God s Message Faith The truths which God at sundry times and in diverse manners has revealed to us through the prophets and by His Son are contained in the Bible and Tradition. We shall now say a few words about each one of these deposits of God s message. 1. The Bible: The word Bible means the Book. Originally the Bible was not one book, but a collection of books, written on papyrus and parchment, and scattered over Europe and the Orient. The Bible was, in fact, a whole library. The original word for Bible biblia meant books. It was only about the fourth century of the Christian era that the present volume form was adopted and thereby the seventy-two books of the Bible became one book. The Bible is composed of the Old and New Testaments. The term testament signified covenant, agreement, pact. Applied to Sacred Scripture, it designates the agreement between God and man. The Old Testament has 45, the New Testament 27 books. The index at the beginning of each Testament enables the reader to locate easily any book. Passages from books of the Bible are found in every Mass of the missal. The faithful who spend at least a quarter of an hour in reading Holy Scripture with the reverence due to the word of God and after the manner of spiritual reading, may gain a partial indulgence. The Protestant version of the Old Testament omits seven entire books: Tobias, Judith, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, 1 and 2 Machabees. It also omits parts of the books of Esther and Daniel. These missing books and sections formed a part of the Bible for fifteen hundred years until the Protestant Revolution. Luther excluded them because he objected to the teachings found in them. 4 (cont'd) The Creed by Msgr. Rudolph G. Bandas, Ph.D; S.T.D. The Glad Tidings of the Kingdom In these days God hath spoken to us by his Son (Heb. 1:2). The promised Messiah, the expectation of the nations, was to be neither a man nor an angel. He was the Incarnate Son of God! His then was a message which the heavenly Father wished to proclaim only through His Son: No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, hath declared him (Jn. 1:18). Neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him (Matt. 11:27). God spoke to us through His Son because He wished to speak to us as Father. The Son s message, in turn, had a pronounced paternal impress, and was to be received with filial obedience and respect by the hearers. The central point of Christ s teaching was the glad tidings of God s kingdom: Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel (good news) of the kingdom of God (Mk. 1:14).... Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom (Matt. 4:23). Practically all the parables of our Lord deal either with the nature, or the members, or the Head of the kingdom. The kingdom of God as announced by Our Lord has three places: 1. The visible kingdom, founded by Christ upon Peter and the apostles. This was to be His representative on earth, proclaim His message, dispense His graces and continue His work. No longer was man to be subject to the degrading religions of the past, with their superstitious doctrines and immorality. He was to be led to his destiny by a Church which spoke with the authority of God and was guided by His Spirit of infallible truth. 2. The internal kingdom of divine life or sanctifying grace in the soul. By partaking of divine nature (2 Peter 1:4), man attains to an unheard of, ineffable dignity: You have received the spirit of adoption of sons, whereby we cry: Abba (Father)... And if sons, heirs also; heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ (Rom. 8:15-17). What tremendous privileges for us poor children of Eve who shortly before were weeping and groaning in this valley of tears and sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death (Lk. 1:79). 3. The eternal kingdom of heaven. Sanctifying grace is the seed of glory (1 Jn. 3:9) which one day will blossom into the full flower of the Beatific Vision in heaven. The last day, when the glorified Christ will leave His heavenly throne, come down upon earth, and inaugurate His eternal kingdom, will be the happiest day of our existence. The Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with him... and in the time of the evening there shall be light (Zach. 14:5, 7). He will drive away all evils, wipe away tears (Apoc. 7:17) and renew the earth. Then shall come what was spoken of by St. Paul when he wrote: Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard: neither hath it entered into the heart of man, what things God hath prepared for them that love him (1 Cor. 2:9). 6 (cont'd) The first glad tidings The Creed by Msgr. Rudolph G. Bandas, Ph.D; S.T.D. The first bright ray of light and hope penetrating the dark midnight after the Fall, was the message addressed to Adam and Eve. It is known as the proto-evangelium, the first glad tidings of our salvation: I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed (Gen. 3:15). All subsequent prophecies will be only a clearer delineation of her seed, of Him who would crush Satan and be victorious over sin. Description of the Promised One The next Messianic prophecy connects the promise and the future Redeemer with the Semites, whose father Sem was a son of Noe (Gen. 9:26-27). The circle of contracts further with Abraham, a member of the great family of Sem. After having led Abraham from distant Chaldea to the land of Canaan, the Lord promised to him that his seed would be a great nation and that in it all the nations of the earth would be blessed (Gen. 12:2-3; 15:5; 22:17-18). According to St. Paul (Gal. 3:14) this promise was fulfilled in Christ. The prophecy of Balaam prefigured the future Messiah by a scepter and a star and connected Him with the house of Jacob (Num. 24:17). We are told further that the Messiah will be of the flesh and seed of David; He will be King and Son of God, and His reign will have no end (II Kings 7:12-14). With