3 Sunday Readings THIS WEEK S: 6th Sunday of Easter First Reading (Acts of the Apostles 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48) Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 98) Second Reading (1 John 4:7-10) Gospel (John 15:9-17) NEXT WEEK S: The Ascension Pastoral Items Our celebrants for May 12/13: Fr. Leonardo Pestaño Saint Joseph of the Lord First Reading Luke begins recounting the history of the early Church with the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. Curiously, this is exactly how Luke ends his Gospel, with the Ascension of Jesus, in Luke 24:5053. The double narration of this event points to the importance that Luke ascribes to it. Jesus Ascension closes an important chapter in salvation history, marking the end of Jesus earthly ministry. But the Ascension also begins a new chapter in salvation history, the descent of the Holy Spirit. For Luke, the Church begins its mission to tell the world the Good News of Jesus Christ once it has become Spirit-filled.. (Acts of the Apostles 1:1-11) Responsorial Psalm God mounts His throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord. (Psalm 47) Second Reading Paul s Letter to the Ephesians opens with an extended prayer of thanksgiving. Part of Paul s prayer is for the Ephesians to receive wisdom and revelation from God in order to know Him better. He also prays for the Ephesians to have enlightened hearts to see more clearly God s saving work in Christ. (Ephesians 1:17-23) Gospel Mark ends his Gospel account with Jesus' last appearance to the apostles before His Ascension into heaven. Jesus' departure and Ascension was both an end and a beginning for His disciples. While it was the end of Jesus' physical presence with His beloved disciples, it marked the beginning of Jesus' presence with them in a new way. Jesus promised that He would be with them always to the end of time. Jesus' last words to His apostles, Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature, point to His saving mission and to their mission to be witnesses of His saving death, His glorious resurrection and to proclaim the Good News of salvation to all the world. The Archdiocese of Seattle s 16th Annual Quo Vadis Days will take place at Camp Don Bosco near Carnation, Washington on June 25-28, The camp is free due to the generous contributions of the Serra Club, Knights of Columbus, and private donors. Requirements: You must register online at: Please download and print a hard copy of the Health History and Permission Form to bring with you to camp. Make sure that a parent or legal guardian signs the registration form if you are under 18. The Seattle Archdiocesan Quo Vadis Days can only accept registration for young men aged After you register you will receive a confirmation with information about transportation and what to bring. Joyous Renewal-Enduring Faith church & grounds projects come to an end. We are pleased to report that our church and grounds capital projects have been completed. Thank you to everyone who has given so graciously through the Joyous Renewal-Enduring Faith Capital Campaign. Your generosity helped raise funds to pay for two phases of our short-range projects: Ph I (church remodel) and Ph II (sidewalk/alley drainage/11 th St. pull-out/sidewalk) without securing a loan. Parishioners pledged 93% of our 1.1 million dollar goal, and to date we have collected 94% of the pledged amount. The total cost of the project was over-goal by approximately $90,000. This overage, and any uncollected pledges, will be covered by funds in our parish savings account. Project Joyous Renewal-Enduring Faith campaign goal: $1,100,000 Pledge total $1,023,000 Pledges rec d to date $ 965,700 Total cost of project $1,189,859 Estimated overrun $ 224,150 (This number should decrease as final pledges are received this year.) (paid out of parish savings) Thank you again for your patience and understanding during the time of the work. And again, thank you for your generous and faithful contributions. Although this completes our capital campaign we still have plans for further improvements in our parish facilities and grounds, and we welcome your continued support. If you have a capital campaign pending pledge we ask that you complete your pledge donation by June 30, Thank you! 6
