2 Welcome to worship at First Lutheran! We especially welcome all who are visiting this morning! Held in Christ, our Center, and living in grateful response to God s love and grace, we welcome everyone, without exception. We make known our gratitude and appreciation of all, including people of every race, sex, age, color, creed, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital and familial status, physical and mental ability, health status, socioeconomic situation, education level and political affiliation. Please join with us as we seek to celebrate the image of God in all people, nurture meaningful relationships, and share our collective gifts in response to the world s deep hunger for hope, love, grace, justice, and peace. In the red pew hymnal (Evangelical Lutheran Worship), page numbers are at the bottom of the page in the front of the book, and hymn numbers are typically at the top of the page for the remainder of the book. Large print hymns are available from the ushers. An asterisk (*) invites you to stand in body or in spirit. All who thirst for God s love are welcome to participate during Holy Communion. Please extend your hands to receive Holy Communion or cross your arms to receive a blessing. Children s Bibles, Busy Boxes, and White Boards are available at the sanctuary entrance. A staffed nursery (for ages four and younger) is available down the hall across from the library. An usher will be happy to help you find it! Hearing assistance devices are available outside the sanctuary or from an usher. We also have a wheelchair and a defibrillator available let someone know if assistance is needed. You are invited to join us after worship for a time of fellowship in the Gathering Space right outside the sanctuary. C Glory to you, O Lord. 1 Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat? 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, Six months wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, said to him, 9 There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people? 10 Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost. 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world. 15 When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. 5

6 16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said to them, It is I; do not be afraid. 21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going. An usher will guide you forward. You will be given a wafer and offered a choice of two chalices. The wine is in a silver chalice; the grape juice is in a glass chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you are unable to come forward, let an usher know, and communion will be brought to you. Parents, please assist children when they come forward to extend their hands if they are to receive the bread and wine. Text and music reprinted with permission using One License #A More about today s worship Tenth Sunday After Pentecost Today is the first of five Sundays with gospel readings from John 6, the first four of which focus on Jesus as bread of life. Today Jesus feeds thousands of people with five loaves and two fish. What we have, what we bring to Jesus table, seems like it is not nearly enough to meet all the needs we see around us. But it is not the adequacy of our supplies or our skills that finally makes the difference: it is the power of Jesus working in the littlest and least to transform this world into the world God desires, a world where all the hungry are satisfied (from Sundays and Seasons). This is such an exciting time for which you have all been waiting so patiently! We intend to make our recommendation to the church council very soon. After that occurs, you will have the opportunity meet with the candidate, and you will also be invited to a special congregational meeting whereby all members will have a chance to vote on the candidate. Both the social opportunity and congregational meeting will take place at the church sometime in August. Your vote matters so please stay tuned! Forward in Faith Offering As we continue to move forward in faith in our search for a new pastor, we ask for your continued support with a donation to help cover expenses needed to welcome our new pastor to St. Peter. Volunteers needed August 17 We re looking for volunteers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, August 17 to help with the Second Harvest fresh food drop in the FLC parking lot. Lutheran Social Services Gratitude Gifts Calendar To kick off a five-week nutrition program for seniors in August, a Gratitude Gifts Calendar is available in the gathering space. The calendar gives us daily reminders of our abilities for which we can be grateful, and for which we might give a gift. Confirmation Camp This week Pastor Ted and some of our confirmation students will be at our Bible Camp, Shetek Lutheran Ministries this week. Blessings with them as they gather in fellowship, enjoy the outdoors, and have faith building opportunities. Nursery Attendants Wanted The FLC nursery welcomes children 4 years and younger during worship services on Sunday mornings (and sometimes during the education hour). We are looking for students in grades 9-12 to expand our team of nursery attendants, serving about once per month and being paid $10/hour of child care time. Big Horns - Summer 2019 There will be an informational meeting Sunday, August 26 at 10:00 a.m. for those in grades and parents that are interested in backpacking in the Big Horns Summer No commitment needed at this time but come if you want to learn more about the adventure planned for summer Community Interest Items: Summer Organ Recitals: The Sioux Trails Chapter of the American Guild of Organists performs free noontime organ recitals on Tuesdays, 12:10 p.m through August 14 in Mankato. Remaining recitals will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. More info is at Back to School Backpack Project Friends of Learning (FOL) is organizing their annual Back to School Backpack Project to provide school supplies to local students whose families have limited resources. FOL believe that each child should start the school year with the tools needed to learn and therefore appreciates whatever cash contributions or school supplies you can donate.
