1 C The Roman Catholic Churches of St. Augustine & Holy Name of Mary July 30, 2017 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Get into the Word of God this week! 4 Dear parishioners, Pastoral care is an important ministry in our parishes. But often-times people aren t sure how to ask for pastoral care. Please assist us in spreading this information about how to access pastoral care for a friend or family member. It takes a parish to minister to those in need. If you know of someone who is in need of pastoral care, please contact the parish office so that we may respond. Many blessings to all those who help in caring for others in the name of Jesus. Peace and all blessings, Fr. Bill Celebration of Viaticum The celebration of the Eucharist as Viaticum, food for the passage through death to eternal life, is the sacrament proper to the dying Christian. It is the completion and crown of the Christian life on this earth, signifying that the Christian follows the Lord to eternal glory and the banquet of the heavenly kingdom. The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick should be celebrated at the beginning of a serious illness. Viaticum, celebrated when death is close, will then be better understood as the last sacrament of Christian life. Priests and other ministers entrusted with the spiritual care of the sick should do everything they can to ensure that those in proximate danger of death receive the Body and Blood of Christ as Viaticum. At the earliest opportunity, the necessary preparation should be given to the dying person, family, and others who may take part. 1. Viaticum within Mass: may take place in the limited circumstances of the home, a hospital, or other institution. Family members and friends are encouraged to work with the priest to schedule this celebration in a timely manner. 2. Viaticum outside Mass: may take place due to space limitations that prohibit the celebration of the liturgy or due to the very emergency which makes death imminent. In this case a priest, deacon, or another minister may administer the rite for the dying person. It often happens that a person who has received the Eucharist as Viaticum lingers in a grave condition for a period of days or longer. In these circumstances he or she may receive the Eucharist as Viaticum on successive days, frequently or even daily. Visits to the Sick Parish ministers visiting the sick share the prayers of the church and read the word of God. At the request of the individual or through family members, trained parish volunteers visit the sick and the bereaved in hospitals, nursing homes, and in their homes. Contact your home parish for further information or to receive a visit. Communion of the Sick When the sick are prevented from celebrating the Eucharist with the rest of the community at Mass, it is of utmost importance for them to receive Holy Communion. Communion Ministers assist the priests and deacons in bringing Holy Communion to Catholics who are in the hospital, area nursing homes, and who are homebound. 1. At the hospital or nursing home: indicate to the facility that you are Catholic and that you would like a minister to bring Holy Communion. Contact your home parish so that your pastor may be notified regarding your location and your condition. 2. At home or another care facility: Call your home parish to indicate that you or your loved one would like to receive Holy Communion. The parish depends upon notification in order to schedule a regular visit. Communion Ministers bring Holy Communion to the sick on a weekly basis in homes and nursing facilities and several times per week at the hospital. The priests bring Holy Communion to the sick on a regular basis. Due to the number of sick and shut-ins for whom the parish priest is responsible, individual visits are periodic. Anointing of the Sick Those whose health has been seriously impaired by illness or old age may receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This sacrament is offered by the Priests of the area parishes upon request and at periodic anointing liturgies. 1. Before a surgery: speak to your parish priest. The Anointing of the Sick is easily done before or after a Sunday Mass or a weekday Mass. Priests are always happy to share this sacrament with a person prior to entering a hospital for a surgery or procedure. 2. At the Hospital or Nursing Home: indicate to the facility that you are Catholic and would like to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick if you have not had the opportunity to do so prior to admittance. The staff will assist you in contacting your parish to schedule a visit by the priest. 3. At home or another facility: Call your home parish to indicate that you or your loved one would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick so that a visit may be scheduled. The priest often shares this sacrament along with the periodic visit for Holy Communion.
