2 Readings for the 2nd Sunday of Lent - Year B 2nd Sunday of Lent 3rd Sunday of Lent 25th February th March 2018 First Reading Genesis 22:1-2, 9-13, Exodus 20:1-17 Second Reading Romans 8: Corinthians 1:22-25 Gospel Mark 9:2-10 John 2:13-25 PSALM RESPONSE: GOSPEL ACCL: I will walk in the presence of the Lord In the land of the living. Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ! From the shining cloud, the Father s voice is heard: This is m y Beloved Son, hear Him. Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ! GOSPEL: Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone by themselves. There in their presence He was transfigured: His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than earthly bleacher could make them. Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus. Rabbi, he said, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for You, one for Moses and one for Elijah. He did not know what to say; they were so frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a voice from the cloud, This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to Him. Then suddenly, when they looked around, they saw no-one with them anymore but only Jesus. As they came down the mountain He warned them to tell no-one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what rising from the dead could mean. Did You Know? The words of the voice from the cloud echo the words from heaven at Jesus baptism, You are my Son, the Beloved, my favour rests on You. (Mark 1:11) The three disciples who witness Jesus glory in this episode are the same three who will witness His agony on the Mount of Olives on the night before He died. Jesus is joined by Elijah and Moses in this episode. They represent the Prophets and the Law, major section of the Hebrew Scriptures. Symbols & Images In scripture, mountains are often the places where God communicates with human beings. Moses & Elijah both experienced God s presence and action on mountain tops. This Gospel has common elements with those stories overshadowing cloud, awe and majesty, brilliant clothing, fear - to describe the manifestation of God. Here God is manifest in the person of Christ himself!

5 STATIONS OF THE CROSS Every Friday during Lent, the Stations of the Cross will be held in MHC Church at 7.30pm, followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Except for the First Friday of March, when we will begin with the Stations of the Cross followed by Holy Mass. Come and join us as we walk with Our Lord on His way to Calvary; to love and compassionate Him on behalf of all mankind, and to make reparation to Him for all He has suffered for each one of us! You are invited to make this night a time of Lenten Spiritual Exercises in preparation for Easter. Stational Mass The Stational Mass for the Southern Deanery will be held in our parish on Thursday 15th March at 7.30pm at Mary Help of Christians Church. All parishioners are encouraged to attend the Mass to support all those preparing for the Easter Sacraments. Please bring a plate of supper to share in the Parish Hall! Divine Will Holy Mass Mass to honour the death of Luisa Piccaretta will be celebrated by Fr Roman Palma on Tuesday 6th March at 7.30pm at the Maronite Catholic Church, 379 Goodwood Road, Westbourne Park. Copies of The Hours of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ and The Virgin Mary in the Kingdom of the Divine Will, will be available for purchase at $26.00 each. Supper and film will follow Mass. But it wasn t always that way. As a child he contracted polio and also became deaf. Like many people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Rattanak faced isolation, with a lack of opportunity to escape poverty. After joining the Deaf Development Program run by Caritas Australia s partner, Maryknoll Cambodia, his life was transformed and he is now supporting himself, his wife and baby.
