1 Feb. March As twenty-first century Christians, we already know the end of the story of this holy season. We know that death is overcome by life, that resurrection triumphs over the grave, that Christ is risen risen indeed! And so we celebrate each and every Sunday as a little Easter, a day on which we gather together to sing hymns and read scripture and rejoice together in the hope of our faith. Even in the season of Lent, a time set apart for contemplating the starker side of life, each Sunday is an opportunity to remember the end of the story: life and love win out in the end. This truth is what makes it possible for us to enter into Lent with both deep honesty and great hope, for we have already seen that nothing can ever come between us and the love of God. PASTOR S DESK Lenten Easter People To the beloved of God at Immanuel, This year Valentine s Day brings with it the beginning of Lent, the forty-day season of the church s liturgical year that leads up to the great festival day of Easter. Those of you keeping score at home will recognize that there are actually more than forty days between Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, and Easter Sunday, its culmination. From February 14 to April 1, there are forty-seven days, to be exact. This mathematical peculiarity points to one of my favorite things about the season of Lent: Sundays don t count. And so, I encourage you this year to observe a holy Lent. Take on a new spiritual discipline or give up something in your life so that you can focus more on God s work in the world. But do it always remembering that though we are in Lent, we are not of Lent, for we are Easter people. Thanks be to God! Now, the fact that Sundays don t count in Lent is often celebrated as a reprieve from our selfimposed fasting. There s one day each week to indulge in whatever tasty treat we ve given up for the season. On Sundays, eat chocolate or drink coffee! Take a break from whatever discipline you ve adopted for this holy season. Sundays don t count! Grace and peace, Pastor Sierra But the fact that Sundays don t count also points to a deeper truth about who we are as children of God, both during Lent and throughout the year. You see, we measure Sundays in Lent, not Sundays of Lent. While this might seem like a small grammatical detail in how we talk about these days, it also reminds us of the truth that we are people who are in Lent but not of Lent. 1
2 Lent February 14 th through April 1 st Shrove Tuesday February 13 th 5:30 PM Ash Wednesday February 14 th 7:00 PM LENT & HOLY WEEK Immanuel Lutheran Church Wilderness. Waiting. Reflection. Repentance. Lent is all these things and more: the 40 days (plus Sundays) when Christians around the world take time to reflect on the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. It is a time to examine our own walk as we follow Jesus perhaps there are things cluttering our lives during this time that we give up, or holy habits and practices we wish to add. Lent is a chance to reexamine our lives and refocus on our Lord who desperately wants to lead us into life. Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, is the day before Ash Wednesday. It is a day of celebration before the penitential season of Lent begins. Long ago, a pancake-eating tradition emerged as a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the 40-day fasting season. Come celebrate this day with us and eat your fill of pancakes! Do you like peanut butter on your pancakes? Strawberries? Chocolate sauce? Whip cream? Ice cream? Bring your favorite toppings to share! Pancake Supper and Game Night. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten journey. Join us for a quiet time of worship in song and prayer, scripture and silence, confession, ashes and communion. On this day, we mark a cross in ashes on foreheads as we remember our human frailty and turn to God in repentance. Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Soup Supper 6:00 PM & Service 7:30 PM Palm Sunday March 25 th 9:00 AM Join us every Wednesday (February 21, 28, March 7, 14, 21) throughout our Lenten journey. Soup Supper begins at 6:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall and is followed by a short worship service in the Sanctuary at 7:30 PM. Worship will use the Holden Evening Prayer liturgy and reflect on key characters from the passion narrative. The Palm Sunday Liturgy recreates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem as we wave our palms and make our procession into the church. This joyful mood soon changes to sober contemplation of our Lord's Passion at the Gospel. Thus, Holy Week begins. Maundy Thursday March 29 th 6:00 PM Good Friday March 30 th 7:00 PM Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. As we celebrate the Lord s Supper in Worship, we will also share a Potluck Dinner together. We will celebrate the Lord s Supper in two parts. In the first part, we will share the bread, the body of Christ. Then we will share in a potluck supper together. Following the meal and fellowship, we will celebrate part two of the Lord s supper with the wine, the blood of Christ. The service will conclude with the stripping of the altar as we anticipate the crucifixion of Christ. *Bring a potluck item to share. Worship continues on Good Friday. We will observe Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, through word and song and silence, using a Tenebrae style service of the Seven Last Words of Christ. Easter Sunday April 1 st He is risen! He is risen indeed! The joyful celebration of the resurrection of our Lord commences the morning of Easter Sunday. 6:30 AM & 9:00 AM Easter Worship 7:45 AM Easter Breakfast 2

