The Creation of Man (cont'd) After the creation of Adam, The Lord God said: It is not good for man to be alone; let us make him a help like unto himself.... Then the Lord God cast a deep sleep upon Adam; and when he was fast asleep, he took one of his ribs, and filled up flesh for it. And the Lord God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman; and brought her to Adam. And Adam said: This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of me. Wherefore a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be two in one flesh (Gen. 2:18, 21-24). On the strength of Adam s words, this now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh, some scholars interpret - and perhaps more correctly - the term rib to mean a portion of Adam s body. According to St. Thomas, Eve s body was fashioned in its full perfection by adding new matter - obtained either through direct creation or more probably by the conversion of pre-existing inorganic matter - to that derived from Adam. God supplied immediately and miraculously that which in the rest of men arises gradually and slowly - that is, the growth from a germ through the embryo to a complete body. St. Thomas also points out that Eve was taken from Adam s side, to indicate that she was to be at his side as a companion in all the circumstances of life. Because woman was formed from man, man is head of the woman and of the family. Sacredness of Sex From what we have said, it is obvious that sex is something sacred and that it has a providential purpose. The sacred writer makes this terse comment on the creation of our first parents: Male and female he created them (Gen. 1:27). In other words, God willed and created two sexes. The matrimonial union shall be between one man and one woman and shall be indissoluble. Wherefore a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be two in one flesh (Gen. 2:24). Our Lord appeals to this passage in establishing the indissolubility of marriage (Mt. 19:5). The existence, difference, and union of the sexes are intended to lead to the birth of a child: God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth (Gen. 1:28). God could have - by a mere act of His will - brought men directly into the world as full-grown individuals; instead, he chose to associate parents with Himself in bringing new beings into the world. Brandon Sims will give a presentation about the FSSP Nigerian apostolate, Nne Enyemaka Parish, where he will be traveling this summer to assist with their mission. 4 The Creed by Msgr. Rudolph G. Bandas, Ph.D; S.T.D. 10. The Creation of Man The creation of man was the most solemn moment in the production of the universe. For man is the head and the heart, the soul and the artist, the very crown of creation. He makes the inanimate and irrational creatures around him vibrate with divine praises, he makes them sing and proclaim the glory of God in the concern of creation. The minerals, the plants and the animals about him, the sun and stars above him, cluster around him and beseech him: O man, great is God, adore Him. The Creation of Adam God commanded the chemical elements of the earth to assemble, and the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth (Gen. 2:7). At the very moment that Adam s body reached the point of full perfection, at that very instant God infused into it a spiritual, immortal soul: And God breathed into his face the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Gen. 2:7). The Human Soul The soul is the principle of perfection in man. Without it, the eye would be without a gleam, the face without expression, the body without vigor, the faculties of man without movement. It is not depressed by fever, paralyzed by cold, exhausted by heat, consumed by disease. It is active and victorious even in a body broken by suffering or persecution. It radiates forth from the body under the form of intelligence and liberty. Unaffected by matter and indivisible, the soul cannot come from the souls or bodies of the parents. Being spiritual, it cannot come from matter. Being intellectual, it cannot come from animal life. The perfections of the effect cannot exceed the perfections of the cause. It can come only from God who creates it out of nothing: Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth before... the dust return into its earth from whence it was, and the spirit return to God who gave it (Eccles. 12:1, 7). The soul is created at the moment that it is infused into the body - about nine months before the birth of the child. To be continued... But do not diseases and sufferings and physical evils of all kinds - floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. - strike a discordant note in God s creation? How can it be said that divine Providence directs the whole of creation toward a manifestation of His external glory and a realization of the happiness of His creatures, when evils of every kind abound in the world? Let it be noted at once that for those who have lost sight of all spiritual standards, whose only aim in life is pleasure and earthly well-being, bodily sufferings and physical evils constitute an insoluble irritant. For those who have a Christian outlook on life and who are guided by the spirit of faith we may offer, first of all, certain common sense considerations on the problem of evil: 1. Evil lies at the root of things which are created, limited, finite. Imperfection, suffering, disintegration are embedded in their very nature and inherent in their essential nothingness. 2. Nature, with its untold powers and forces, is a delicately balanced system. If out of ignorance, stupidity or perversity we throw its mechanisms out of gear, if we handle its pent-up energies carelessly or unskillfully, if we force it to operate in abnormal ways, destruction, disaster and sufferings will inevitably follow. 3. An even more delicately balanced instrument is the human body. If we misuse or abuse the body or its faculties and powers - sufferings, disease, nervousness, broken health and a premature death will follow. 