On this day, those who are of age fast from food and abstain from meat. Those who attend Mass receive ashes on their foreheads as a sign of our need for repentance. From this day until Easter, the Gloria and the Alleluia are no longer sung at Mass. The presider wears the somber color of purple. And the flowers are removed from the sanctuary as the church takes on a stark, almost barren, appearance. During this season, the Church takes this time to prepare for the great celebration of the Paschal Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter through the three great disciplines of praying, fasting, and almsgiving. Praying to bring us closer to the Lord, who is constantly calling us to Himself; fasting to reinforce our reliance upon God for even our basic needs; and, almsgiving to show our love for God in our love for others who are in need. Through these practices, we seek to renew our commitment to God and the Church and cleanse from our lives that which can distract us. Additionally, seeking the Lord s forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and His presence in the Eucharist can only enhance our Lenten preparations. To give those who wish to come to the Sacraments every opportunity to attend, we will be bringing back the Wednesday evening Mass and offering the opportunity for Reconciliation before every evening Mass. We will also gather for Night Prayer (Compline) on Sunday evenings. Or why not consider being part of the Father Byrider 40 Hour Club and attend daily Mass during Lent? It is our hope that everyone will take advantage of the additional opportunities for prayer to help us truly prepare for the celebration of the Lord s suffering, death, and resurrection. (A full Lenten schedule is included in this bulletin). Christus vincit, Fr. Louis Thomas
2 In May of 1948, Fr. Diederich came to the Portage Lakes with a mission from Bishop Hoban. He was asked to start a vibrant parish community under the patronage of Saint Francis de Sales that would serve the faithful south of Warner Road and Robinson Avenue and west of Massillon Road. He then proceeded to build that dream with his own two hands. Legends speak that a founding family first encountered Fr. Diederich as he was digging the foundation of the church-school himself. It was that down-to-earth, do-what-needs-to-be-done attitude and quiet leadership style, that endeared him to the families he would serve for the next 26 years. Fr. Schleicher was thrilled to be given the reins to shepherd the people for the next 34 years until his retirement in Then finally, I was given the joy to continue the privilege to be the third pastor of this awesome parish. This May 27 th we begin the celebration of the beginning of our 70 th Jubilee year as a parish. We give thanks to Almighty God for every grace and blessing He has bestowed upon us. During these past 68 years we have seen not only three pastors, but a faithful people who have worked to build and sustain this parish throughout these ever-changing times. We remember the building of our temporary original Church (which is now the library on the third floor of the school), the building of the first Church (where the gym is), and the formation of the current Church (cornerstone 1974). Through the years we have become stronger in faith and devotion to the Sacramental life through so many who grew up here, moved here, or came here from Saints Cyril and Methodius and Saint George following their closure. I firmly believe that it is the dedication of all the people of Saint Francis de Sales Parish, no matter from where they come, that makes this place filled with the Spirit. While we thank God for our past, we must also look toward the future. Providing for the spiritual needs of the people takes a tremendous amount of time and commitment from all of us. We are grateful for everyone who gives of their time, talent, and treasure to make Saint Francis de Sales Parish live out St. Francis' motto: be who you are and be that perfectly well. In addition to the commitment of so many, there has also been a financial commitment by you to help us with our monthly commitments and secure our ministerial future. In thanksgiving for this coming 70 th year, plans are being made to provide a permanent structure for the church bell we received from Saint George Church following their closing. It is a fitting way to celebrate our Jubilee Year! To help us fund this project, the VanDevere family and the VanDevere Chevrolet Thrive and Drive program has offered us a chance to raise those funds by generously donating to our parish a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. Raffle tickets will immediately be available at the parish office, at the school office, and at parish events from now until the drawing on Saturday, May 27, May God continue to bless us as we ask for His grace to live out the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Pax, Fr. Bline

6 complete and return to your teacher or the rectory by February 27, 2017 Altar Server Registration Form The Altar Server Ministry is a unique one in the Catholic Church. The Altar Server fulfills a very important role at Mass. When you serve the priests and deacons, you serve the people of God, and above all, you serve Christ our Savior. Young people from high school to the 5 th grade are invited to serve in the Altar Server Ministry at St. Francis de Sales. Please Print: Last Name First Name Address City Zip Code Telephone School Grade I would like to commit to serving in the Altar Server Ministry at St. Francis de Sales Parish. I accept the responsibilities of this position and will do my best to honor Our Lord at Mass, and to assist at the altar prayerfully, with reverence and respect. Student Signature We give permission for our child to serve in the Altar Server Ministry at St. Francis de Sales Parish and we will assist our child to make certain that they meet the schedule requirements and support them in this ministry of service. Parent/ Guardian Signature Serving at the altar is a privileged way to draw closer to Jesus, which in turn enables you to open yourselves to others, to journey together, to set demanding goals and to find the strength to achieve them. The closer you are to the altar, the more you will remember to speak with Jesus in daily prayer; the more you will be nourished by the word and the body of the Lord, the better able you will be to go out to others, bringing them the gift that you have received, giving in turn with enthusiasm the joy you have received.
