The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II, Proper 18 September 4, 2016, 8am St. Paul s Chapel For a World of Good Broadway and Fulton Street, New York City Source of life and blessing, of garden, orchard, field, root us in obedience to you and nourish us by your ever-flowing Spirit, that, perceiving only the good we might do, our lives may be fruitful, our labor productive, and our service useful, in communion with Jesus, our brother. Amen.

The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II, Proper 18 September 4, 2016, 8am Welcome to St. Paul s Chapel Please add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus Table, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together. About this Service From July 31 to September 4, Trinity Church and St. Paul s Chapel are using expansive language for all Sunday liturgies. Expansive language is the term we use for including many images of God in our prayer and worship. The church writes liturgies to be celebrated in public worship to teach us about God and our relationship with God. These liturgies reflect our best understanding of how God is known to us as Christians. God is called Creator, Almighty, and King in worship. In the Bible, God is also said to be like a mother hen, a cypress tree, a pillar of fire or a friend, yet God is not solely any of those things. We worship with the most expansive language we can to invoke the great mystery of God among us. The prayers in this service have been adapted for our use from the following sources: Enriching Our Worship (EOW); Common Worship: Services and Prayers for the Church of England (CW); All Desires Known (ADK) by Janet Morley; and The Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Acclamation The altar party is seated informally. Please stand as you are able when the rises. The Entrance Rite Blessed be God, By whose grace creation is renewed, By whose love heaven is opened, By whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise. Blessed be God for ever. Source: CW p

Collect for Purity All Song of Praise All Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect of the Day All Please be seated. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 3

The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Deuteronomy 30:15-20 A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy. Moses said to all Israel the words which the Lord commanded him, See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Psalm Psalm 139:1-2, Let us read from Psalm 139 in unison. All LORD, you have searched me out and known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting-places * and are acquainted with all my ways. For you yourself created my inmost parts; * you knit me together in my mother s womb. I will thank you because I am marvelously made; * your works are wonderful, and I know it well. My body was not hidden from you, * while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; * they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. How deep I find your thoughts, O God! * how great is the sum of them! If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; * to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. 4

The Second Reading Philemon 1-21 A Reading from Paul s letter to Philemon. Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother. For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced. Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel Luke 14:25-33 Please stand as you are able. Deacon Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus; and he turned and said to them, Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, This fellow began to build and was not able to finish. Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he 5

cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon Silence follows the sermon. The Rev. Elizabeth Blunt The Nicene Creed Please stand as you are able. All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6

The Prayers of the Almighty God, we pray for your holy catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, and the spiritual leaders of this parish; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world, remembering especially all candidates running for public office; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Add your own prayers either silently or aloud. Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth: Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this fellowhip of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Confession and Absolution Deacon All Let us return to the Lord our God, saying: Loving God, you have searched us out and known us, and all that we are is open to you. We confess that we have sinned: we have used our power to dominate and our weakness to manipulate; we have evaded responsibility and failed to confront evil: we have denied dignity to ourselves and to our sisters and brothers, and fallen into despair. We turn to you, O God; we renounce evil; we claim your love; we choose to be made whole. 7

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. Source: ADK p. 59 The Peace The Holy Eucharist The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another in the name of the Lord. Welcome Please be seated. The Offertory An usher collects the offering. At the Presentation Please stand as you are able as the offering is brought forward. The Great Thanksgiving The people gather around the table. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God, through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; you brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing: all you create is a sign of hope for our journey. And so as the morning stars sing your praises, we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy: 8

Sanctus All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all; your Word has never been silent. You called a people to yourself; as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human: to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign, and to give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: Drink this, all of you: this Cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: All Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with the blessed Virgin Mary and all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you, our God and Creator, in voices of unending praise. All All Blessed are you now and for ever. AMEN. And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Source: EOW pp

Concluding Rite The Post-Communion Prayer Please stand as you are able. All Let us pray. Creator of all, we give you thanks and praise that when we were far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ s Body live the risen life; we who drink his Cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise the name of God, through Christ our Redeemer. Amen. Source: CW p. 182 The Blessing Life is short, and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who make the journey with us. So be swift to love, and make haste to be kind. And the blessing of God, who made us, who loves us, and who travels with us be with you now and for ever. Amen. Source: The Rt. Rev. Stephen T. Lane, 2010; based on the words of Henri Frédéric Amiel ( ) 10

SERVICE PARTICIPANTS CELEBRANT, DEACON, AND PREACHER: The Rev. Elizabeth Blunt The image on the bulletin cover is the Trinity Seal. Inspired by The Revelation to John 10:1 10, it represents the arrival of the first Anglican Church in the colony of New York in The seal features a mighty angel with a face like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire, straddling the sea and the land and transferring the Gospel, brought from England by the ship, to a child, a symbol of the young colony of New York. In the scroll below the angel s feet appear the words JURO TEMPUS NON FORE AMPLIUS which translate as I Swear That There Shall Be No More Delay, referring to the urgency of establishing the Church. Bulletin cover poetry is from the Revised Common Lectionary project sponsored by the Jean and Alexander Heard Library and the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, a division of the Heard Library TRINITY WALL STREET VESTRY William Lupfer, Rector Joseph Hakim, Church Warden; Diane Pollard, Church Warden Leah C.
