2 Dear Friends, Father Nagel s Column - Mass Attendance Welcome to the NEW bulletin format! We will be doing a monthly bulletin which will cover more ground and be an upgrade in format, information and color. This is in an effort to reduce the amount of bulletins wasted each week as we will print in house and refill week by week as needed. It also gives us more flexibility to be creative and utilize local sponsors from the parish and Indy area. Additionally, it will save staff time and pressures weekly. If along the way, you have any suggestions, please contact our Director of Communications, Megan Fish, at megan.fish@stjohnsindy.org In the monthly bulletin, I will attempt to give you updates on ministry and highlights from parish life. I also hope to propose ways for us to continue to grow as individuals, families and a community of faith. As we launch here in August, let me take this opportunity to address a challenge I see as a pastor and shepherd of our local church. While St. John s continues to grow in number of parishioners each week and annually, we are seeing a decline in Mass attendance on Saturday evenings and Sundays. This may be due to several circumstances such as parishioners attending another liturgy closer to where they live, from time to time. It could be that some have moved away and we are not aware of the move. It may also be that some choose not to attend Mass every weekend. Addressing this third concern is my intention in the year ahead. As I have asked Our Lord in prayer what the number one thing is that He desires of me as a shepherd, God has been clear that He desires us to come to receive Him and grow in relationship with Him through Word and Sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist! As we address this invitation and challenge, let me begin with this fundamental question Why do some Catholics choose to not attend Mass every weekend? I suspect that if we were to get to the heart of it, there may be three most common answers. 1) Time Making time in our busy lives can be challenging, especially with demanding careers, children s activities and other things that catch one s attention for entertainment. Is time a challenge for you? If so, would you say that relationship with God is at the top of your priority list when it comes to decision about investment of time? Do others tell you they just don t have time to attend Mass? 2) Commitment Making time to participate in the Holy Mass is really a question of commitment. We all find time for those things we are committed to! If a kid is going to be excellent at a sport, they have to be committed to practice daily. If an adult is going to be successful in their career, they will sacrifice hours to be promoted. If a single young adult is going to pursue courtship with another, they will be committed to growing the relationship. So too, if one hopes to have an excellent relationship with God, one must pursue God with passion in order to be successful in the journey of faith. Are you pursuing a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ through His holy Church? What would you say to a loved one who is isn t committed to giving God an hour of their week? 3) Interest Some Catholics have lost interest in God or the Church and say, I don t get anything out of it. We should get something out of Mass grace, grace and more grace! We should also receive faith formation, build a community of authentic friendships and be inspired to live the faith more fully in our daily lives. However, as in anything worthy of our time, in order to receive, we must first give. Are you giving of yourself by carving out time and preparing each week for the Holy Mass by reading the scripture beforehand, praying for an openness to God s grace and placing yourself before the Lord with an open heart and mind? Are you seeking to be entertained or to be filled up with God s grace? Do you know someone who says they just don t get anything out of the Mass, but aren t really prepared to give anything of themselves? What would you say to that person? Throughout the months ahead, I ask you to join me in prayer for all of our parishioners, family members and friends who are away from the church. Perhaps some need our prayers to simply be more committed to Mass every week. Others need our prayers to have the courage to come back after being away all together for a time. Yet others need our prayers to be passionate about the Holy Mass once again. Would you pray three Hail Mary s daily for these sisters and brothers in Christ, asking our Blessed Mother and our patron St. John the Evangelist to intercede for us? Thanks so much for your consideration! I hope to continue this conversation in various ways throughout the months ahead as we seek to give God glory with our lives and with the life of our parish. With a Father s Love, St. John Catholic Church - Aug/Step 2018 Father Rick Nagel 2 St. John Catholic Church Indianapolis, IN August/September 2018

3 Faith Formation Opportunities at St. John s Who Can YOU Invite? Want to give a life changing gift to a friend or family member? Invite them to explore the Catholic Faith through St. John s RCIA program. Who in your life doesn t know the fullness of the Catholic Faith? Perhaps it s someone who has fallen away from the church and hasn t received First Communion or Confirmation. Or, perhaps it is someone who doesn t know Jesus and is searching for deeper meaning in their life. Who can you invite to the Great Adventure of growing in relationship with Christ as you walk alongside them? Personal invitation is so powerful it changes lives! Take it to prayer and be open to who God places on your heart to invite. In the fall, St. John s will begin a journey of faith to share the richness of our Catholic heritage and tradition with those interested in learning more about Catholicism through our RCIA program beginning in September. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults participate in a period of formation culminating in the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Vigil Mass. If you would like more information about the RCIA program or have questions please contact please contact Deacon David Bartolowits: david. bartolowits@stjohnsindy.org or Preparation for Eternal Life Sacraments Worship & Devotion Sign your kids up today for Religious Education Children Catechesis St. John s will begin our children s religious education program this coming fall. The program, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, is an approach to the religious formation of children and is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an atrium, a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use. We meet on average twice a month after the Sunday 10am Mass. Along with providing religious education for your child, we also encourage parents to attend an adult catechesis program that coincides with the children s schedule so that a true family-based faith program is available to your family at St. John s. If you would like more information, please contact Deacon Dave Bartolowits at or david.bartolowits@stjohnsindy.org Youth Confirmation Are you a teenager between the ages of and have not yet been confirmed? The Sacrament of Confirmation is a turning point in your faith journey. Through this Sacrament, you will be fully initiated into the Catholic Church and receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which enable you to live out your faith in the fullness of grace. If you would like more information about classes beginning this fall, please contact Deacon Dave Bartolowits at or david. bartolowits@stjohnsindy.org.
