2 Human Notions of God What is God like? by Rev. J Edgar 1962 To ask ourselves the question: What is God like? assumes that we are capable of knowing Him at all and more basically still, that we are capable of knowing that He is. These are, actually, philosophical questions and we must leave them to the philosopher to answer. They are not questions that preoccupied the inspired authors of Holy Scripture. The existence of God was, to the devout Hebrew, so clear a fact that for him only the fool says in his heart, there is no God (Ps.13:1). Nevertheless, even the believing Israelite realized that not all peoples were so privileged with God s favors as was his own, and that question might arise for them. His answer was, not surprisingly, the classical response of the logical mind: For all men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God, and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing Him who is, and from studying the works did not discern the artisan: (Wis.13:1). St. Paul made use of this very argument to challenge the agnosticism and polytheism of his own pagan contemporaries (Rom.1:19-23). It is a revealed truth, then that man can come to a knowledge of the fact that God is from his observation of the universe about him. This is obviously merely conceptual knowledge of God. It is like being presented with documentary evidence that Julius Caesar of Napoleon Bonaparte also existed. If one knew nothing more that this about God, he would hardly be entitled to say that he had a knowledge of Him. Unaided reason can, of course, go further, and tell us what must be the essential qualities of the creator-god. But the impersonal character of such information is reflected in the ultimate judgments of those whose towering minds reached as far into the heavens as the eye of reason can see. Plato turned to Orphism for religious consolation. St. Thomas Aquinas described rational knowledge of God as straw in comparison to the intimate, mystical experience with which he had been blessed. At its best the human mind is a very limited instrument. When it is confronted with the infinite and the uncreated, it can do no more than Job and exclaim: Behold, I am of little account; what can I answer you? I put my hand over my mouth (Job 40:3-4). Great thinkers have never been ashamed to echo these sentiments; it is the small mind that reverses the roles assigned to God and man in Genesis and proceeds to create God in its own image and likeness. To be continued... The CCD program will begin this year at 10:15am with catechist orientation in the classroom area on Aug 6, parent orientation on Aug13, and the first class on Aug 20. Parents of CCD children are obliged by the Archdiocese to complete and follow the instructions on the Parent Notification Form. This form is available in the vestibule and the parish hall. It must be filled out and returned by Aug 6. Registration for CCD classes is now taking place. Registration forms are located in the vestibule and parish hall. Please complete and return forms to the CCD box no later than Aug 6. The CCD program needs catechists. New or inquiring catechists are encouraged to fill out a Catechist Information Form. This form may be returned to the CCD box by Aug 6. Catechists should plan to attend the catechist orientation on Aug 6. CCD parents should attend the parent orientation on Aug13. 6 INSTRUCTION SEEDS It is often the very indistinctness of divine things which enables us to endure them. ~ Father Faber Long for that life that has no vanity under the sun, but the truth under Him who made the sun. ~St. Augustine The first rule of Christian charity is to believe no evil if we have not seen it, and to be silent if we have seen it. ~Pope Clement XIV The name of our Blessed Lady is like a very strong tower: if a sinner takes refuge in it, he will be saved. ~St. Anthony of Padua It is the highest of honor and glory never to resist the authority of Mother Church. ~St. Bernard Let us love our Lord, let us love His Church: Him as our Father, her as our Mother. ~St. Augustine We ought never to think we have done enough when there is question of eternity. ~St Gregory The chains of a habit are too small to be felt until they are too strong to be easily broken. ~Anonymous Ignorance is no excuse when we have neglected to learn what we are obliged to know. ~St. Ambrose Our sins are like a little grain of sand beside the great mountain of God s mercy. ~Curé of Ars No act, however long, is safe, that does not match a thought that is still longer. ~Anonymous No sin is more injurious to God than despair of his mercy. ~Anonymous They that will no be counselled cannot be helped. ~Anonymous God often visits us, but most of the time we are not at home. ~Abbé Roux The soul dies when God is lost, for He is its life. ~St. Augustine What Scripture forbids we may not do, and what it commands we should not fail to accomplish. ~St. Basil A man s worth is to be determined by the sacrifices he has made. ~Father Faber From Fr McCarthy: my thanks for support, many generous gifts and especially the prayers during my six years in Atlanta. My time at St. Francis has been a great blessing for me. I will take away many fond memories but most importantly many friendships. I ask for your continued prayers as I begin working in a new part of the Lord s vineyard, and I assure you of my prayers for you. I hope that from time to time you will be able to make the journey to Lincoln, at least to visit the seminary and perhaps to attend an ordination. It will be well worth the effort. 8 Thomas Aquinas Quotes To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible. There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship. We must love them both, those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject, for both have labored in the search for truth, and both have helped us in finding it. The things which we love tell us what we are. Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you. Amen. Better to illuminate than merely to shine to deliver to others contemplated truths than merely to contemplate. The Study of philosophy is not that we may know what men have thought, but what the truth of things is. Sorrow can be alleviated by good sleep, a bath and a glass of wine. Wonder is the desire of knowledge. Most men seem to live according to sense rather than reason. How is it they live in such harmony, the billions of stars, when most men can barely go a minute without declaring war in their minds? I would rather feel compassion than know the meaning of it. I would hope to act with compassion without thinking of personal gain. The truth of our faith becomes a matter of ridicule among the infidels if any Catholic, not gifted with the necessary scientific learning, presents as dogma what scientific scrutiny shows to be false. Friendship is the source of the greatest pleasures, and without friends even the most agreeable pursuits become tedious. The Courage and Encourage Apostolates are Church approved ministries for those who experience same sex attraction and their family and friends. An Open House will be held on Saturday, July 15th at the Chancery of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, 2401 Lake Park Drive SE, Smyrna, GA for anyone with an interest in the Courage/Encourage ministries. Mass begins at noon followed by a variety of speakers, film screenings, and a complimentary dinner. Please RSVP by Monday, July 10th by contacting David Plitt at Long-Term Volunteer Opportunity with the FSSP in Guadalajara, Mexico beginning late August or early September, 2017, for months, renewable, to participate in the many varied activities of the apostolate and help with the day to day duties in the parish and in the house, e.g., catechism, acolyte training, charitable works in orphanages and hospitals.
