From the Rector Picture This: How do you see yourself living in the November 2014 The Season after Pentecost Kingdom of heaven, in the company of the saints of God? Take a moment, please, and picture in your mind s eye what you imagine you can see in mission and ministry in worship and in care three years from now at Saint Paul s Church. We are blessed by God in order that we be a blessing to others. As we approach All Saints Sunday and celebrate baptism, Eucharist and sing God s praises, we rejoice that our Risen Lord Jesus is in our midst. We remember the saints who have gone before us and we journey onward with those being born into the life of faith. On November 2 and 9 we meet those who stand for election to your Vestry at Annual Meeting on Tuesday evening, November 11. We are grateful to them. November 2 is the last Sunday to participate in the ME25 Survey of this great congregation. Don t let yourself be left behind. We need your voice. On November 9 and November 11 and beyond you will see a plan to begin to emerge to strengthen our ministries in the coming months and years. You won t want to miss this year s Annual Meeting. We know already that this mission and ministry plan includes initiatives in pastoral care as well as education and spiritual formation. Our new Living Compass ministries will call individuals, families and ministry groups to wholeness and health. New opportunities are being shaped for us to worship together, to welcome all who come, to be inspired and informed together, and to care for each other so we may care for those to whom we are sent. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled, Jesus tells us. We are blessed in order to be a blessing to others. How are we blessed? With a holy worship space, and four support buildings. With a congregation and staff team that is faithful and forward-looking. We are blessed to be among the strongest Episcopal congregations in the country. [Of all the 140 members of the national Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes, St. Paul s is among the top 20 in terms of the value of our endowment funds, which have rebounded from $7 million in 2008 to about $9.5 million today.] God expects that we will steward these great blessings for ministry indeed, that we will be good and faithful stewards of all the riches of God s grace including the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Coupled with the stewardship of resources built over the years here, each of us is called to share our blessings. We ask ourselves, What talents has God given me for ministry? How can I give of my time to serve others, and to lead in the church? What percentage of my income does God ask me to return to his ministries in and from this holy, nurturing place? Here s a bit of a parable you will hear soon on a Sunday: The kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. I believe God has given us lamps filled with oil. Each of us already has a lamp within us with which we can enlighten the world. At St. Paul s, this congregational lamp is fueled by our endowments. Note also in the story that the wise bridesmaids awaiting their entrance into the kingdom of heaven brought something else to offer: each brought flasks of oil with their lamps. This month is the month to bring your flask of oil, and to offer it in faith and in gratitude at Christ s altar. Each Sunday this month we are invited to that table, and each Sunday we are invited to give ourselves to our Lord in shared ministry among the saints of God. Bring your lamp. Be awake, Jesus says. Be expectant and hopeful and ready to be blessed! Bring your oil, bring your self, on November 16 bring your pledge card, which is your covenant with God that you will offer your energy, your faith, and your resources to the growing ministries into which we are called by the Spirit in Share the blessings, and they grow! Faithfully, Donald The Newsletter of Saint Paul s Episcopal Church in the City of Chattanooga and The Diocese of East Tennessee

MINISTRY HERE AND BEYOND THE WALLS Vestry Highlights At its regular meeting October 27 your Vestry accepted the report of the Nominating Committee in preparation for the Annual Meeting of the parish. Senior Churchwarden Hank Hopping reported on a good meeting with the strong Outreach Committee and on its ministries both hands-on and grant-making. He praised their work. Vestry authorized creation of a Discernment Committee for parishioner and aspirant for Holy Orders Zachary Outlaw, and Vestry authorized signature authority for Associate Rector Leigh Preston on a Parish Discretionary Fund for those in need. Staff and the office of Chancellor Hugh Sharber are negotiating with a local bank to lease 45 additional weekday spaces in our