4 People of Immanuel We think Immanuel is a pretty great place. A place of faith - of worship, of prayer, of learning. A place of community - of friendship and family. A place where we share the stories of Jesus and the amazing love of God. And a place where we share our own stories and lives as we seek to love one another and serve God s beloved world. Each edition of The Beacon Newsletter will feature small glimpses into the lives of those who call Immanuel home. It is our hope that in reading these stories, we will grow in love for one another and for this community as we reflect on the place of Immanuel in our own lives. Les Stromberg I came to Immanuel when it was called the Swedish Lutheran Church of Brunswick. I came in my mother s womb in 1942 and was born April 20, I am proud and happy to call Immanuel my church home ever since. I continue to call Immanuel my church home because I was baptized here, confirmed here and married here.. With a history like that, you couldn t chase me out of here with a pick axe! My favorite memory is telling stories to the Confirmation class for several years. I would still be doing it except for my health. I miss you kids. The one person who had the biggest impact on me at Immanuel is Russ Bergren. He never said anything bad about anyone and taught me I could pray anywhere in the field doing field work, doing chores, or driving down the road. God is always with us and listening. The biggest change I have seen at Immanuel is Confirmation. We were taught to be prejudiced in the church basement against the people of the Catholic faith. Thank God that we don t do that anymore. I hope we can continue to learn from our Pastors about the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one thing I love about Immanuel is the willingness to help those in need. We come together when needed and help the people of Immanuel and the community. Tammi Johnsen Immanuel is full of such caring people, I've had lots of great memories! We were baptized there. My older kids got married there. My most precious memories were the pastors that helped us so much with my grand baby passing and of course pastor Lori was our rock when my mom and I both had cancer at the same time. She was the rock for us! She really touched our hearts when we lost my mom. I really don't think my dad could of ever have dealt with all that without her. I will always be thankful for everyone at our church for being there for us in good or bad situations! I truly love you all for everything you have done for us! And now I am so thankful for Pastor Sierra, Mel, and Heather for teaching our children at confirmation. I m so proud that Tommy is so enthused about church. Thank you all! 4 Favorite Immanuel Memories One year, when one of the Pathways groups came to our church, I made a really good friend and we hung out and talked. We played some games and had lots of fun. -McKayla Nelson What I Love About Immanuel That it s a small church. -Tommy Johnsen Pastor. -Mark Arnold Someone Important to Me Les Stromberg. Because when my sister was sick, he would bring us dilly bars and he called himself Dr. Les. And Walt Argetsinger because I love to listen to his stories. -Mark Arnold Meghan Dick because we ve become pretty good friends during our confirmation process. -Aylisa Rogers IN OUR PRAYERS Ken & Goodie Belkholm Delores Fluegge George & Gwen Johnsen Marj Maas Helen Nord Jack Stephens Les Stromberg Corinne Argetsinger Prayer Chain Contacts: Pastor Sierra, Phyllis Bergren, Gladys Nelson, Donna Oslund

6 Children and Youth Sunday School Children of all ages are welcome at Immanuel! Ages Kindergarten through 6th grade are invited to participate in Sunday School. Sunday School occurs during worship (Sundays at 9:00am) from September through May. Children gather with their families in the sanctuary for the beginning of worship and are dismissed to Sunday school after the Children s Message with Pastor Sierra. They rejoin their families for a blessing during Holy Communion. This year, our students are using the Spark: Activate Faith curriculum following the lectionary. We are excited to offer Sunday School opportunities for our kids to hear the same scripture texts that their families are hearing in worship, only with the chance to get up and move around and engage with those stories on their own level. It is our hope that having heard the same readings, children and parents will have the opportunity to talk together about what they learned on Sunday morning. 7 Confirmation Join together with your fellow SEVENTH, EIGHTH, and NINTH grade friends to go deeper in your faith. Learn about God and God s people. Discover more about yourself and your faith. Confirmation classes are held on Wednesdays from 6:00PM to 8:00PM from September through May. We gather for dinner and conversation at 6:00PM and then move into class time. It is a three year program. This school year we are studying the Old Testament by learning about important biblical characters ordinary people that God used to accomplish extraordinary things. Mentors This year, each Confirmation Student has been paired with a Mentor - an adult in the congregation. The goal is to build relationships across generational lines, learn from one another, and grow in our faith together. So far this year we have spent time sharing our life and faith stories, eating lots of good food and celebrating Christmas, and watched a great movie, All Saints together. Mentors, be planning a fun way to get together and spend some time with your student this Lenten season. Don t forget to be praying for one another as well.
