Lesson from the Acts of the Apostles: The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, of all things which Jesus began to do and to teach, until the day on which, giving commandments by the Holy Spirit to the Apostles whom He had chosen, He was taken up: to whom also He showed Himself alive after His Passion by many proofs, for forty days appearing to them and speaking of the Kingdom of God. And eating together with them, He commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (said He) by My mouth; for John indeed baptised with water, but you shal1 be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days hence. They therefore who were come together asked Him, saying: Lord, will Thou at this time restore again the kingdom of Israel? But He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments which the Father has put in His own power: but you shall receive the power of the Holy Spirit coming upon vou, and you shall be witnesses unto Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the uttermost part of the earth. And when He had said these things, while they looked on, He was raised up: and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they were beholding Him going up to heaven, behold two men stood by them in white garments, who also said: Ye men of 041Mass Page 5 of 24

He continues: Wherefore, O Lord, we Thy servants, as also Thy holy people, calling to mind the blessed Passion of the same Christ Thy Son our Lord, His Resurrection from the dead and glorious Ascension into heaven, offer unto Thy most excellent Majesty, of Thy gifts bestowed upon us: a pure Host, a holy Host, a spotless Host, the holy Bread of eternal life, and the Chalice of eternal salvation. Upon which vouchsafe to look with a propitious and serene countenance, and to accept them, as Thou was graciously pleased to accept the gifts of Thy just servant Abel, the sacrifice of our Patriarch Abraham, and that which Thy High Priest Melchisedech offered to Thee, a holy sacrifice and spotless victim. We most humbly beseech Thee, almighty God, to command these Things to be carried by the hands of Thy holy Angel to Thine Altar on high, in the sight of Thy divine Majesty, that as many as shall partake of the Most Sacred Body and Blood of Thy Son at this Altar, may be filled with every heavenly grace and blessing. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant prays for the dead and offers the Blood of Christ in their behalf. Through Christ our Lord. Through whom, O Lord, Thou always creates, sanctifies, quicken, bless, and give us all these good things. The Celebrant finishes the Canon. He takes the Host and the Chalice and lifts them heavenwards. Per Through ip sum, et cum ip so, et in ip so, est tibi Deo Patri omnipoténti, in unitáte Spíritus Sancti, omnis honor et glória. Him, and with Him, and in Him, is to Thee, God the Father almighty, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, every honor and glory. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us: And lead us not into temptation. R. But deliver us from evil. The Priest: Amen. (Silently). Deliver us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, from all evils, past, present and to come; and by the intercession of the blessed and glorious Mary, ever Virgin, Mother of God, and of Thy holy Apostles Peter and Paul and Andrew, and of all the saints, mercifully grant peace in our days, that thru the assistance of Thy mercy we may be always free from sin, and secure from all disturbance. Breaking the Sacred Host into two parts, and then placing the Half he held in his right hand upon the Paten, he says: Per eúndem Dóminum nostrum Iesum Christum Fílium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitáte Spíritus Sancti, Deus. Through the same Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God. He concludes by singing: V. Per ómnia sǽcula sæculórum. R. Amen. V. For ever and ever. R. Amen. Then, with his right hand he breaks off a small Particle of the half of the Host he holds in his left, placing the larger portion of It upon the paten alongside the right Half already there. Then, holding the small Particle in his right hand above the Chalice and holding the Chalice itself in his left hand by the node below the cup, he says in a clear voice: Pax + Dómini sit + semper vobís+cum. R. Et cum spíritu tuo. The peace + of the Lord be al+ways with + you. R. And also with you. He drops the Particle of the broken Host into the Chalice: saying in a low voice. 041Mass Page 17 of 24

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, Who according to the will of the Father, through the cooperation of the Holy Spirit, has by Thy death given life to the world: deliver me by this, Thy most sacred Body and Blood, from all my iniquities and from all evils; and make me always adhere to Thy commandments, and never suffer me to be separated from Thee. 19 Prayer for Grace. Percéptio Córporis tui, Dómine Iesu Let not the partaking of Thy Body, O Lord Christe, quod ego indígnus súmere Jesus Christ, which I, unworthy, præsúmo, non mihi provéniat in Iudícium et presume to receive, turn to my judgment and condemnatiónem: sed pro tua pietáte prosit condemnation; but through Thy goodness mihi ad tutaméntum mentis et córporis, et ad may it be to me a safeguard and remedy both medélam percipiéndam: Qui vivis et regnas of soul and body. COMMUNION OF THE PRIEST. Panem cœléstem accípiam, et nomen Dómini invocábo. Dómine non sum Dignus, (in a low voice) ut intres sub tectum meum, sed tantum dic verbo, et sanábitur ánima tua. Sanguis Dómini nostri Iesu Christi custódiat ánimam meam in vitam ætérnam. Amen I will take the Bread of heaven, and call upon the name of the Lord. Lord, I am not worthy (in a low voice) that Thou should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed. (x3) He receives the Sacred Host. May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul unto life everlasting. What shall I render to the Lord for all He has rendered unto me? I will take the Chalice of Salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. Praising, I will call upon the Lord and I shall be saved from my enemies. He receives the Precious Blood. May the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul unto life everlasting. Amen. The form used by the Priest distributing Holy Communion is: Corpus +Dómini nostri Iesu Christi custódiat ánimam tuam in vitam ætérnam. Amen. May the Body of our Lord + Jesus Christ preserve thy soul unto life everlasting. Amen. After Communion the Priest retuns to the altar and reposes any remaining Hosts in the Tabernacle. He then begins with the Ablutions, during which he purifies the Paten, Ciborium, and Chalice. This is a reminder of the Church s Jewish origins and the ritual cleansing in the temple. 041Mass Page 19 of 24
