2 MARONITE MINUTE Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2015 Pope Francis: let Jesus gaze change our hearts Pope Francis says each of us should ask Jesus to gaze at us and tell us what we need to do to change our hearts and repent for our sins. We should consider whether Jesus looks at us with a call, with a pardon or with a mission? The Pope s remarks came during his homily at morning Mass on Friday (May 22nd) at the Santa Marta residence. Taking his inspiration from the day s readings, Pope Francis homily was a reflection on the three different types of looks which Jesus gave to the Apostle Peter. He said these three different looks were one of choosing, one of forgiveness and one of mission. The Pope recalled how according to the gospel reading the apostle Andrew told his brother Peter that they had found the Messiah and took him to see Jesus. Christ looked at him and said You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Peter (Cephas) which means Rock. He said Peter was enthusiastic after that first look from Jesus and wanted to follow our Lord. Moving ahead to the night before Jesus crucifixion, Pope Francis recalled how Peter disowned him three times and when Jesus turned and looked straight at him after that third denial, Peter wept. The gospel of Luke says: He wept bitterly. That earlier enthusiasm about following Jesus had turned to grief, because he had sinned: He denied that he knew Jesus.That look (by Jesus) changed Peter s heart, more than before. The first change was being given a new name and a new vocation. That second look was a gaze that changed his heart and it s a change of conversion to love. The Pope said the third look that Jesus gave Peter was one of mission when he asked three times for a confirmation that Peter loved him and urged him to feed his sheep. He noted how the gospel recounts that Peter was hurt when Jesus asked him that question a third time. Hurt because Jesus asked him for the third time Do you love me? and he said: 'Lord, You know everything: You know I love you.' Jesus replied: Feed my sheep. This was the third look, a look of mission. The first, a look of choosing, with the enthusiasm of following Jesus: the second, a look of repentance at the time of that very grave sin of having disowned Jesus: the three look is one of mission: Feed my lambs, Look after my sheep, Feed my sheep. Pope Francis urged his listeners to re-read that dialogue with the Lord and think about Jesus gaze on us. We too can reflect: what look is Jesus giving me today? How is Jesus looking at me? With a call? With a pardon? With a mission? But on the path He created, all of us are being looked at by Jesus. He always looks at us with love. He asks us something, he forgives us for something and he gives us a mission. Jesus is now coming on the altar. May each one of us think: Lord, You are here, among us. Fix your gaze on me and tell me what I must do: how I must repent for my mistakes, my sins; what courage do I need to go forward on the path that You first created. 2

5 SUNDAY MAY 24TH Qurbono (Liturgy) 8:00 AM & 11:00 AM Rosary at 10:40 AM TUESDAY MAY 26TH Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM followed by the Qurbono (Divine Liturgy) at 5:30 PM. Adoration will resume at 6:00 PM and will conclude with the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Please note the Blessed Sacrament CANNOT be left exposed and alone, therefore, a signup sheet is in the church foyer. If the hours are not completely filled, adoration will be cancelled on that Tuesday. SUNDAY MAY 30TH Qurbono (Liturgy) 8:00 AM & 11:00 AM Rosary at 10:40 AM GARAGE SALE The MYO will be sponsoring a garage sale on June 20th and are asking if you have any donations to please drop them off at the church. The deadline for dropping off donations is June 15th. If you have any questions, please call the church office. ORDER OF ST. SHARBEL The Order of St. Sharbel provides support to the Maronite Seminary in the United States by granting financial assistance to the education of our seminarians and, whenever possible, retirement benefits to our clergy. You can make a difference in the life of the Maronite Church. If you would like to become a member, contact the church office. Community Life BACCALAUREATE LITURGY ALL graduates (High School, Undergraduate, Masters, Postgraduate, and Professional) are invited to attend the Baccalaureate Liturgy on June 28 th at 11:00 AM. If you are about to graduate or will graduate by August 2015, please call the Church office or annette@stgeorgesa.org and give us your name so your achievement can be recognized. Please submit the information by Monday, June 22nd. SAVE THE DATE You are invited to a special travel presentation on September 10, 2015 at 6:30 PM. The presentation will talk about a 10 day Pilgrimage to Fatima & Lourdes with Barcelona to take place April 16-25, Barcelona, La Sagrada Familia, Carcassone, Lourdes, Grotto of Massabielle are some of the highlights of the trip. Please RSVP to the church office if you are interested in attending the presentation. Fliers with information about the trip are available in the church foyer, please feel free to take one. CASINO NIGHT The St. George Ladies Altar Society will be sponsoring a Casino Night on June 20th. The tickets will be on sale after 5:00pm and 11:00am masses. Everyone is invited. Please invite your friends and family for a night of fun! HELP NEEDED Folklife Festival is approaching; the dates this year are June 13 and 14. Volunteers are needed. Lord, send forth your Holy Spirit to bring consolation and strength to persecuted Christians. #free2pray Unity in church, families is a grace to request from God, pope says VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Sowing division in the church and in families is one of the devil's favorite things and it goes directly against Jesus' will for all his followers, Pope Francis said. Jesus prays "for the unity of his people," but he knows that "the spirit of the world" is a "spirit of division, war, envy, jealousy, including in families, in religious communities and in dioceses and the whole church; it's a great temptation," the pope said May 21 during his early morning Mass. In his homily at the Mass in the Domus Sanctae Marthae, Pope Francis said the devil's main weapons for sowing division are gossiping and labeling others. "Each person is how he or she is, but try to live in unity," the pope said. "Has Jesus forgiven you? Forgive all others." The Gospel for the day, John 17:20-26, contains Jesus' farewell prayer for his disciples, including his prayer that his followers would be one. There is no such thing as a church held together with "glue," the pope said. Rather, unity is "a grace from God" and the result of a "struggle" on earth. "We must give the Spirit space to transform us into one, like the Father and the Son are one." This is a challenge for all Christians: to not allow room for division among us, to not let the spirit of division, the father of lies, enter into us," he said. "Always seek unity." 6
