1 All Saints Episcopal Church NEWSLETTER VOLUME 16 NUMBER 1 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2012 FROM THE RECTOR: LENT IS COMING Lent is coming But before we get that far.. It seems like it has been a long time since our last newsletter because so much has happened. We have had Christmas in all of its glory. Thanks to all who made our celebration of Jesus birth so meaningful. We had, as usual, a really terrific pageant and Christmas Eve worship. The music was great. Thanks Carol and thanks to all who worked to make yet another Christmas so memorable. We also had our, dare I say, second annual concert given by the Hanover Barbershop Chorus followed by a spaghetti dinner. It was a really enjoyable night for everyone. Thanks to everybody who worked to make it so, especially Dick Davis and Frank Terhune whose melodious voices just thrilled us all! As the title states, Lent is soon around the corner beginning On Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22. We will worship at 7:30AM, 12:15PM and at 7:00PM. Wednesday in Lent we will worship with the Lutherans as we have been for the last few years. (See the schedule below). THE BISHOP IS ALSO COMING!! QUIET DAY MARCH 24, 2012 On Sunday March 4th our Bishop, Nathan Baxter will be here to celebrate with us and to confirm six of our children. This is a big day for us so PLEASE make every effort to be there. We will also have our chapel blessed. The last time Nathan+ was here, it was not finished. Of course we will have a reception to follow. - Fr. Doug All Saint's Chapter of the Daughters of the King is once again hosting a Quiet Day for our parish during Lent. This is a time to step back from the busyness of our everyday lives for a morning of listening, meditation, reflection, and fellowship. Our leader and facilitator for the morning will be Debra Barton, a licensed Spiritual Director. She has been leading seminars, retreats, etc. for over 15 years and is Director of the Center for Spiritual Development in Monkton, MD. You will really enjoy being with her, listening to here & having her guide you into a closer relationship with God. The schedule is as follows: 9:00-9:30: Gathering and Coffee 9:30-11:30: Meditations and Reflection 11:30: Eucharist 12:00: A lunch featuring soups and breads Please make plans to attend and to even bring a friend for a very worthwhile and meaningful morning, followed by lunch. A sign-up sheet is in the church vestibule. Thank you very much! Sarah Terhune ALL SAINTS EPISCOPAL CHURCH 890 McCosh St. Hanover, PA office allsaintshanover@gmail.com Rev. 2 PAGE 2 ALL SAINTS EPISCOPAL CHURCH FATHER DOUG IS OFF TO ISRAEL! On Monday, February 6th I will be flying to Tel Aviv for a 10 day pilgrimage to Israel. I will return on February 16th. I cannot possibly thank Sonja and David Alcon enough for sponsoring me through the Knights Templar of Pennsylvania. I will be representing my denomination and my adopted state on this journey and will be more than happy to tell every body about it when I return. Our group (there are 40 of us from across the whole USA) will visit lots of places, among them are, Joppa, Mt. Carmel, Megiddo, Capernaum, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Masada, The Dead Sea, Qumran (the place of the Dead Sea Scrolls), and of course Jerusalem. It is advertized as an immersion experience and we will be moving quickly. Obviously we will visit these places and we will also have lectures about them and why these places are significant beyond the obvious reasons. I will take many, many, many pictures (the wonder of technology and memory cars will allow me to take 5,000 pictures!) and I will bring back as much of this experience as I can. Pray for a safe journey. Father Doug WHAT IS A LAY MINISTRIES FAIR? Lay Ministry Fair -- Feb 19, between services and after the 10 AM service. What is it? Lay or layman refers to those of us who aren t ordained as is a deacon or priest -- in short, the whole congregation. Ministry, means at it s most basic, to minister to or serve others. That s what we all agreed to do in our baptismal covenant and confirmation. How do we do that? It depends on what gifts God has given us as individuals. Some of us sing, some of us volunteer in a soup kitchen, some of us serve on the Altar, some are good at organizing, and others are good at teaching. A lay Ministry Fair gives us the opportunity to learn about the various ministries that are already part of All Saints. Members of each ministry will be on hand to answer questions, pass out information, and give you a better idea of what, for example, the Altar Guild or the Property committee really does. The fair will also give you an opportunity to see where your skills are needed and to maybe start, continue, change, or expand your own ministry. Come check us out! By most people this is seen as a time to seek prayer when something terrible has happened to you or to someone you know. Of course this is true, but healing in the church is not only about curing a disease, of course this does happen also. Healing is a many Splendored thing. There is no person walking around who is not in need of some form of healing. We all have our issues and healing is intended to put us in a right relationship with ourselves and with God so that we are freed from those things that bind us. The changes that take place in us are not always conscious and we think a powerful force that, over time, moves us to that right relationship. It sets us free. It is at the heart of the promises of the gospel and we see more clearly and we hear more clearly as the Holy Spirit works on us. This is truly a wonderful experience and it is right here for everybody. It is not a one shot deal, but something that we really immerse ourselves in and experience as often as we can. So, as Jesus said, Come to me all you who are heavy laden and I will give you rest. and don t worry about what someone else is thinking, it is God that we are concerned with! Fr. Doug
