The Second Sunday of Advent 9:15am Holy Eucharist Rite II December 6, 2015 At the sound of the bell, please stand as you are able. Acclamation The Entrance Rite Celebrant Blessed are you, holy and living One. You come to your people and set them free. Hymn in Procession Hymnal 56 Words: Latin, ca. 9th cent.; ver. 4 Collect of the Day Celebrant Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Baruch 5:1-9 Please be seated. Reader A Reading from the Book of Baruch. You don t need to wear sadness like a jacket anymore, Jerusalem. Put on the beauty of God s glory instead and wear it forever. God will give you a robe of righteousness to wear. And a tiara glowing with God s goondess will be put on top of your head. God will show your beauty to everyone under the sun. And God will give you a new name, Righteous Peace, Godly Glory. Stand up tall, Jerusalem. If you look to the east you will see all your children gathered because God called them together. They will rejoice that God has remembered them. Their enemies had taken them away, but God will bring them back to you as he promised like kings carried in glory on their royal thrones. God has ordered all the highest mountains to be lowered. And the valleys will be filled up to make the ground level. That way, Israel can walk back safely to where she belongs. The forests will provide shade for her at God s command. And God will be leading the parade back to Jerusalem with the light of his goodness that makes him glow from the inside. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

Gospel Acclamation Please stand as you are able. Wonder, Love, and Praise Hymnal 844 Music: Mode 1 melody; Richard Fabian (b. 1942) All Saints Company The Holy Gospel Luke 3:1-6 Deacon Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Tiberius had been emperor for fifteen years, and when Herod was the governor in Galilee, the Word of God came to John who lived in the wilderness. He wandered all over the region by the Jordan River, telling people to be baptized and wash themselves of their sin. The prophet Isaiah talked about him a long time ago: I hear a voice crying out in the desert, Get ready for God to come. Straighten the paths. Build up the valleys and lower the mountaintops. Make the crooked places straight and the rocky roads smooth. Then everyone will see God s salvation. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon Hershey Mallette Stephens 5

Nicene Creed Please stand as you are able. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) 1993 Hope Publishing, Inc. Used by permission. Music: Nettleton, Melody from A Repository of Sacred Music, Part II,

Prayers of the Reader Reader Reader Reader Reader Celebrant O God, we wait in expectation for all the wonders you perform in this world. We pray for all people of the earth; grant that those who seek you will find you. Come, O God of Hope. Draw your Church together in unity, mission and service to care for each other, the earth, and all of your creation. Come, O God of Peace. We pray for all our familes large and small; where they are strong, continue to stengthen them; where they are weak, bind them and restore them. Come, O God of Love. We pray for all who are hurting or suffering, especially those we name aloud now. Help us to be your hands, and to hold them close. Come, O God of Comfort. We pray for those we love but see no longer, remembering that the love between us does not die, because of the One whose birth we await. Come, O God of Joy. Hasten, O Father, the coming of your kingdom; and grant that we your servants, who now live by faith, may with joy behold your Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. The Peace The Holy Eucharist Please stand as you are able. Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The greet one another in the name of the Lord. Please be seated. Welcome Special Music 7

Presentation Hymn Please stand as you are able as the offering is brought forward. Hymnal 380 Words: Isaac Watts ( ), para. of Psalm 117. St. 3, Thomas Ken ( ) Music: Old 100th, melody from Pseaumes octante trois de David, 1551, alt.; harm. after Louis Bourgeois (1510?-1561?) 8

The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant Sanctus The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing: \ Setting: Music: From A Community Mass; Richard Proulx ( ) 1971, 1977 GIA Publications, Inc. 9

Celebrant All Celebrant All Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless to his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with Joseph, Mary, and all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 10

Fraction The Celebrant breaks the bread. Celebrant Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Celebrant The Gifts of God for the of God. All who hunger for God are cordially invited to this table, including children. You may stand or kneel to receive communion. You may consume the bread and then drink from the chalice (please grasp the bottom of the chalice to guide it to your lips). Also, you may dip the bread in the wine and then consume it, or you may leave the bread in your palm for the chalice-bearer to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. Gluten-free wafers are available; please indicate to the priest that you require this alternative, and the gluten-free paten will be brought to you. Those who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. Communion Anthem Post-Communion Prayer Please stand as you are able. Celebrant All Let us pray. Advent Blessing Celebrant Concluding Rite God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. May the Sun of Righteousness shine upon you and scatter the darkness from before your path; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. 11

Closing Hymn Hymnal 65 Words: Frans Mikael Franzen ( ); tr. composite; adapt. Charles P. Price ( ) 1982, Charles P Price. Music: Bereden väg för Herran, melody from Then Swenska Psalmboken, 1697 Dismissal Deacon Let us go forth into the world rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Thanks be to God. 12