the dignity of king the Messiah will combine in His Person that of priest forever according to the order of Melchisedech (Ps. 109:4). The Evangelist of the Old Testament In the brilliant galaxy of prophets who arose in the troubled, decadent and paganistic period following the disruption of Solomon s kingdom, no one sang the praises of Messiah so enthusiastically, no one described Him so completely, as the prophet Isaias. He is justly considered by the Church Fathers as the evangelist of the Old Testament. Chapters 7 to 12 of his book are described as the Book of the Emanuel. He draws a marvelous picture of the Man of Sorrows, of the Christ who became our ransom and the expiation of our sins. His best known prophecies are the following: hope of a Redeemer (60:1-3), longing after the Savior (45:8), the virgin birth (7:14), Christ s divine attributes (9:6), the seven gifts (11:1-3), the precursor (40:3), the Messiah s exquisite gentleness (42:2-3) and the Passion (Ch. 53). Prophecies on Christ s birthplace are found in Micheas (5:2), on the Holy Eucharist, in Malachias (1:11), and on the last judgment, in Joel (2:30-32). Although death has prevailed in the world thousands of years, man is no more accustomed to it today than he was in the beginning. Man wishes to live - live in his body - forever. When disease and death begin to encroach upon him, he fights against them with all the groaning, weeping, and sorrow which have always been found among men of the past. It might be noted in passing that in our country there is no divorce or absolute wall of separation between the federal government and religion. The Declaration of Independence refers to the Creator as the bestower of rights and liberties. Our first president, George Washington, affirmed that religion and morality are indispensable supports of the prosperity of the state. Our presidents have attributed to Divine Providence the prosperity of our government, have publicly thanked God for His blessings, appointed days of prayer, and urged the people annually to join in public thanksgiving to God on Thanksgiving Day. The president and others take their oath on the Bible. Congress employs chaplains in its opening sessions. Legal documents are dated in the year of our Lord. When a witness is sworn, he affirms so help me God. Our coins bear the words - In God We Trust. Ministers of religion are exempt from military service, or are commissioned as chaplains. Contributions to religious institutions are deductible from income taxes. Denominational schools may avail themselves of war surplus material on a par with government schools. The School Lunch Act - which enables children to get wholesome nourishment in school at reduced prices or even wholly free of charge, and which aims to improve the dietary programs and luncheon equipment at schools - applies to private as well as public schools. 3. God Spoke to Us The Central Theme of God s Message God, who, at sundry times and in divers manners, spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, last of all, in these days hath spoken to us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world (Heb. 1:1-2). In these few words St. Paul sums up the whole history of God s merciful designs in regard to fallen mankind. God, it is true, speaks at sundry times and in divers manners. Yet all prophecies have the same theme, they all point to the future Messiah - now supplementing one another, now mutually explaining one another. Each prophet adds a new detail so that when the fullness of time is come (Gal. 4:4), when the clouds are about to rain the just and the earth bud forth a Savior (Isaias 45:8), there emerges from the ensemble of these Old Testament oracles a perfect figure of the Promised One. As St. Augustine so well said, In the Old Testament there is a veiling of the New Testament, and in the New Testament there is a revealing of the Old Testament. The third question to which the secularist offers no satisfactory answer is this: What constitutes man s we ; being? Following the method of the Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas, we shall point out the utter shallowness of the various solutions of the secularist: The secularist cannot find happiness in riches: Often the richer a man is, the more discontented he is, and the more greedy and avaricious he becomes. He attains riches with the greatest labor, clings to them with worry and anxiety, easily loses them, and finally is separated from them forever at death. All this often makes the rich man the unhappiest being on earth. The divorces, murders, and suicides among the wealthy testify to the fact that riches do not bring peace and happiness. The secularist cannot find happiness in bodily strength and beauty: These are likewise unstable and easily lost. In a few hours a fever, a poisoning, any internal ailment may reduce a strong and healthy body to utter helplessness. No matter how robust we may be, it will not be many years before our bodily powers will begin to decline. The secularist cannot find happiness in knowledge and love: A casual visit to the library and the sight of countless volumes containing information of which he is entirely unaware (more so today with the computer and the Internet) will quickly humble the intellectually proud man and make him unhappy. Friendship, it is true, has its consolations. But often it is of short duration or ended for the slightest reason. The best friends often become the worst enemies. We long for One who understands and whose love does not change or fail. There is in man a constant and persistent desire for complete happiness. Man lives more in the future than in the present, continually looking forward to the day when he will be happier - a day, alas, which will never come in this world. The worldling who brushes aside all religion and revelation, which alone can supply an answer to these harrowing questions, finds himself groping in the dark.