parking lots. The Treasurer reported that at the end of the third quarter of the year spending is within budget at 74.46%. Giving and other revenues were at 69%. Vestry invites parishioners to be faithful in giving for the balance of the year the last two months of the year are typically strong months in giving to the Mission and Ministry Budget of the Church. This is needful in this year of growth. The Rector hosts a Diocesan event here December 11 for all clergy new to positions in the Diocese, and other clergy and lay leaders including our Vestry and parishioners. He teaches on Gallup Faith Practice Strengths, ME25, Living Compass Ministries, Appreciative Ministry, Mutual Ministry Reviews, and the demonstrated value of clergy networks and clergy mentor relationships. Pastoral Care Minister Janet Hale gave a great and well-received report on strengthening the ministries of a growing number of lay people, to join Janet and the clergy in a constellation of pastoral care ministries. She is working closely with Associate Rector for Pastoral Care, Christian Education and Spiritual Formation Leigh Preston. Janet will report at Annual Meeting. Leigh Preston filed a report that will be published with the Annual Reports in early November, highlighting upcoming education offerings in 2015 and her pastoral ministries. She can be reached at preston@stpaulschatt.org Associate Rector Quinn Parman reported on progress toward calling an interim Children s Ministries Coordinator, as well as on his pastoral work with Lee Moore and the Guild of the Christ Child, and with Adam Webb on Youth Ministry. Quinn is also meeting with parents of youth, Young Adults, Men of the Church, and more. He is working on a scope and sequence plan for children s and youth ministries in the future. All persons interested in baptism and all parents interested in discussing baptism for a child now begin those conversations with Quinn: parman@stpaulschatt.org Deacon for Outreach Ann G. Weeks was thanked by the Rector and Vestry for her vital ministries and her report. Stewardship Team Co-Leader Lynn Hodge reported on the launch of the November Annual Giving ministries in support of our 2015 mission and ministry. Vestry members are impressed by Sunday mini-speeches by members of the congregation. Our shared ministries are heavily dependent on annual pledges of financial support. The Rector reported on the October 29 GreenFaith major event here for the community and gave thanks for parishioner Bruce Blohm s leadership in our GreenFaith ministries for all ages. 4 Faith in Action Vestry Highlights...Continued from page 3 The Rector also shared news of a gift to the church in loving memory of Charlotte Haymore Clark and William F. Clark by Deborah Seward Roberts Bonner and The Very Rev. John H. Bonner III. More news of that gift will be published at the Annual Meeting and beyond. The named fund will begin to benefit the Thorne Sparkman School of Religion here in 2016 and beyond. (There has never before been a fund in perpetuity to benefit the Lenten school, celebrating its 42nd year in 2015.) Donald also reported on the Gallup ME25 survey of the congregation (ongoing through the first Sunday in November) and Living Compass, strong membership and important ministries in the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes, and other ministries here through which the Spirit is obviously working. Vestry meets again in Special Session Thursday, November 13 as well as Monday, November 17 and Monday, December 15. Diocesan Convention Delegates will be elected November Don t Miss Your Last Chance to Participate in our ME25 Member Engagement Survey! Monday, November 3 is your last chance to participate in our ME25 Member Engagement Survey! All parishioners 18 and over are invited to take this survey that will give us a collective view of the spiritual health of our congregation. We will use the results to identify specific actions we can take to further meet the spiritual needs of our members. All responses are confidential, and the survey only takes about five minutes to complete. Responding to the survey online saves your Church time and money. Go to my.gallupfaith.com/stpauls_37402 and enter our access code: CF Paper copies of the survey may be found in the October Chimes or at the Church (remember to complete both sides of the paper survey). All paper and online surveys must be submitted by Monday, November 3. Your opinion is important to this parish, don t miss your opportunity to have your voice be heard! St. Paul s New Financial Coaching Ministry Are Money Worries Weighing You Down? Turn Concerns into Confidence with a Financial Coach! Many people want to improve their financial well-being but need motivation and support