1 Parish News April 2017 From Suffering to Salvation On Palm Sunday, we will travel with the crowds who welcome Jesus as Son of David. How can we help but loudly rejoice at the coming of the one who would save all of humanity? On that same day, however, our rejoicing will turn to repentance as the passion narrative of our Lord Jesus Christ is proclaimed reminding us of the very dear cost of our salvation. This journey prompted by Jesus obedience to God whereby he emptied himself of all glory and every dignity, assuming the role of a slave. Because of Jesus obedience, he rose from the depths of humility and from his death on the cross and returned, risen and glorified. Please join in the blessing and procession with palms from the gathering space on Palm Sunday. The Easter Sunday sacred texts call us to great rejoicing and gratitude so that we might humbly take the gifts that are ours through the risen Christ. Please pray for the catechumens and candidates as they complete their journey to the Easter Sacraments. May the grace of Easter enable us to do good! Plan to celebrate the Triduum [Mass of the Lord s Supper - Holy Thursday, April 13, 7 pm; Good Friday service, April 14, 1:30 pm; and the Easter Vigil, April 15, 8:45 pm] at Lourdes. 2 dead. The Three Days The sacred Paschal Triduum of the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord shines forth as the high point of the entire liturgical year. In the Triduum liturgy, we are present as God reveals his glory in the redemption of his wayward children through the obedience, even unto death on the cross, of his only begotten Son, and restores those children to new life by accepting his Son s sacrifice in the resurrection from the Holy Thursday of the Lord s Supper recalls the institution of the Eucharist, the ministerial priesthood, and the gospel command to service. The Exodus reading recalls how the blood of the Passover lamb alerted God to spare the lives of the first born sons of Israel. Saint Paul gives us the first account of the Eucharist, when Jesus identified the unleavened bread and cup of wine of the Passover meal as his own body broken for us and his blood of the new covenant. In his telling of the Last Supper, John substitutes the foot washing for the institution of the Eucharist to teach us that participation in the Eucharist commits us to service to one another and our world. As we celebrate the institution of the ministerial priesthood, our pastor washes the feet of representatives of the community. This evening, gifts for the poor are included in the presentation of bread and wine. Pope Benedict wrote that Our communities, when they celebrate the Eucharist, must become ever more conscious that the sacrifice of Christ is for all, and that the Eucharist thus compels all who believe in him to become bread that is broken for others, and to work for the building of a more just and fraternal world. Following Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is taken to a place of repose where the Lord s abiding gift of Himself may be adored and we can also begin to keep vigil with the Lord as his passion unfolds. The Friday of the Passion of the Lord is composed of three parts: the Liturgy of the Word, the Adoration of the Holy Cross, and Holy Communion. In the readings, we meet the Suffering Servant whose obedience to the Father becomes the source of salvation for all who obey him. Lifted up into glory, the One sent into the world accomplishes his mission. The Spirit he surrenders falls upon his Mother and Beloved Disciple standing at the foot of the Cross, the beginning of a new family we are invited to join. We venerate the cross upon which hung the salvation of the world. We receive the Lord s Body as nourishment to sustain the Paschal Fast by which we honor the Lord s death. Good Friday is followed not by Easter, but by Holy Saturday. Jesus, having been forsaken by the Father and surrendering the Spirit, has, as we confess in the Apostle s Creed, descended into hell. Jesus suffers the second death for us, that alienation from the living God that would be our natural inheritance for the sins of our first parents and our own. Christ has been made sin for our sakes. It is a dead day. The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night is the preeminent celebration of the dying and rising of Christ. In the Service of Light, the fire is blessed, the Paschal candle lit, and the Exultet tells of the night when Christ broke the prison bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld. In the Liturgy of the Word, readings from throughout the scriptures tell history of our salvation. Following the homily comes the Baptismal Liturgy. The Easter Vigil is the privileged time for baptism, as baptism incorporates us into the dying and rising of Christ. We renew our baptismal promises and bring our Elect to the waters of baptism where they become living icons of the dying and rising of Christ for our community. The newly baptized are sealed with the Holy Spirit in confirmation, and complete their initiation by receiving the Eucharist for the first time with the community. Christ is risen and with him all creation! Light replaces darkness, joy replaces sadness, life replaces death. There is no failure the Lord s love cannot reverse, no humiliation he cannot exchange with blessing, no anger he cannot dissolve, no routine he cannot transform. All is embraced by the victory of his cross and resurrection. May we always be good stewards of Easter s light, see Resurrection as a daily event, and yearn for Jesus love as intensely as he yearns for ours. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.

U.S. POSTAGE PAID Cincinnati, Ohio Permit No Established 1927 For 90 years, Our Lady of Lourdes has been a vibrant and life-giving parish. The proud history of OLL began very humbly on a beautiful Easter morning on Sunday April 17, 1927 in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Murray, which sat where the current Parish Office Center is today. The first Mass was celebrated by our founding pastor Fr. Francis Biendl with more than thirteen families gathered together to pray and work to build their new parish... By October 16, 1927, our first permanent Church, fondly referred to as the White Frame in later years, was dedicated by Archbishop John T. McNicholas with over 50 families registered in the parish. These families were united in their faith and as they worked and prayed together, they became a close community of people who enjoyed lawn fetes, chicken dinners, dances, and parties. Happy Anniversary to Us! April 17, 1927 In commemoration of our strong heritage, we invite you to a light reception following all Masses during the weekend of April 22 and 23! As the original Church was being erected, a small group of mothers went door to door to recruit potential students for a school. When they achieved the required minimum of fifty students, a two-room frame building was also constructed to house the school under the direction of the Sisters of Mercy. The school opened in September of 1927 with Sr. Mary Wilfred Haren as the first principal and teacher of grades one through four, while Sr. Mary Chrysostom Enright taught grades five through eight. Each room relied on its own centrally located pot bellied stove for heat during the winter, stoked hourly by the eighth grade boys. Over the post-world War II era, Our Lady of Lourdes parish continued to grow and prosper. Our beautiful campus of over 11 acres reflects our proud heritage of the caring and sharing that prevailed. By 1949 there were 600 families in the parish with school enrollment of 318 students. Our current school building was built under the leadership of our legendary pastor Fr. George Lamott, who led our parish from 1945 to This state of the art structure featured 12 classrooms, a cafeteria, greenboards, communication system, air filters, and "noiseless, disappearing locker doors." During these prosperous years, our liturgies took place in almost every building of our campus. By 1953, we had outgrown the white frame and a basement church was attached to the school, which is now used as our cafeteria. In 1958, a new chapel-auditorium was completed above the basement church, serving as our place of worship until We now use this space as our "old gym." Our beautiful rectory was completed in April The convent which now serves as our Parish Office Center was built for our dedicated Sisters of Mercy who unselfishly gave of their time and talent to our students. Many organizations were established during these formative years, many of which still meet today. The OLL Men's Society, Ladies Sodality, Athletic Club were just a few of the groups that developed a deep sense of community among its parishioners. Long-held traditions such as the annual Sauerkraut dinner on Fat Tuesday and Family Festival began. To be continued next month