4. Pain is a great stimulus to action. It has moved scientists to undertake researches and studies which have brought untold blessings to all mankind. God brings great good out of evil. 5. The natural calamities - such as cyclones, floods, etc. - which occasionally overwhelm a segment of the population rouse man from his religious indifference and fill him with reverence for the Creator; they make men realize that if he is helpless before the overwhelming power of God s laws of nature he will be equally helpless before the force of God s moral laws. In His parables - which were stories intended to teach a supernatural lesson - our Lord frequently used created things as a starting point for inculcating divine truths. The wheat, cockle and mustard seed; the fig-tree, fruits, vine and vineyards; the birds, the lilies, and the grass of the field; the rain, wind, sunlight and floods; the barn and the grains; the harvest and the reapers; the shepherd and the sheepfold; the fishing net and the fish; the plow and the oxen - all these were elevated to serve as vehicles of the highest and most magnificent verities of the supernatural order. The followers of Christ were taught to find God in nature - or to harken to nature speaking to them of God. They were taught to discern the resemblances and harmony between nature and the supernatural, to observe the two ascend to one and the same God. They learned to see that God and nature, though distinct, were inseparable. The Church was not slow in incorporating the same principle into her liturgy. Through the external objects of the liturgy she wishes us to see the invisible things of God so that while the outward symbols strike our sense, their deeper meaning may fill our minds. By cribs, tombs and processions, by paintings, frescoes, statues and stained glass windows, she teaches us the meaning of the Incarnation, redemption, Resurrection and Pentecost. By the universal language of color she portrays to us the character of the feast and of the Mass. Through vivid ceremonies she re-enacts before our eyes in an unbloody manner the sacrifice of Calvary. But the external objects of the liturgy are not merely vehicles of supernatural truth - whether it be bread, wine, water, salt, oil or any other they represent as well as produce a spiritual effect. To be continued... Appropriate Dress: In obedience and humility to God and charity to neighbor, please be dressed appropriately when attending Holy Mass. Men should be in collared shirts (no T-shirts, graphics etc.) and long trousers. Ladies should be in opaque clothing, not tight-fitting, coming up to the neckline front and back, covering the shoulders and upper arms, skirts coming down below the knee, even when seated. 10 Number of Angels The Creed by Msgr. Rudolph G. Bandas, Ph.D; S.T.D. 8. The Angels (cont'd) The number of angels is exceedingly great. Scripture represents them as an army or as a legion. In the Book of Daniel we read that thousands of thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times a hundred thousand stood before him (7:10). The Scriptures assign nine different titles to the angels: seraphim, cherubim, thrones, dominations, principalities, powers, virtues, archangels and angels. Since Scripture carefully distinguishes between these different names, it is clear that these terms denote different dignities and offices. These groups constitute among themselves a perfectly ordered society because order prevails everywhere in God s universe. 9. Creation Lower Creatures The doctrine of creation runs like a golden thread throughout the Sacred Scriptures. The Old Testament opens with the words: In the beginning God created heaven and earth (Gen. 1:1). He made heaven and earth, the sea, says the Psalmist, and all things that are in them - For he spoke and they were made: he commanded and they were created (Ps. 145:6; 32:9). In the Book of Isaias the Lord tells us that He is the sole cause of the universe: I am the Lord that makes all things, that alone stretches out the heavens, that establishes the earth. And there is none with me (44:24). He made all things out of nothing: I beseech thee, my son, look upon heaven and earth and all that is in them: and consider that God made them out of nothing (2 Mach. 7:28). The New Testament continues the same teaching: All things were made by him, and without him was made nothing that was made (Jn. 1:3). Created things reveal the perfection of their Creator. God, as we said, is the cause of all things. Since the perfection of the effect must in some manner preexist in the cause, God prepossesses - if you may say so - all the perfections of creatures, being Himself supremely and universally perfect. Every creature represents Him, imitates Him, participates in a limited measure in His perfections. In other words, God speaks to us, reveals Himself to us, in the things which He has made (Job 38). Here again, Scripture is eloquent in affirming this truth: The heavens show forth the glory of God; and the firmament declareth the work of his hands (Ps. 18:2). He is clothed with light as a garment, stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and has made all things in wisdom, so that the earth is filled with His riches (Ps. 103). The invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made. His eternal power also and divinity... (Rm. 1:20). Man is the spokesman of created things in their praises of the Creator. The heavens, says the Psalmist, show forth the glory of God (Ps. 18:2). The term glory enshrines at once two ideas: it stands for God s perfections revealed in a particular thing or event - His omnipotence, wisdom, immensity, goodness, etc. and, secondly, the praise which this manifestation of divine power should evoke on the part of man. God is wonderful in His works: O Lord our Lord, how admirable is thy name in the whole earth! For thy magnificence is elevated above the heavens (Ps. 8:2). It is man s blessed privilege to encourage and direct the creatures chorus of praise to the Almighty: Kings of the earth and all people; princes and all judges of the earth; young men and maidens; let the old with the younger, praise the name of the Lord: for his name alone is exalted, the praise of him is above heaven and earth (Ps. 148:11-14).