from someone who knows the ropes and someone who can help them become more confident with their financial position. Your Financial Coach can help you: Set goals and take action Navigate your concerns related to spending, budgeting, and saving Develop and maintain healthy financial behaviors You will have a confidential, trusting relationship with a volunteer Financial Coach who has received training from Thrivent Financial. They are compassionate about sharing their financial knowledge and helping people make wise decisions about money. Financial Coaching is a one-on-one, non-judgmental relationship that provides encouragement, guidance and helpful resources in setting your goals and putting them into action. There is no cost for this ministry. Interested in meeting with a volunteer Financial Coach? Contact Gail Winterbauer: (direct line) or winter@stpaulschatt.org. Vestry Nominees By press time on October 28 The Rector and Vestry had not received from the Nominating Committee the required slate of no fewer than 10 qualified nominees for the five Vestry seats that will be vacated in early The names of the slate of no fewer than 10 nominees will be published as soon as possible and each nominee will be invited to be introduced (and speak briefly if he or she desires) on November 2, 9, and 11. MINISTRY HERE AND BEYOND THE WALLS Christmas Sharing 2014 This year for Christmas Sharing, St. Paul s and Metropolitan Ministries are again partnering with the Salvation Army s Angel Tree Program. Please consider adopting one of angels from the tree that will be located in Key-Andrews beginning November 9! We ask that you spend at least $50, including toys as well as clothes for the children. If that is too much, maybe you could join with friends and do it together as part of your Christmas giving. Just watch for the tree and choose an angel or two! Please return your gifts in the bag provided by the Salvation Army by December 2. Be sure to sign in the book indicating the return of your unwrapped gifts. Another important way you can help our clergy and the Outreach Committee in assisting others is by providing shopping gift cards ($25 denomination preferred, VISA or WalMart) to help those in need. The cards will be distributed to those seeking help with items ranging from clothing to fuel and other necessities. We ask you to take a Shopping Card tag from the small tree in Key-Andrews Hall and provide your contact information in the notebook. Please return the gift cards to Key-Andrews Hall on Sundays or to the Church Office by December 21. Pastoral Care Ministry: Update St. Paul s is expanding its pastoral care ministries. With the leadership and support of our clergy, the prayerful decision was made to develop a more effective means of ensuring that parishioners receive the attention and care that they need and deserve, and an improved mechanism for follow up. Of equal importance, the development and implementation of an enhanced pastoral care ministry offers to our laity opportunities to respond to the call of ministry in accordance with our Baptismal vows. In September Pastoral Care Minister Janet Hale and staff member Susan Cardwell participated in a workshop designed to help parishes build on solid foundations more effective pastoral care ministries customized to fit their particular needs. With a newly-formed Pastoral Care Project Team, consisting of our clergy, Janet Hale, Virginia Anne Sharber, Rick Govan, Paul Barnett, Suzanne Barels, Lee Moore, Lois and Eugene Maio, we will be implementing a more organized and effective way of extending pastoral care. Associate Rector Leigh Preston is working closely with us. We are starting on an amazing journey and look forward to sharing this new adventure with you! Please pray that as each of us answers our call to ministry, the parish is stronger and much closer to being everything that the Church was created to be. We hope that these efforts will bring that reality to fruition. Janet Hale, Pastoral Care Minister

Flower Ministers GreenFaith & Pastoral Care in Action Your gifts of flowers to the Glory of God and in thanksgivings and remembrance are recycled in ministry to those in the parish who are in hospitals, care facilities, or are homebound, as well as to the St. Barnabas Chapel. Our dedicated flower ministers Sandy Boyles, Mary Lou Sherrill, Pat Daniel, Carla Sanderlin, Joan and Dan MacKinnon, and Jody Clark deliver small bouquets made with flowers from the altar each Monday. Their visits brighten the days of those who are ill, and are important components of the parish s Pastoral Care Ministry. We offer thanks to God for Jody Clark and her many years of ministry as our Flower Ministry Coordinator! With her help and care Sandy Boyles has