2 The Trinity in Holy Scripture What is God like? by Rev. J Edgar 1962 Although the Savior has, accordingly, shown us the Father it would be a serious mistake to conclude that He had removed from God the mantle of majesty and the veil of mystery. Our knowledge of the divine nature has been enriched incalculably through the Incarnation, but even of Himself Jesus warned no one knows the Son except the Father (Matt. 11:27). Only once does our Lord give a definition of God and its very simplicity underlines the ultimate mystery of divinity: God is Spirit (John 4:24). In His teaching Jesus also posits the existence of three persons in God, adding a dimension to our knowledge of God that increases rather than diminishes the mystery. In the Gospels Jesus most frequently refers to Himself as Son of Man a title of manifold implications. Actually the origin of this designation is lost in antiquity; it first appears in Mesopotamian literature two or three millennia before the Christian era, then reappears in the book of Daniel (chapter 7) and in the apocryphal book of Enoch with which our Lord may well have been familiar. The title is used differently in each case, but it can truly be said that in every instance the person to whom it is applied is both human and more than human, a somewhat enigmatic figure who pleads, vindicates, or symbolizes the salvation of mankind. Jesus is acknowledged as son of God on several occasions, but the Jews used this title in a much wider sense than the words themselves might suggest to us: the angels, the king, the righteous man were all sons of God. But Jesus also speaks of Himself simply as the Son in relation to the Father, and in an unmistakable manner: He is Son in such a way that only He can know the Father, or the Father Him (Matt. 11:27); He has been Son, sharing the glory of the Father before the world existed (John 17:5); He says I and the Father are one (John 10:30). But it is equally clear that He is not alone with the Father; that there is another person, the Holy Spirit or the Paraclete who is distinct from both of them for He proceeds from the Father to bear witness concerning the Son (John 15:26-27). The powers and prerogatives of the Spirit are those possessed by the Son, just as the Son s are those of the Father (John 16:14-15) so that all three appear as equal to one another. Jesus speaks at length about the pedagogic role of the Paraclete (this word means helper or - as it is often translated - advocate ) in the Gospels, principally in the discourse which the fourth evangelist places at the last Supper (John 14-17), but in scattered sections of the Synoptic Gospels as well (Matt. 10:20; cf. Luke 12:12; Matt. 12:31-32). Not surprisingly it was precisely as a directing and illuminating influence that the inspired authors of the Old Testament books described the Spirit of God (Ez. 11:5; Joel 3:1; Ps. 142:10), and, significantly, identified this Spirit with the Wisdom of God (Cf. Wis. 9:17; Prov. 8:22-31 and Judith 16:17; Gen. 1:2). Conclusion Little has been said directly about the justice and judgment of God although the Scriptures are replete with references to these. The history of God s dealings with men manifests His love for them far more than it does His justice, however, and it can surely be said that those who love Him need not fear His judgment. One of the most memorable verses in the New Testament reminds us that if our heart blames us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things (1 John 3:20). It is not God that man must fear, but himself, for it is man who alienates and man whose heart grows cold, so much so that Jesus could ask, When the Son of Man comes, will he find, do you think, faith on the earth (Luke 18:8)? If, on the contrary, we know anything about God, it is that He has progressively drawn closer and closer to humanity, taking on our very nature in an ultimate gesture of love and, though crucified as man, is destined to return again that he may be, finally, all in all (1 Cor. 15:28). J Edgar 1962 The Death of Jesus on the Cross (cont d) The death of Jesus on the Cross was ordained as a sacrifice because He willingly gave His life to that end (John 10:17-18) exemplifying His own words that no greater love exists than to lay down one s life for his friends (John 15:13). Critics forget that the person who suffered the cruel death of the Cross was not human but divine for God was truly in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself (2 Cor. 5:19). God did not single out some human victim to pay the bloody price of sin; He offered Himself, in His human nature as a ransom. Who, understanding this, can charge Him with insensitivity? But why so ugly a death or why death at all some may persist in asking? There are, again, a multitude of possible answers, though we must always remember that God s purpose is not necessarily evident to us. St. Paul, however, has stressed the parallelism between Adam s sin and its consequences and the obedience of Christ and its fruits. Death was the penalty of sin (Rom. 5:12), and thus the death of Christ cancels man s debt. The Life and Teaching of Jesus The knowledge that we have about God from the birth and death of Jesus does not exhaust for us the content of New Testament revelation. The very person of our Lord, His life and teaching, provide us with an immeasurable source of reflection on the mystery of God. At the Last Supper the apostle Philip, echoing the request of Moses that he and the others be shown the Godhead, received from Jesus the assurance that he who sees Me sees also the Father (John 14:9). Of course the Savior s human nature veiled the divine, much as the angel of the Lord or the cloud of glory shrouded that which no man can see and live, but Jesus quickly explains in what manner the Father may be seen in Him: The Father dwelling in Me, it is He who does the works: (John 14:10). What these works were, we know from the