Hymn in Procession Hymnal 100 Words: Isaac Watts ( ), alt. Music: Antioch, George Frideric Handel ( ); adapt. and arr. Lowell Mason ( ) Collect of the Day People People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, who wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully restored, the dignity of human nature: Grant that we may share the divine life of him who humbled himself to share our humanity, thy Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 3

The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Jeremiah 31:7-14 Please be seated. Reader People A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. This is what God says: Go ahead and shout for joy and sing happy songs, people. I am going to round everyone up from the farthest parts of the earth--everybody. The ones who can t see and the ones who can t walk, those who are pregnant and those who are right in the middle of having their babies. This is going to be huge! I ll bring them all back home where they belong. They will be weeping for joy as they come. I will let them walk by the beautiful babbling brooks of water, and clear a path for them so they won t stumble and fall. I love you all like a father loves his very first child. Make sure everyone knows what I m doing. Tell them about my goodness, about the grain and the wine and the oil and the little lambs. Tell them that my people will be like a beautiful watered garden that always produces beautiful things to eat. Tell them to dance because, instead of crying, they will be laughing. There will be plenty of dancing and laughter and good food to go around. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Please stand as you are able. Hymnal 101 Words: Traditional carol Music: Cradle Song, melody William James Kirkpatrick ( ); harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) 4

The Holy Gospel Luke 2:41-52 Deacon People Deacon People The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Each year Jesus and his parents walked to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. When Jesus was twelve, and they were in Jerusalem, they started to go home after the festivities. They walked for a whole day before they realized Jesus wasn t with either. They looked for him for three days but couldn t find him anywhere. So they went back to Jerusalem. They found him in the temple, listening to the teachers there and asking them questions. Apparently everyone who heard him talk was amazed at how bright he was. His parents weren t happy with him though. His mother said, I can t believe you, Jesus! What were you thinking? Your father and I have been worried sick about you because we had no idea where you were. Jesus said, You could have figured I d be at my Father s house. Mary and Joseph didn t quite get what he meant by that. They all left then, and returned to Nazareth where Jesus was a very good son. His mother loved him very much and kept all these little stories about him in her heart, like any mother does. As Jesus grew older, he grew wiser too, and became more and more the person God and his parents wanted him to be. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Kristin Kaulbach Miles 5

The Great Thanksgiving People People People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. In him the light which shines for all has come into the world, and he has become one with us that we may become one with you. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing: Sanctus 8

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and preapred the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body an Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unitiy of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. All All Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 10

Fraction The breaks the bread. People Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Gifts of God for the People of God. All who hunger for God are cordially invited to this table, including children. You may stand or kneel to receive communion. You may consume the bread and then drink from the chalice (please grasp the bottom of the chalice to guide it to your lips). Also, you may dip the bread in the wine and then consume it, or you may leave the bread in your palm for the chalice-bearer to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. Gluten-free wafers are available; please indicate to the priest that you require this alternative, and the gluten-free paten will be brought to you. Those who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. Communion Anthem Post-Communion Prayer Please stand as you are able. Let us pray. Concluding Rite All God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Christmas Blessing People May Christ, who by his Incarnation gathered into one things earthly and heavenly, fill you with his joy and peace; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. 11

Closing Hymn Words: John Mason Neale ( ), alt. Music: In dulci jubilo, German carol, 14th cent.; harm. Charles Winfred Douglas ( ) Dismissal Deacon Let us go forth into the world rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. People Thanks be to God. 12
