up on the Villa Marina stage and sing a solo. Jessie has won her class in the Manx Music Festival for the last two years and has performed consecutive years in the Sheffield Plate. In 2012 she joined the Cathedral Choristers. Dr Litman said: With the Choristers she is not restricted by her age, she doesn t have to be a certain age to be able to do the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Voice for Life ribbon tests, it is all about her ability and love of singing. You always know where Jessie is as you will hear her practising. Singing is as natural as breathing for Jessie. Head Chorister Peter Boussougou starred as the lead in Queen Elizabeth II High School s production of POPTASTIC- the search for fame. Quite remarkable as he is only a Year 7 student! Peter s natural musicianship and stage presence was obvious to all who saw the show. Dr Litman and Children and Families Worker, Ruth Walker, attended the performances. Both were surprised at Peter s quality of vocal technique and stage presence; equally it was great to see so many Revolution kids in the cast too...so many talented youngsters! Dr Peter Litman Editor: Christiane Litman ciom.news@gmail.com The editor is happy to publish articles and photographs from contributors but they do not necessarily represent the views of the Editor or the Cathedral. Please inform the editor directly, if you have any dates to be included in the Diary. Please submit articles and images for consideration by the 25 th of each month.

A Background on Baptisms Each year at the Cathedral we welcome numerous children and their families for baptism. So far this year, there have been 9 baptisms and one thanksgiving, with at least another 8 set to happen before the end of the year. The process of organising a baptism or a thanksgiving has changed over the years and continues to be a fluid process, however, the normal process goes something like this: In January, the Liturgy group decide the baptism Sundays for the next 12 months, normally with a pattern of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 3rd, however the 2nd and 4th services are often interchangeable for special Sundays. Someone phones up to book a baptism and I (Ruth) work with them to choose a date that both fits our selected Sundays and what works for them as a family; this is often complicated by family needing to travel to the island for the baptism. Also, we try to have a maximum of two families per Sunday, in order to be able to welcome the family fully as well as fitting everyone in! In the month prior to the baptism, the member of the clergy who will be baptising as well as one of the members of the baptism visitation team go to the family s house and fill out the necessary paper work and talk through the service, ensuring they know what they are participating in. A few days beforehand, the gifts that are given are collected and registers written. Each child gets a wooden cross, a Bible and a prayer book (all provided by the Mother s Union) as well as a candle, certificate for the child and certificates for each of the Godparents. As you can imagine, this can change for different families and situations. Often baptisms are booked in months in advance, however, occasionally we have to get one sorted very quickly (for example when a family member is home on leave from the forces) and on these occasions they often end up outside of our normal service pattern. We are fortunate that many families in Peel see the Cathedral as a part of their lives and so, when important things happen, such as the birth of a child, they choose to come and celebrate with us. Therefore I want to thank you on behalf of the baptism team for the welcome you continue to show these families when they worship with us. Ruth Walker Children and Families Worker

This took the form of a concert given by The Travelling People, a 3-piece folk band who pride themselves on their acoustic music. The venue was suitably altered to utilise the space with tables and chairs. Raffle prizes were donated by local businesses. Bottles and candles this created an informal setting for a wonderful night of music and entertainment. Approximately seventy people came along and many, who had not attended the Cathedral before, were pleasantly surprised by the venue facilities. After a rousing evening, 300 were donated to the Cathedral Quarter Trust. The venture was organised in partnership with Revd Robert Boyle, St Matthew s, Douglas. Ravina Talbot
