2 Readings for the First Sunday of Advent - Year C 1st Sunday of Advent 2nd Sunday of Advent 2nd December th December 2018 First Reading Jeremiah 33:14-16 Baruch 5:1-9 Second Reading Thessalonians 3:12-4:2 Philippians 1:3-6, 8-11 Gospel Luke 21:25-28, Luke 3:1-6 PSALM RESPONSE: GOSPEL ACCL: To You, O Lord, I lift my soul. Alleluia, alleluia! Lord, show us your mercy ands love, and grant us your salvation. Alleluia. GOSPEL: Jesus said to His disciples: There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the clamour of the ocean and its waves; men dying of fear as they await for what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is at hand. Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive what is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man. Did You Know? Advent is the beginning of the Church s liturgical year. The Advent period is concerned with waiting for the coming of the Christ child. A recurring theme in the Gospels read during Advent is looking forward to the end times when Christ will come again. The Advent Wreath is one way of preparing for the coming of the Christ Child. The circle of greenery is a symbol of God s love without beginning or end, while the four candles represent the four weeks of preparation time. One candle is lit each Sunday during Advent. Symbols & Images The images of the end times used by Luke were common in Jewish Apocalyptic literature of the time. For Christians, looking forward towards the final coming of God as Lord of all history and all creation is an action filled with hope, because their liberation is near at hand.

6 THE TWO-FOLD COMING OF JESUS CHRIST We preach not one coming only of Christ, but a second also, far more glorious than the first. The first revealed the meaning of His patient endurance; The second brings with it the crown of the Divine Kingdom. Generally speaking, everything that concerns our Lord Jesus Christ is twofold. His birth is twofold: one, of God before time began; the other, of the Virgin in the fullness of time. His descent is twofold: one, unperceived, like the dew falling of the fleece ; the other, before the eyes of all, is yet to happen. In His first coming He was wrapped in swaddling clothes in the manger. In His second coming He is clothed with light as with a garment. In His first coming He bore the cross, despising its shame; He will come a second time in glory accompanied by the hosts of angels. It is not enough for us, then, to be content with His first coming; we must wait in hope of His second coming. What we said at His first coming, Blessed is he whom comes in the name of the Lord, we shall repeat at His last coming. Running out with the angels to meet the Master we shall cry out in adoration, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. The Saviour will come not to be judged again but to call to judgment
7 those who called Him to judgment. He who was silent when He was first judged, will indict the malefactors who dared to perpetrate the outrage of the cross, and say, These things you did and I was silent. He first came in the order of Divine Providence to teach men by gentle persuasion; but when He comes again they will, whether they wish it or not, be subjected to His Kingship. The prophet Malachi has something to say about each of these comings. The Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple. That is the first coming. Again, of the second coming he says, And the angel of the covenant whom you seek. Behold, the Lord Almighty will come: but who can endure the day of His coming, and who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner s fire and like fuller s soap; He will sit like a refiner and a purifier. Paul pointed to the two comings when he wrote to Titus, The grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ. You see how he has spoken of the first coming, for which he gives thanks, and of the second to which we look forward. Hence it is that by faith we profess, which has just been handed onto you, we believe in him who ascended into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead; and his kingdom will have no end. Our Lord Jesus Christ will, then, come from heaven. He will come in glory at the end of this world on the last day. Then there will be an end to this world, and this created world will be made new. A Reading from the Catecheses of St Cyril of Jerusalem

10 & Farewell It is with both sadness and joy that I have decided to step down from the role of FFC (Faith Formation Coordinator) at the end of December to focus on my children and my teaching career. I would like to take this opportunity to say I feel very blessed to have worked at the Morphett Vale Parish these past years alongside many wonderful people, who volunteer their time to support the Morphett Vale Parish. Thank you for working with me to present the CLOW, RCIA and our Children s Sacrament Programs to many children, adults and families. Thank you for being a part of our programs and special celebrations including First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Holy Communion, Easter Vigils and Christmas events. You have all been a great blessing to me and to those on their faith journeys. Without your hard work, generosity of time and talents, and your deep faith and love of God, I would have been at a loss. I am truly grateful for all you have done and continue to do for our parish community. A massive thank you also to Father Roman and Kathleen for all their support during my time at the Parish. May God bless each one of you abundantly for all your hard work and good deeds. Finally, a special thank you to the parents and families of our 2017/2018 Sacrament Program who supported their children to prepare for the sacraments, and who organised a beautiful thank-you card, flowers and gift for me after the Holy Communion celebrations on Sunday 25 th. This was most unexpected and a lovely surprise! Many, many thanks and blessings to you all, With deepest gratitude and love, Amanda Whiffen CHRISTMAS CARDS Beautiful religious Christmas cards on sale now at Book Stall. Great value. Limited supply.
