The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II, Proper 22 October 2, 2016, 8am St. Paul s Chapel For a World of Good Broadway and Fulton Street, New York City God, the refuge of wanderers and exiles, the mother and father of the homeless, you weep with those who are uprooted from their homeland, and you suffer with those who exist without shelter and security. Grant that your faithful love may reach out, and that your healing mercy rise like the dawn on all who are oppressed. We ask this through Jesus, your Son, who knew hardship and died outside the city wall. Amen.

The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist Rite II, Proper 22 October 2, 2016, 8am Welcome to St. Paul s Chapel Please add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus Table, and everyone s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together. About this Service This is a service of Holy Eucharist according to Rite II, which begins on page 355 of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Scripture readings are appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) and are from the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the Bible. The Prayers of the and other service elements usually taken from the BCP may also come from additional sources as noted, including Enriching Our Worship (EOW). The Entrance Rite Acclamation EOW p. 50 The altar party is seated informally. Please stand as you are able when the rises. Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. Collect for Purity BCP p. 355 Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Song of Praise BCP p. 356 All Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. 2

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect of the Day BCP p. 234 All Please be seated. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Lamentations 1:1-6 Reader A Reading from the Book of Lamentations. How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting-place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the LORD has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

The Psalm Psalm 137:1-8 Reader Let us read from Psalm 137 in unison. All By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept, * when we remembered you, O Zion. As for our harps, we hung them up * on the trees in the midst of that land. For those who led us away captive asked us for a song, and our oppressors called for mirth: * Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the LORD s song * upon an alien soil? If I forget you, O Jerusalem, * let my right hand forget its skill. Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, * if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy. Remember the day of Jerusalem, O LORD, against the people of Edom, * who said, Down with it! down with it! even to the ground! O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, * happy the one who pays you back for what you have done to us! The Second Reading 2 Timothy 1:1-14 Reader A Reading from the second letter to Timothy. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I am grateful to God whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But 4

I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Holy Gospel Luke 17:5-10 Please stand as you are able. Deacon Deacon The Sermon Silence follows the sermon. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. The apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith! The Lord replied, If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you. Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, Come here at once and take your place at the table? Would you not rather say to him, Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done! The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Rev. Daniel Simons The Nicene Creed BCP p. 358 Please stand as you are able. All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. 5

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the Form IV BCP p. 388 Reader Reader Reader Reader Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. 6

Reader Reader Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. Source: BCP p. 395 Confession and Absolution BCP p. 360 Deacon All Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 7

The Peace The Holy Eucharist The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The greet one another in the name of the Lord. Welcome Please be seated. The Offertory An usher collects the offering. At the Presentation Please stand as you are able as the offering is brought forward. The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer A BCP p. 361 Sanctus All The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. 8

