Thomas COMMUNION SHUT-IN VOLUNTEERS M. McBride, G. Puryear, B. Clifford, D. Orlando THE VIGIL OF THIS FEAST is popularly called Hallowe en or Halloween. The solemnity is celebrated on November 1 st. It was instituted to honor all the saints, known, unknown, and according to Pope Urban IV, to supply any deficiencies in the Faithfull s celebration of saints feasts during the year. All Saints Day in the Western Churches, especially the Roman Catholics, Lutherans, and Anglicans is kept on November 1st. The Orthodox Churches observe it on the first Sunday after Pentecost. BOOK OF THE DECEASED during the month of November will be displayed near the Altar reminding each of us of everyone who has gone before us in death. We pray for all these persons and we ask them to accompany us in our journey to God. - ALL SOULS DAY in the Roman Catholic Church, is a day for commemoration of all the faithful departed, those baptized Christians who are believed to be in purgatory because they have died with the guilt of lesser sins on their souls. It is celebrated on November 2 nd. Roman Catholic doctrine holds that the prayers of the faithful on earth will help cleanse these souls in order to fit them for the vision of God in heaven.
3 FAITH Growing in FAITH Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith. November 2010 St. Edward Parish Family Msgr. Robert J. Siffrin, Pastor One Minute Meditations Nurture faith Spiritual growth doesn t stop with formal religious education. To know God better, start with the Bible and consider adding spiritual books or magazines. (Hint: ask a priest or religious for recommendations.) Read so that you may learn more about God s ways. Don t assume No matter how good a judge of character we may be, making assumptions about others intentions or motives is risky. Assumptions become facts in our minds, yet it is impossible to accurately see inside another s heart or mind. Guessing or assuming may lead to misunderstanding. Instead, wait for the truth. Develop a prayerful disposition Many of us would like to pray more but can t find the time. A key is to develop a prayerful disposition. That means limiting activities to a few useful projects, abandoning useless interests, and looking for time to be with God. It s a trade-off, but one that brings the peace of a closer union with God. Copyright 2010 Success Publishing & Media, LLC Follow a sure path to Heaven Our loving Father wants all of his children to follow a path that leads to Heaven. To help, the Catholic Church offers us examples of people who walked the paths of charity, holiness, and heroic virtue. We call them saints. Charity. Although a queen, St. Margaret of Scotland (1093) was dedicated to caring for the poor. In public she never refused beggars, washing their feet and giving them alms. Before sitting down to eat herself, she first fed orphans and destitute adults. St. Peter Claver (1654), horrified by the treatment of West African slaves imported to Colombia, often rowed out to the disease-ridden slave ships to bring food, comfort, and Why Do Catholics Do That Eucharistic Benediction or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is a liturgical service during which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a receptacle, such as a monstrance, on the altar. It is a practice that fosters a deeper God s love. Holiness. St. Thomas More (1535) enjoyed the power and prestige that went with his friendship to King Henry VIII, but he loved God more. He earned a death sentence when he refused to sacrifice the Church to Henry s demands. His last words declared him to be, the King s good servant, but God s first. Heroic virtue. She was only 12 years old when the son of her father s business partner tried to seduce St. Maria Goretti. She refused to be the cause of his sin or to sin herself, and was murdered. Her example of purity had a converting effect on her murderer and he attended her canonization decades later. What is Eucharistic Benediction? spiritual communion with our Lord. Eucharistic Benediction reminds us of the mystery of the Eucharist that Jesus is truly present, body and blood, soul and divinity, in the Blessed Sacrament. It offers us an opportunity to keep watch with me (Matthew 26:38).
4 Growing in Faith Bury the dead and comfort the living November 2010 Page 2 Catholics know that death leads to new life but it is very difficult to lose someone we love. When we or someone we love experiences such a loss, friends and family can be a great comfort. Such acts as burying the dead and comforting the living are Works of Mercy and part of our Catholic faith. Although knowing how to help can be puzzling, there are ways to make a difference. Pray. Pray for the souls who have died that they may find their place in heaven. Perhaps arrange to have that prayer included in the from S cripture The Church calendar is a gift to help us mark the seasons of joy and sorrow, work and rest. We can withdraw from the pattern of the world and remember that we wait in joyful hope for Jesus to come. Beginning at the end of this month, the season of Advent is a time of warning and a time of preparation. Next month we celebrate Jesus coming at Christmas. But he will come twice more: at our own death, and at the end of time. This Gospel reading reminds us that we will never know ahead of time Feasts & Celebrations The first day of Advent falls on Nov. 28 this year and begins a new year in the Church calendar (Cycle A). The Advent wreath is lit in households all over the world as we anticipate the birth of our Lord. Nov. 1 All Saints Day. In the early Church, each saint and martyr was assigned a feast day. However, the persecution of the Christians became so great that there weren t enough days in the calendar for individual commemorations. Eventually Pope Gregory IV designated Nov.1 as All Saints Day. Matthew 24:37-44, Is he here yet? just when he will come for us. Advent is the time to ask, What do I need to do to be ready to greet the Lord? Start by examining your conscience and pick one or two sinful practices you want to eliminate. Then try to spend more time in prayer, attend Mass faithfully, and go to Confession. Finally, spend a few extra minutes each day in prayer. Then when Christmas comes, you will know you are ready to greet the Lord with joy. Nov. 2 All Souls Day. This is a day when we pray for the dead, especially our loved ones and souls in Purgatory. Our prayers and sacrifices can help them get to Heaven faster. Nov. 21 Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. A solemnity that commemorates Our Father s promise to his people of a king who will triumph over their enemies. Jesus is our King. In Baptism and Confirmation, we are brought under his kingship. intentions during Mass in your parish. Be there. Attend the funeral or wake service. Such customs are part of honoring the life of the dead and showing compassion to the living. Show support. Bring a meal to the family. Mass cards, notes and phone calls can also offer comfort. Contribute. Consider making a donation of time or money to organizations such as a local Hospice that provide grace and dignity to those dying. & How does the Church decide who is a saint? There are many people in Heaven who are saints, but whose names we may never know. They are uncanonized saints. Canonization is the formal process by which the Church identifies and determines whether someone has become a saint. In its simplest form, official Church procedures detail three steps to recognizing a saint. First, the bishop of the diocese where the person died begins an extensive investigation. The results are passed to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. If the Congregation approves, the prefect presents the cause to the pope. With the pope s approval, the petitioner becomes venerable and is called Servant of God. Next, beatification, may come after further investigation and a miracle has proven to be attributed to the Servant of God s intercession after his or her death. Then the person can be called Blessed. Finally, canonization may follow additional investigation and a second miracle also proven to have occurred after the beatification and as a result of the candidate s intercession. After canonization, the Blessed is called Saint. Our Mission To provide practical ideas that promote faithful Catholic living.
