2 Welcome to Trinity Church Please add your voice and heart to the worship: sing the hymns and pray the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus Table, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together. Worship Notes for Good Friday The Good Friday liturgy is dense with meaning, and focuses specifically on the cross. The Cross finds its full meaning only in the Resurrection, which is God s ultimate Yes to the No of all human violence and evil. We live even now in the light of that Resurrection, and look back to the Cross as God s open-armed gesture of love to the world.

3 Prelude Welcome Acclamation and Collect God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. The Gathering Rite Loving God, whose Son, our Savior Jesus Christ draws the whole world to himself in one human family: Mercifully grant that we may have grace to see, to hear, and to embrace all people as brothers and sisters in you. You laid down your life in love because you care about how we feel and how we struggle. Open our hearts to love like you. In your name we pray. Amen. Please be seated for the readings Good Friday 4pm Worship with Children, Youth & Families April 3, 2015 The Liturgy of the Word The Holy Gospel Adapted from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John Each week, we read from the part of the Bible that tells the story of Jesus life and teachings. Today, we tell about what happened near the end of his life. Before we begin this story, you should know what a disciple is. A disciple is one of the people who followed Jesus, who is the Son of God. The disciples were Jesus friends and followers. This is a serious and sad story about Jesus. Today, we are going to hear about the end of Jesus life. Jesus and his disciples were traveling from town to town, talking about the love of God, sharing and caring, working together, and being good neighbors. Some of the time Jesus and his disciples traveled together, and at other times they split up. One evening, Jesus called the disciples together for a special dinner. When they all gathered around the table, Jesus broke the bread and passed it around. Then, he thanked the disciples for their service, and he said, This is our last supper. 3

4 Following the reading The table was silent. The disciples stared at Jesus. What do you mean, our last supper? Jesus looked around the table and said, Soon I shall die. The disciples looked at Jesus in disbelief. But why? they asked. Jesus answered, There are people who do not like me. They do not like what I am trying to do. The disciples could not believe what they were hearing. Who wants to hurt you? they asked. How will they do that? Jesus turned, and looked at Judas, one of his disciples, and said, One of you will be the one who will turn me in to my enemies. Judas got up and left the room, and told his enemies where Jesus was. Meanwhile, Jesus went out to the garden with his disciples to pray, because Jesus was scared about what would happen to him. He asked the disciples to stay awake with him, so that he wouldn t be alone, but they fell asleep. Then, suddenly, there was a big noise, and a crowd of people with torches and weapons came looking for Jesus. The crowd took Jesus away, and locked him in jail overnight; all of the disciples were so scared that they ran away. Only the disciple named Peter followed Jesus to the jail, but he tried to hide so that he wouldn t be put in jail too. A woman saw Peter and asked Aren t you that man Jesus friend? And Peter was so afraid that he said No! Peter realized what he had done, and was so ashamed of himself that he ran away. The next morning, soldiers took Jesus from jail, and the ruler, Pontius Pilate, ordered something very cruel he told the soldiers to nail Jesus hands and feet to a wooden cross, and to let him hang there until he died. The soldiers whipped Jesus, and laughed at him, and took Jesus clothes away from him. Finally, just before he died, Jesus looked out at all of the people who had betrayed him, and hurt him, and asked God to forgive them. When Jesus had died, his friends came to take him down from the cross. They cleaned his body, and wrapped it in cloth, and laid his body inside a tomb that was like a cave, with a stone blocking the entrance. But when they came back to visit his tomb three days later, the stone was rolled away, and they wondered where Jesus had gone. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Sometimes it causes me to tremble. Were you there? Reconciliation Ritual Please stand as you are able. We pray for ourselves, for the ones we love, and especially for those who hurt us. We give thanks, and we ask for the things we need and for the needs of others. We say we are sorry, and remember that we are forgiven. We are God s children, blessed and forgiven. Let us now hold our stones to our hearts. The stones help us remember the things we do that hurt those we love or even ourselves. God have mercy. God have mercy. We often hurt those we most love. We often hurt those we most love. We are sorry, God. Please forgive us. We are sorry, God. Please forgive us. We will do more to bring kindness to the world. We will do more to bring kindness to the world. Help us to be as forgiving as Jesus and to love like Jesus. Help us to be as forgiving as Jesus and to love like Jesus. Through the water of our baptism, God forgives us and loves us. As this holy water washes these stones, God washes away our hurts. Know that you are forgiven; be at peace. Amen. 5

We wait in hope for new life in you, O God. We put our trust in you, the One we call, our Savior. We wait in hope for new life in you, O God. The Lord s Prayer And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Dismissal Our prayer has ended. Go in peace.