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer BCP p. 364 All And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Fraction BCP p. 364 The breaks the consecrated Bread. Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The Gifts of God for the of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. All who hunger for God are cordially invited to this table, including children. You may consume the bread and then drink from the chalice (please grasp the bottom of the chalice to guide it to your lips). Also, you may dip the bread in the wine and then consume it, or you may leave the bread in your palm for the chalice-bearer to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. 10 Concluding Rite Post-Communion Prayer BCP p. 365 Please stand as you are able. All Let us pray. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. 17 chapel welcomed its first worshipers. In addition to the prayer service, St. Paul s celebration will include a special historical walking tour, a reception, and a lecture. You re invited to attend any and all portions of the day. Other 250th anniversary events will be held throughout the year. More information may be found at trinitywallstreet.org. Fall Fair Noon-4pm, November 5, St. Paul s Chapel Spend a fun-filled afternoon with family and friends at a Colonial America themed festival, hosted by Children, Youth, and Families and open to all. Enjoy arts and crafts, games, folk music, storytelling, food, and more! Information: Summerlee Staten at sstaten@trinitywallstreet.org or Spa for the Soul: Decluttering 10am-3pm, Nov. 12, Parish Center, 2 Rector St. Decluttering as a Spiritual Practice with Kathy Bozzuti-Jones and the Rev. Beth Gavin, interfaith spiritual counselor. Decluttering with intention can be a spiritual practice; attention to what we hold in excess can grow and change us in ways that bring us closer to God. Join us as we reflect on attachments, grace, and the freedom of simplicity. Together, we will explore what enough feels like, why it can be difficult to let go, and the possibility of engaging our spiritual selves in clearing more room to receive God s abundance. Come away with a renewed desire to exchange love through giving and a practical plan for making your home and your heart into your sanctuary. Fee: $25 includes lunch. Registration: ChristianFormation@trinitywallstreet.org. 11th Annual 12-Step Recovery Retreat December 2-4, St. Marguerite s Retreat House A retreat for Trinity parishioners who are or have been involved with a 12-Step program, held at St. Marguerite s Retreat House, Community of St. John Baptist, Mendham, NJ, facilitated by the Rev. Stuart Hoke, ThD. Retreat cost is $225 for a private room and includes two nights accommodations and meals. Information: Sandy Blaine at sdblaine1014@ gmail.com or Keisha Joseph at kjoseph@trinitywallstreet.org. Care for Caregivers 11:30am-3pm, December 3, Parish Center An Afternoon of Reflection and Replenishment. Be replenished by the sharing of a meal, the catching of your breath, the comfort of prayer, and practices of resting in the presence of God. Join the Rev. Kristin Kaulbach Miles and therapist Sarah McCaslin for a restorative experience especially for those who provide care to loved ones suffering from chronic illness. Space is limited; RSVP by November 23. Information: Ellen Andrews at eandrews@trinitywallstreet.org or Trinity Institute March 2017 Water Justice: A Global Theological Conference Water is an ancient gift and the source of life, needed by all for nourishment and survival. Trinity is working with a dynamic group of global partners to host a conference infused with spiritual principles and common prayer along with science and solutions. To register, visit TI2017.org. BULLETIN BOARD 2017 Stewardship Campaign The 2017 giving drive will launch next week, on Sunday, October 9, so please watch your mail for the new stewardship brochure and pledge card. The goal for 2017 is to increase the number of pledgers and households by 50%. If you have any questions about renewing your pledge or making a new pledge at Trinity, please ask a member of the Stewardship Committee. They re wearing buttons that say Ask me about stewardship. St. Paul s Chapel Restoration Update From the Vicar: As you are aware, St. Paul s Chapel is undergoing an extensive restoration to the historic, 250-year-old building. Understanding the importance of St. Paul s to our worshiping community and visitors alike, we have worked to keep the chapel open during this process. However, after extensive conversations with our contractors about safety, we now have decided to close the chapel temporarily until restoration is finished. This temporary closure will allow the work to be accomplished in the safest possible manner. Importantly, please know that regularly scheduled worship services will take place in the churchyard or at 14 Vesey St. in case of inclement weather. Compline will be held at Trinity Church. Keep up on the progress of the restoration at trinitywallstreet.org. New Social Work Consultant Welcome to Kristy Aristy, a Social Work consultant working with Trinity now through December. She will be available Wednesdays 10am 5pm and Sundays 8am 4pm. The objectives of her role include the 17

following: community assessment, including interviews and observations with parishioners, local community, and parish staff; providing direct services/referrals for community/parishioners in need; providing trainings to enhance our community. Contact her at trinitywallstreet.org to set up an introduction. Limited Openings at Trinity Preschool Trinity Preschool has several openings left for toddlers and preschoolers for the school year. Now located at 50 Park Place, Trinity Preschool is founded on the principles of hospitality and community. The preschool provides year-round, full-day care for children 3 months through 5 years of age. To schedule a tour visit trinitypreschoolnyc.org. Congregational Voice I may be able to speak the languages of human beings and even of angels, but if I have no love, my speech is no more than a noisy gong or a clanging bell. I may have the gift of inspired preaching; I may have all knowledge and understand all secrets; I may have the faith needed to move mountains but if I have no love, I am nothing. I may give away everything I have, and even give up my body to be burned but if I have no love, this does me no good (1 Corinthians, 13:1-13). I like this verse because God is love and he who knows God, knows love. John Robbins Prayer Requests Prayer requests may be found on a separate card printed weekly and located at the back of the churches. To add names to the list, worshipbulletin@trinitywallstreet.org. Flower Donations Have flowers dedicated in honor or memory of a loved one or in celebration of a life event. A suggested donation of $150 to the Trinity Flower Fund begins the process. Information: flowers@trinitywallstreet.org. 20 SERVICE PARTICIPANTS CELEBRANT, DEACON, AND PREACHER: The Rev. Daniel Simons The image on the bulletin cover is the Trinity Seal. Inspired by The Revelation to John 10:1 10, it represents the arrival of the first Anglican Church in the colony of New York in The seal features a mighty angel with a face like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire, straddling the sea and the land and transferring the Gospel, brought from England by the ship, to a child, a symbol of the young colony of New York. In the scroll below the angel s feet appear the words JURO TEMPUS NON FORE AMPLIUS which translate as I Swear That There Shall Be No More Delay, referring to the urgency of establishing the Church.