Gospels, but St. Peter summed them up for us in his discourse to the household of Cornelius: He went about doing good and healing all who were in the power of the devil (Acts 10:38). The deeds of Jesus were not ends in themselves, since He frequently appealed to His works as proof of His divine commission and authority, but they were always motivated by compassion, never by anything that could be construed as self-glorification. The hard words that He occasionally uttered were for the heartless ad the hypocritical; His rebukes were for the proud and the vindictive. With men of sincerity He was warm (Mark 10:21) even convivial, so much so that His enemies called Him a glutton and a wine-drinker (Matt. 11:19). When Jesus proclaimed Himself the way, and the truth, and the life (John 14:6), it was because as God become man He invited men, through an imitation of Himself, to become like God. 6 Continued What is God like? by Rev. J Edgar 1962 The Incarnation The Incarnation teaches us much about God. Christ did not consider the prerogatives of divinity a thing to be clung to, but emptied Himself... and appearing in the form of man, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, even to death on a cross (Phil. 2:6-8). The motivation of this supreme act of condescension was love; For God so loved the world that He gave His Only-begotten Son (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9; 1 John 3:16). So true and meaningful is this for the Christian that St. John can warn: He who does not love does not know God; for God is love (1 John 4:7-8). It is, of course, the love of compassion, the kind of love that St. John urges us to imitate: He who has the goods of this world and sees his brother in need and closes his heart to him, how does the love of God abide in him (1 John 3:17)? Man needed deliverance, deliverance from the darkness of the world that alienates him from God, because it blinds him to the true light (cf. 1 John 1:5; 2:11; 4:4-6); it was the darkness of sin. The compassionate love of God resulted, then, in redemption. The Death of Jesus on the Cross The Exodus, as we saw, was a saving act of God. Not simply materialistic, its ultimate purpose was the creation of a nation free to worship the only God. We observed, however, that the God of the Exodus is rejected by many who wrongly interpret His saving gesture as an exclusion of mercy and grace to other peoples. The God of the redemption effected through Christ Jesus is also scorned by the misinformed. They regard the God who permitted our Lord to die on the Cross as a bloodthirsty monster, comparable only to the hideous idols of ancient times in whose honor human sacrifice was offered. The death of Jesus was, indeed, a sacrifice, a propitiation for our sins (1 John 2:2) but to look upon it from a materialistic point of view would be an absurd and crude distortion. Human sacrifice as such, the killing of a man to placate God, is hateful to the Lord: I am going to bring such evil upon this place... because... the Kings of Judah have filled (it) with the blood of the innocent. They have built high places for Baal to immolate their sons in fire as holocausts to Baal: such a thing as I neither commanded nor spoke of, nor did it ever enter my mind (Jer. 19:3-5). 8 The Shekinah What is God like? by Rev. J Edgar 1962 It is pre-eminently the fourth evangelist who identifies Jesus with the uncreated Word of God made flesh (John 1:1-14; 1 John 1:1) and in whose Gospel Jesus calls Himself, by implication, the Word of the Father (cf. John 10:33-36). There are many passages in the other writings of the New Testament in which the Lord speaks as, or is spoken of as, the Wisdom of God (cf. Matt. 23:34 and Luke 11:49; Matt. 11:16-19 and Prov. 1:20-24; Matt. 11:28-30 and Sirach 6:24-29; 51:23-27; 1 Cor. 1:24). It is, in fact, becoming more and more apparent to students of the New Testament that the first Christians - those of Palestine - taught the divinity of Jesus in terms that were, as should be expected, specifically Hebraic. The Incarnation, as a doctrine, was comprehensible to a convert of Jewish background and education, when explained by reference to the Wisdom, Word, and Shekinah of God which, they knew, had often descended to abide in their midst. Jesus Himself referred to His body as a temple (John 2:19-21; cf. Mark 14:57-58) and to His whole person as greater than the temple (Matt. 12:6), an obvious comparison with the Temple that housed the Shekinah of God. It is of Himself as the Shekinah that He also speaks when stating that where two or three are gathered together for my sake, there am I in the midst of them (Matt. 18:20) for the rabbis of that period had a saying to the effect that where two or three are reading the Law, the Shekinah is there in their midst (Pirke Aboth 3:3). J Edgar 1962 The Evangelists and the Incarnate God (cont'd) The conception of Jesus in the womb of His mother is likened, by the evangelist, to those other occasions on which God made His presence manifest within specific confines. As the cloud of the Shekinah hovered above the tent of the Assembly and the temple of Solomon and then descended within, so does it overshadow Mary at the Annunciation and fill her with the Holy One (Luke 1:35). It is the cloud of the Shekinah again from which issues the heavenly voice attesting to his divine filiation (Matt. 17:5). All Souls envelopes are available in the vestibule of the church. Sunday, Nov 5 - All-Saints Festival sponsored by The Knights of Columbus and the Squires will be after Mass on Sun, Nov 5. The Knights will sell lunches. The Squires will run games for the children and there will a parade of saints. Please come and have your children dress as their favorite saints. Cake Walk for Syrian Refugees: During the All Saints party, the Cake Walk fundraiser proceeds will help the Christians in Syria. We need people to donate cakes, pies, & cookies and bring them on Sun.
