2 MARONITE MINUTE Fifth Week of the Resurrection May 3, 2015 BEING CHRISTIAN IS NOT ABOUT APPEARANCE, IT IS NOT MAKE-UP FOR THE SOUL. IT IS SERVICE At St. Martha s House the Pope said faithful have a history which is one of grace but also of sin ; their identity, however, is not selfishness, it is serving, as Jesus did Domenico Agasso jr Vatican city Faith is history which is composed of sin and grace. We are constantly called to choose between serving ourselves and serving others. Pope Francis made this point during this morning s mass in St. Martha s House. In his homily, which Vatican Radio provides a summary of, the Pope focused on history and service, the two traits of Christian identity. Beginning with history, Pope Francis said Saint Paul, Saint Peter, and the other disciples did not proclaim a Jesus without a history: They proclaimed Jesus in the history of the people, a people God led through the centuries in order to arrive at the fullness of time, at maturity and wisdom that is. The Lord does not remain outside history, but becomes part of it and walks alongside His people: The Christian is a man or woman of history, because he does not pertain to himself alone he is inserted into a people, a people that is on a journey. One cannot imagine a Christian selfishness, no, this won t fly. The Christian is not a spiritual man or woman in a laboratory, [the Christian] is a spiritual man or woman inserted into a people, which has a long history and which continues to journey until the Lord returns. The history of Christians is a history of grace, but also a history of sin. So many sinners, so many crimes! Today, Paul mentions King David, a saint but before he became a saint, he was a great sinner. A great sinner. Our history must take up both saints and sinners. My own personal history, the history of each one of us, must take up our sin, our own proper sin, and the grace of the Lord that is with us, accompanying us in our sin in order to forgive and accompanying us in grace. There is no Christian identity without history. Hence we have a choice: to serve ourselves or to serve others. Jesus washes the feet of the disciples, inviting them to do as He has done: to serve: Christian identity is service, not selfishness. But Father, we are all selfish. Ah, really? It is a sin, a habit we have to break away from. Ask for forgiveness, that the Lord will convert us. We are called to service. Being Christian is not about appearance, or even about social conduct, it s not a little make-up for the soul, because it should be a little more beautiful. To be Christian is to do what Jesus did: serve! Finally, Pope Francis called us to ask ourselves: In my heart, what more can I do? Do I have other people serve me, do I use others, the community, the parish, my family, my friends? Or do I serve, am I at the service of others? 2

Adoration will resume at 6:00 PM and will conclude with the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Please note the Blessed Sacrament CANNOT be left exposed and alone, therefore, a signup sheet is in the church foyer. If the hours are not completely filled, adoration will be cancelled on that Tuesday LUMEN CHRISTI AWARD! Dr. Elias Ayoub, from the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon of Los Angeles, has been nominated for Catholic Extension s 2015 Lumen Christi Award! The Lumen Christi award is presented to a woman religious, priest, lay person or group whose service spreads the light of Christ and transforms lives in their community and beyond. You can help support your nominee by voting for them on the Catholic Extension Facebook page. HELP NEEDED SUNDAY MAY 10TH Qurbono (Liturgy) 11:00 AM ONLY ST. GEORGE 90TH ANNIVERSARY Please join us on May 10th to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of our parish with Bishop Elias Zaidan. Pontifical Divine Liturgy at 11:00 AM followed by a luncheon in the large hall. During the luncheon we will be honoring all the women of the parish. The cost is $5.00 per adult and children 12 years and older. Note that there will be no 8:00 AM Liturgy on Sunday May 10. On Wednesday May 6th at 9:00 am, we will have the church cleaning. Everyone is invited to come out to help. Folklife Festival is approaching; the dates this year are June 13 and 14. Volunteers are needed. Please contact Fernando Fernandez for more information. GARAGE SALE MYO will be sponsoring a garage sale in June and is asking if you have any donations to please drop them off at the church. The date of the sale is TBD. 6 Miscellaneous LAS CORNER Church Cleaning will be May 6 th at 9 am. Our Mass has been changed to May 17 th. Rosary is at 10:30 and mass at 11 am. Our meeting will be at Randy's Bingo Hall at 1:15 pm. Come and play, but we need a count to reserve the space for us. That happens as you get to know the people but, beyond that, it happens as you find your place to serve the Lord and make a difference in the lives of others. We have many ministries in the church that exist to serve those who attend our church, but they also provide ways in which you can be a part of serving others. These important ministries include: ushers, lectors, altar servers, greeters, choir, and many other ministries. All are invited, young and old, men and women, to be part of our parish team. 7 MARIAN SHRINES IN THE WORLD OUR LADY OF LEBANON, HARISSA, LEBANON About 15 miles north of Beirut, overlooking the bay of Jounieh, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lebanon - Harissa, which was built in 1904 over the hill of Harissa, can be seen from miles. Inside the base of the statue there is a chapel and outside, a spiral staircase leads to the top. Near the white-painted bronze statue, this was made in Lyon - France and brought to Lebanon and installed in On 8 December 1854, the Pope Pius IX had established the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The Catholic World in particular was shaken by this great event which filled every heart with happiness, joy, and tranquility. Fifty years after this event, in 1904, the Church celebrated the fiftieth anniversary for establishing this dogma. The Maronite Patriarch Elias Houayek and the Apostolic Delegate the Archbishop Carlos Duval conferred upon the Lebanese people faith and enthusiasm for honoring our Mother the Virgin Mary. They thought of installing a religious monument that would perpetuate the memory of Confirmation of the Immaculate Conception and praise the love of the Lebanese for Mary throughout the generations. The inauguration was solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday of May 1908, and many devoted people came from different places. The apostolic delegate Frediano Giannini presided the ceremony and blessed the construction of the sanctuary and the statue. Since then, Harissa, one small village, became a very important Christian site. The name of Our Lady of Lebanon has went beyond frontiers and has reached overseas, attracting tourists from different religions and beliefs who come each year to show worship and piety. During the 1970s, a Basilica, designed in the style of a Cedar tree and a Phoenician ship, was built to contain thousands of persons and since 1991, great celebrations start taking place in it. The road of Mary is one of the most important events ever occurred in the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lebanon. An historical event during which the statue of the Virgin Mary visited more than 426 villages and towns, in 1954, the year of St Mary and the one hundred anniversary of the proclamation of the immaculate conception. On the last Sunday of May 1954, the statue of the Virgin Mother of light was blessed in Bkerke, the Maronite Patriarchal See, then transported to Harissa in the middle of prayers. To welcome the statue thousands of people, coming from Lebanon and from abroad, kept coming to Harissa all night long. After a twohour walk, the statue arrived to Harissa where a huge crowd was waiting for, sitting between the Church of Our Lady and the Pope Embassy. Among other churches of various denominations, it is worth mentioning the Byzantine-style, Melkite Catholic basilica of St. Paul, located south of the statue and built between 1948 and The Apostolic Nunciature (Papal Embassy), as well as the residences of four patriarchs of Eastern Catholic Churches, are in the vicinity of Harissa and Our Lady of Lebanon. On May 10, 1997, Pope John Paul II and on September 15, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI visited the shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in Harissa during their apostolic visit to Lebanon. 7
