News from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul VITA Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Feb 7 th April 12 th 2012 The Society, in partnership with the Atlanta Prosperity Campaign, provides free federal and GA income tax preparation for those below the $49,000 household income threshold. During the traditional income tax reporting season, guests are invited to have their taxes prepared free of charge. This service affords guests the ability of saving the preparation cost and ensures that all credits (such as the Earned Income Tax Credit) and other deductions that provide monetary refunds are included. History of the Chair of Unity Octave On October 3, 1899, the eve of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the Rev. Lewis Thomas Wattson, an Episcopal clergyman later known as the Very Rev. Paul James Francis, S.A., arrived at Graymoor, N.Y. to establish a community of Episcopal Franciscans called the Friars of the Atonement. A year previously, Miss Lurana White, a devout young woman, had founded in the same place a community of Episcopal nuns known as the Sisters of the Atonement. For ten years the two communities were jointly known as the Society of the Atonement and lived the monastic life as members of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Looking about him on a largely irreligious world, Father Paul grieved most because Christians seemed divided into warring sects and factions. He began to preach corporate reunion of the Episcopal Church with the Roman Catholic Church. Because of this he was banned from the pulpits of the Episcopal Church. In his brown robe and sandals, Father Paul took his message to the streets and parks of New York. He caused quite a sensation. Father Paul James Francis was determined to carry on a vigorous apostolate for the return of all separated Christians to communion with the Holy See. To further this aim, he inaugurated in 1908 the Chair of Unity Octave (Jan ). One year later, the members of the Society themselves received the grace of conversion, and on October 30, 1909, they entered the Catholic Church in a body. It astonished no one when he took his own advice and brought his community with him into the Catholic Church. With the blessing of Pope St. Pius X, they were permitted to continue as a religious society in the Catholic Church and were commissioned to carry on the apostolate of Christian unity as their community aim. The Chair of Unity Octave was also approved as a Catholic devotion by Pope Benedict XV in an Apostolic Brief in In 1921, at their annual meeting in Washington, the Catholic hierarchy of the United States unanimously adopted the Octave for all the dioceses in the country. Under the patronage of St. Peter, the first Vicar of Christ, Bishop of Rome, and St. Paul, the Apostle of the Gentiles, the Chair of Unity Octave has flourished and grown. It is now observed in many parts of the world. 6 Knight of Columbus Chili Cook-Off after High Mass, next Sunday, 1/22/12. The proceeds will go toward the Ultrasound Project, where the Knights of Columbus purchase ultrasound machines for crisis pregnancy centers. These machines have proven that they can be the key to turning the heart of a young woman who is considering abortion by showing her that she has life within her. This friendly competition is open to anyone in the parish who would like to submit their favorite chili recipe to a taste-test. A $2 contribution buys a bowl and will allow all participants to sample all the competitors' chili and judge the winner. We expect this to be a delicious and worthy fundraising event once again this year. Homeless Shelter Volunteer Workers The Shrine of the Immaculate offers daily food & shelter services. Venette recently offered Mass for the following intentions: Sunday, Jan. 8~ The Intentions of the Braaten Family Jan. 9~Conversion of a Friend by Adam Markich Sacrament of Anointing ~Extreme Unction: This sacrament should be received with a proper disposition which includes at least a habitual attrition for sin (hatred and sorrow for sin committed and determination not to sin again from a supernatural motive such as dreading the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell). If received with a proper disposition it has the following effects: Primary effects: 1. An increase in sanctifying grace which of its nature destroys venial sin and the remnants of sin, and makes the person more pleasing to God and merits a greater reward in Heaven. Temporal punishments for sin are remitted to the extent of the degree of charity and penance of the recipient. 2. Sacramental grace which strengthens the soul against all evils, past, present, and future and gives the person a claim to all the actual graces he needs in this illness, especially to resist diabolic temptations and to have confidence in God. Moral weakness due to the effects of sin is healed. Secondary effects: 1. The forgiveness of mortal sins if there are any on the soul. This can happen if the person is so ill that he cannot confess his sins or even manifest his attrition for them (e.g. he is unconscious or his mental faculties are lacking). He need only have habitual attrition for his sins. 2. The healing of the bodily illness to the extent that it is expedient for salvation. This happens much more frequently than we might think. The most important thing to remember about this sacrament is that it should not be put off until it is too late. If someone s life is threatened by illness, he should be anointed. If he cannot summon a Priest himself, his family and friends are responsible for doing so. The effects of this sacrament are very powerful. They can make a great difference including anything from physical healing to eternal salvation. News from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul VITA Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Feb 7 th April 12 th 2012 The Society, in partnership with the Atlanta Prosperity Campaign, provides free federal and GA income tax preparation for those below the $49,000 household income threshold. During the traditional income tax reporting season, guests are invited to have their taxes prepared free of charge. This service affords guests the ability of saving the preparation cost and ensures that all credits (such as the Earned Income Tax Credit) and other deductions that provide monetary refunds are included. 10 Faith and Public Policy Workshop for all Catholics The Archdiocese of Atlanta invites you to join us for a Faith and Public Policy Workshop sponsored by the Georgia Catholic Conference on Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 8:30 12:00 noon at St. Ann s Catholic Church, 4905 Roswell Road, NE, Marietta, Georgia The workshop will include a presentation on Catholic Social Teaching, Faithful Citizenship, and today s public policy issues. The Gospel relates the Circumcision of Our Lord. Various prayers in the Divine Office for the Feast refer to the Blessed Virgin Mary and her Motherhood. is the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. We read in Sacred Scripture: In the Name of Jesus every knee shall bend in Heaven, on Earth, and in Hell. (Phil. 2:10) and Whatever you do in word or in work, do all in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ. (Col. 3:17). Traditionally, Catholics bow their head as sign of respect when the Name of Jesus is mentioned in their presence. They especially avoid taking the Holy Name in vain and they use it in the time of temptation. When tempted to sin one can reverently repeat: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus! The demons hate the Holy Name and flee before its reverent pronunciation as they do before the Sign of the Cross. Friday is the Feast of the Epiphany. This ancient Feast was celebrated in the Church even before Christmas itself. It commemorates the manifestation of Our Lord to the world. The focus is on His manifestation to the foreign visitors representing the Gentile nations. However, Our Lord s manifestation at His baptism in the Jordan and at His miracle of changing water to wine at Cana are also celebrated. This Feast is especially appropriate to be celebrated as a family. Children can place figures of the Magi at the family Nativity Scene. The story of the Three Kings can be told or the song We Three Kings can be sung. Some incense can even be burnt before the crib. The significance of the gifts of the Magi is as follows: Gold is the proper gift to a King and this gift acknowledged Our Lord s Kingship. Frankincense or incense is properly offered to God, thus the gift of Frankincense acknowledged Our Lord s divinity. Myrrh is used to anoint a body in preparation for burial and this gift foreshadowed Our Lord s Passion, death, and burial.