begun coordination of Monday deliveries. In December, Ellie Johnson will begin ministry as the coordinator of flower memorials and thanksgivings. If you are interested in making a gift of flowers for the high altar ($125) or St. George s Chapel ($85), please contact Ellie: Eleanor_johnson@comcast.net or (423) From The Associate Rector for Cradle to College Ministries Dear People of St. Paul s Church, I wanted to give you a brief update on my work among you as Associate Rector for Cradle to College Ministries. On the cradle side of things, I have been reworking how we do pastoral care and baptismal formation for families with newborns. Together with Lee Moore, Josh and Krystal Thompson, and others I have mapped out a way to resurrect a ministry that once existed here the Guild of the Christ Child. You will hear more about this important ministry in the coming days. Meanwhile, we are being more intentional about our formation and preparation of families who will have children baptized at St. Paul s Church. I am meeting with each and every family to have a conversation about the centrality of baptism to the life of our community and to answer any questions they might have. We are in the midst of searching for an interim Children s Ministries Coordinator who will share in the good work we are doing with children and families. Our youth ministry is in excellent hands. I am impressed by the commitment and quality of our lay leadership in our work with the youth of this congregation. Adam Webb is wonderful to work with, and he is supported by a host of fantastic leaders. I have enjoyed getting to know the youth of our congregation, particularly at EYC on Sunday nights. On Sunday, October 12, however, I took time away from EYC to have dinner with many parents of youth group members. It was a great time to get to know them, and for them to get some face time with one another. I look forward to continuing these EYC parent dinners on the second Sunday nights of the coming months. As to our ministry with college students and young adults, I have been in contact with the new Project Canterbury Missioner, Mother AJ Buckley. We are, together, thinking about ways our ministries can intersect and feed off of one another. Our Young Adults (YAMs) group has restarted monthly lunches every second Sunday at local restaurants, and many who have attended have expressed interest in a deeper engagement with the outreach ministries of St. Paul s. It is a joy to be among you, ministering to those in our Cradle to College Ministries and to the rest of the congregation through pastoral visits, our monthly Men s Night, an EfM class, participation in the Sunday and daily schedule of preaching and celebrating, and the many other opportunities I have had to share in the life of this wonderful place. God Bless, Quinn YAMs Second Sunday Lunch The Young Adults of the parish will head out to Lupi's Pizza on Sunday, November 9 following the 10:30 Eucharist. Plan to gather in Key-Andrews Hall after the Eucharist and we will carpool to 406 Broad Street for great fellowship and a tasty meal! Men s Night Out Thursday, November 13 at 6:15 p.m. The men of St. Paul s are invited to enjoy food, drink, and time together on the second Thursday of each month. Attitude of Gratitude Celebration Sunday: November 16 In recent weeks we have heard from parishioners telling us why they pledge and why they reach out within the parish and into the community. Pledge cards will be mailed out the first week of November. When you receive your card, we ask your prayers for our parish, in hopes that many households will consider making pledge for the first time, that some increase will increase their pledge if so able and that everyone will find a ministry to become involved in. All are steps to being Members in Good Standing of St. Paul s Church. You are encouraged to return your card as soon as you have made a decision on your 2015 pledge. November 16 will be our Attitude of Gratitude Celebration Sunday and we will again have a prayerful moment during each service to consider our abundance of gratitude. If you have already turned in your pledge card, a special card will be available for you to fill out and bring to the altar recognizing that gift. If you have yet to fill out a pledge card, you may do so then, or bring a completed card with you to present at the altar. Following the 10:30 Eucharist we will have a Celebration Lunch in Key-Andrews Hall. St. Paul s will provide the fried chicken and we hope that you will provide the rest! Parishioners with last names beginning A-H are asked to bring a salad, I-P to bring a side dish and Q-Z a dessert. Let s all take the next steps and see what more we can accomplish with an Attitude of Gratitude.
