2 From the Pastor s Desk... Dear Friends, Most of you know that the call committee elected by church council included three women and three men. They are: Connie Hoover, Kelly Rummel, Suzanne Beckstoffer, John Savage, Bill Solomon and Mark Madler. As they begin their tasks, please keep them in your prayers. The Assistant to the Bishop who will guide this process is Pastor Chris Price. Depending on when this issue of Tidings reaches you, he will have been here on Feb. 28 to meet with both call committee and congregation as this journey begins. Please know that via computer, you may go to Virginia Synod.org click resources tab, then the menu for congregations and see the tab call process and procedures. This is the handbook to be used by the call committee and outlines all procedures and should answer many questions about our synod process. Again, prayers for their important work as they move into this journey with faith, hope and vision! Holy Week is early this year: please keep these dates in mind: Palm Sunday: March 20, Maundy Thursday: March 24, worship at 7:00 PM, Good Friday: March 25, worship at 7:00 PM. Other special dates to come: Pentecost Festival and Confirmation (11:00 AM) on May 15, reception at 9:45. May 22, 9:45, Trinity Troupers present the musical: Sailor s Bible. Worship is our special time as Christians to refresh, renew and replenish our lives through the grace of Word and Sacrament. May these special opportunities for worship call you together for the family of faith gathering at these special times. Blessings to you, Pastor Jim Cobb The following prayer was given at the February 23 Newport News city council meeting: O God, we pray for this governing body that they might have wise discernment in the decisions they make for the good of all and the up-building of community. Give them energy and strength for the hours necessary for conversations, reading, research and reflections in consideration of the issues before them. Give them appreciation for dedicated department staffs and helpers who serve the citizens of this city and region. Give these council members time to enjoy each other with laughter and friendships that last beyond terms of office. Tonight, we pray especially for... persons among us: those in need of food, shelter, health-care and peace, in mind and body; our industry and commerce: that products and labors be productive for the people in this community and for all the world; our schools dedicated to a love of learning and the dignity and worth of each person: bless teachers, students, staff and families entrusted with this vital formation of body, mind and spirit. our police and first responders: grant them protection in their work of helping, healing and peacekeeping. And always O God, give this elected body a sense of stewardship for the common good of all and help them to always know what is right and good and grant them the will and courage to do it. We entrust our prayers to you O God, offering them in your holy name. Amen. 2
3 Wednesday s in Lent Please join fellow congregation members for an evening of fellowship, dinner, and a special program centered on the call process for a new pastor. The topics for the remaining Wednesday s are listed below. Dinner will begin at 6:00 PM in the social hall andwill consist of soup and salad served by the church committees. The program will start at 6:45 PM and finish at 7:25 PM with a prayer and blessing. The specific topics for each Wednesday are as follows: Mar 2 Mar 9 Mar 16 Congregational Types (insights into mission and maintenance models) Survey 2 Findings (survey composites about leadership needs) Envisioning the Future (a vision café format) Youth Group members will meet in the Youth Room on Sunday, March 27th at 9:30 AM to hide the Easter Eggs for our littlest members of the congregation. Make sure that you bring comfortable shoes to walk in on those rocks in the playground area. As we have learned over the last few years, heels won t work! See you then! The Youth Group invites all our littlest Lutherans (age birth 4th grade) to the annual Easter Egg Hunt which will take place at 10 AM on Easter Sunday, March 27th. Meet in the gym a few minutes before 10 AM to get instructions on the hunt. Remember to bring your Easter basket in order to collect the eggs. Kelly, Erik, Kathy Easter Egg Hunt World Thinking Day Trinity Troop 4170 (the junior and cadette troop at Trinity) held a World Thinking Day event in February with and about twenty Daisies from the service unit including the Daisy Troop at Trinity attended. The girls did a focus on Asia and the Oceanic and created display boards for Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand and India. We also did Aboriginal Dot Painting from Australia and celebrated with food from each of the countries and a World Thinking Day cake. Michelle Carpenter 3
4 Vacation Bible School The Hilton area churches will once join forces to present the 2016 Vacation Bible School from July 11th through the 15th. VBS will be hosted by Hilton Presbyterian and St. Andrew s Episcopal Churches. The website is already up and running taking reservations for both children and volunteers. Everyone is encouraged to begin the registration process and to spread the word to other family members and friends. While not listed on the website there is a $5 fee per child to cover the cost of materials. Register at: Pickup Basketball The men s pickup basketball league plays on Wednesday evenings in the TLS gymnasium from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM and will continue every Wednesday evening through the end of March. This is a great opportunity to bring church, school and school parents together for a fun and healthy event. Join us any Wednesday night. Thank you to all who have brought in supplies for our coffee bar in the church library. However, we have a storage problem. We have too many coffee stirrers, sweetening packets and coffee cup lids perhaps a supply for several years. If you want to help the Witness Committee keep this gathering place supplied, bring in some treats to share during the Sunday school hour. Carretta Behrmann is coordinating this effort. Give Carretta a call at to let her know when you plan to bring in cookies, donuts, etc. or just bring in your donations. Can we ever have too many donuts? If we do have too many treats, note that they will not be saved. Again, it s a storage problem. You will help us by taking any leftovers home. Judy Hunt Witness Report The Nursery is looking for additional care givers for the Sunday services. If you love caring for young children please contact Charlotte Duff at Thanks for helping! Tidings Inputs Do you have something you would like to see published in the Tidings? You can submit an article by the 15th of the month or contact the Office Administrator to offer suggestions. Based on space available we will work to get your input request into the newsletter. All calendar inputs are welcome as well. Submissions can be sent to the editor at cliffordobara@cox.net. 8
5 Property Report The Property Committee met on February 2nd. Here is an update on our current projects: Social Hall: No new updates on the floor other than estimates have been received and the cost is higher than the funds currently available. Look for more details as summer approaches. The work day for painting the walls was cancelled due to a conflict. It will be rescheduled soon. Sunday School Room: The divider bracket that attaches to the wall has come loose. Pete Johnston and Earl Dunn have fixed the wall anchors and screws that hold it in place. Earl Dunn is working on replacing the cracked window. The toilet backed up and was fixed. Please be careful not to throw the wrong items in the toilets. We have had a several backups recently which puts at risk the floors and other parts of the Church. The members of the property committee are Jack Kowalski, Diane Roselius, Pete Johnston, Joan Johnston, Kevin Goetz (TLS) and Earl Dunn (TLS).
