He speaks in today s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a remnant in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too selfconfident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus Great Sermon. As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. From such beliefs came superstition. Rub a rabbit s foot and you will scare off evil. Enter a pentagram and you can call the devil. Walk under a ladder and evil will cause you harm. It was believed that there were gods or spirits which inhabited certain trees, thus if you knock on wood you can call those spirits to ward off evil. There is something very human about wanting to believe in such things. There are times we feel overwhelmed by the world and look for something that gives us a feeling that we have control. People search for a four leaf clover believing that it can bring good luck, or avoid having a black cat cross their path because it will bring bad luck. Taken to extremes, this leads to Voodoo, satanic worship and cults. As Christians, we should not believe in such things, because they are worshiping false gods, but that doesn't stop us! Any of you who are on the internet know how prevalent chain letters are. If you pass this letter on to twelve people in ten minutes, something good will occur within an hour. Then there are the threatening kind. If you don t pass this on to five friends, something bad will happen within a week. Of course, they always provide proof by saying that a friend won the lottery ten minutes after passing on the message or got anthrax when they didn t. Needless to say, these are methods of control. By appealing to your fears or hopes, the authors of such letters are making you do their will. It gives them a feeling of power. When you obey their instructions, you are being controlled and weakened. This is even true of those letters which say that you are not a loyal American if you don t pass on a prayer for our troops. Praying for our troops is wonderful. Passing on a prayer through the internet because you have been intimidated is demeaning to a sacred act. The same is true when people take out ads for prayers. How often have you seen Catholic newspapers containing ads for a prayer that is never known to fail. Saying a prayer is asking God for help. He will decide if He wishes to give that help. Saying that it is never known to fail implies that it has power over God! Praying is a wonderful thing. It is acknowledging that God loves us. It is asking for help when we feel at a loss. It is recognizing that He is able to do all things. It is reaching out to a friend. But we also must accept the fact that our needs and desires are not always part of His plan. We must accept that He often says no. That doesn t mean that our payers are unheard, only that His answer is not what we desired. When that happens, we must accept that answer and try to understand how we can find good in it. Of all God s creatures, we are the only ones with free will. Don t let fear or superstition take it away. (Now, about those cell phones you can't turn off...) ~DN
