Lutheran hurch of the Resurrection Sunday, July 15, Grove Eighth Sunday after entecost INTRODUTION When Amos told what he saw when God held up the plumb line of justice next to Israel that the poor were being trampled he was a threat to the power of priests and king. John the Baptist also spoke truth to power, and Herod had him beheaded. In Herod s fear that Jesus is John returned from the dead, we may hear hope for the oppressed: that all the prophets killed through the ages are alive in Jesus. We are called to witness to justice in company with them (Silence please for prayer and meditation) RELUDE Morning Musical Meditations Various (lease stand as you are able) ONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness and grow into the fullness of Jesus hrist, our Savior and Lord. Amen Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus hrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus hrist was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of hrist, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 1

RAYER OF THE DAY A O God, from you come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works. Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments; and also that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness, through Jesus hrist, our Savior and Lord. Amen (lease be seated) SHARED MINISTRY REMINDERS FIRST READING Amos 7:7-15 A A reading from Amos 7 This is what [the Lord GOD] showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8 And the LORD said to me, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A plumb line. Then the Lord said, See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by; 9 the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. 10 Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, Amos has conspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. 11 For thus Amos has said, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land. 12 And Amaziah said to Amos, O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; 13 but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom. 14 Then Amos answered Amaziah, I am no prophet, nor a prophet s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees, 15 and the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel. A Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God. SEOND READING Ephesians 1:3-14 A A reading from Ephesians 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus hrist, who has blessed us in hrist with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 just as he chose us in hrist before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5 He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus hrist, according to the good pleasure of his 4

will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in hrist, 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In hrist we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope on hrist, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God s own people, to the praise of his glory. A Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God. (lease stand as you are able) Halle, Halle, Hallelujah WOV 612 THE GOSEL Mark 6:14-19 The Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to you, O Lord. 14 King Herod heard of [the disciples preaching,] for Jesus name had become known. Some were saying, John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him. 15 But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old. 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, John, whom I beheaded, has been raised. 17 For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother hilip s wife, because Herod had married her. 18 For John had been telling Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother s wife. 19 And 5

Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. 22 When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it. 23 And he solemnly swore to her, Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom. 24 She went out and said to her mother, What should I ask for? She replied, The head of John the baptizer. 25 Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter. 26 The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb. The Gospel of the Lord. raise to you, O hrist. 7 HYMN OF THE DAY Let Justice Flow Like Streams ELW 717 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH A We profess our faith together through the words of this Affirmation of Faith. We believe in God the reator, the risen hrist and ever-present Spirit. We believe God whirled fire and wind into a closed room to stir up the hesitant and cautious disciples. We believe God still stirs things up, turns things upside down, sets people on fire with inspiration and zeal. We believe the Holy Spirit moves unexpectedly, creating opportunity, guiding reconciliation, fostering community. The Holy Spirit will not be housebroken or bound by narrow rules or closed minds or doors. The Holy Spirit is like wind and fire, and we believe the church is most alive when we dare to cooperate with the surprising, creating, loving Spirit of God. 7

THE RAYERS OF INTERESSION (After each petition concludes with Lord, in your mercy, the congregation responds, hear our prayer ) EAE A The peace of the Lord be with you always And also with you A I invite you to share the eace of hrist with one another. (lease be seated) THE OFFERING In My Heart Arr. B. arlson (lease sign the red welcome roster and pass it on as a ritual of friendship. Then pass it back noting the names of those you re worshiping with today.) (lease stand as you are able) THE OFFERING SONG raise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow ELW 884 raise God, from whom all blessings flow; raise him, all creatures here below; raise him above, ye heav'nly host; raise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Text: Thomas Ken, OFFERING RAYER Be known to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, as you were made known to the disciples. Receive these gifts, and the offering of our lives, that we may be your risen body in the world. Amen. SERVIE OF HOLY OMMUNION Jesus said, I am the bread of life. You who come to me shall not hunger; you who believe in me shall never thirst. In company with all who hunger for spiritual food, we come to this table to know the risen hrist in the sharing of this life-giving bread. God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to God. 8

Let us give thanks to God most high. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Eternal God, who has created the heavens and the earth, giving breath to every living thing, we thank you for making us in your image, for forgiving us when we act as though you have no claim on us, and for keeping us in your steadfast care. Holy, holy, holy God of love and majesty, the whole universe speaks of your glory, O God most high. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God! Hosanna in the highest! We remember that on the night of betrayal and desertion, Jesus took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to the disciples saying, This is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, Jesus took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sins, Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. By eating this bread and drinking this cup, we proclaim hrist s death, celebrate hrist s resurrection, and await hrist s coming again. Amen. ome, hrist Jesus. Gracious God, we ask you to bless this bread and cup and all of us with the outpouring of your Holy Spirit. Through this meal make us the body of hrist, the church, your servant people, that we may be salt and light, and leaven for the furtherance of your will in all the world. Amen. ome, Holy Spirit. THE LORD S RAYER God, remember us in your love, and teach us to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, and the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. INVITATION TO OMMUNION Through the broken bread we participate in the body of hrist. Through the cup of blessing we participate in the new life hrist gives. The gifts of God for the people of God. ome, for all things are now ready. (lease be seated) OMMUNION 9

RAYER AFTER OMMUNION A Life-giving God, in the mystery of hrist s death and resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of heaven to nourish your people. Send us forth as witnesses to Jesus resurrection that we may show your glory to all the world; through the same Jesus hrist, our risen Lord. Amen. BLESSING May God who has brought us from death to life fill you with great joy. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen SENDING HYMN Lord, Dismiss Us with Your Blessing ELW

July Helping Hands: We continue with the focus of supporting children in our community this month with the collection of new backpacks and school supplies. What?! School supplies in July? Yes, even though we are just getting in the groove of summer, many local school districts start back in early to mid-august, so we want to be ready! Donations will go to the increasing numbers of children we host at Gathering Inn and to those in the St. John s rogram for Real hange, which has also seen their numbers increase. ontinued thanks for all of the tremendous support from all of you! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NOTES ON TODAY S SRITURE READINGS Amos 7: Amos was not the kind of prophet attached to temples or royal courts. Rather, he was an ordinary farmer from Judah (the southern kingdom) called by God to speak to Israel (the northern kingdom). God s word of judgment through Amos conflicted with the king s court prophet Amaziah, whom Amos encountered at Bethel. Ephesians 1: In Jesus, all of God s plans and purposes have been made known as heaven and earth are united in hrist. Through Jesus, we have been chosen as God s children and have been promised eternal salvation. Mark 6: As Jesus and his disciples begin to attract attention, Mark recalls the story of John the Baptist s martyrdom. Like John, Jesus and his disciples will also suffer at the hands of those opposed to the gospel of salvation. 13

Readings for Next Sunday, July 22, 2018 Ninth Sunday after entecost Mark s gospel makes clear how great was the press of the crowd, with its countless needs to be met, on Jesus and his disciples. Yet in today s gospel Jesus advises his disciples to get away and rest, to take care of themselves. Sometimes we think that when others are in great need we shouldn't think of ourselves at all; but Jesus also honors the caregivers need. We are sent from hrist s table to care for others and for ourselves. We invite you to read these texts as you prepare for next Sunday s worship. Jeremiah 23:1-6 Ephesians 2:11-22 Mark 6:30-34,
