Prayers of the People Youth of Trinity Sunday School Intercessor Today s prayers will be offered in the form of the Five Finger Prayer. If you hold out your hand, you can follow along, finger by finger. The response is: Hear our prayer. We pray for those closest to us: Thumb The thumb is the finger closest to you, so we pray for those who are closest to us, such as our mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, stepparents, stepsisters, stepbrothers, grandparents, godparents, and especially for our sister, Shimmer and her family. Who else close to you needs our prayers? Please answer aloud or in silence. Silence All Intercessor Let us pray to the Lord saying: Hear our prayer. We pray for those who point the way for us: Index finger - This is our pointing finger, so we pray for those who point the way for us, such as parents, teachers, clergy, policemen and women, firemen and women, security guards, bus drivers, crossing guards, and elders. Who else that points the way and needs our prayers? Please answer aloud or in silence. Silence All Intercessor Let us pray to the Lord saying: Hear our prayer. We pray for those with big responsibilities: Middle finger - This is the biggest finger of all, so we pray for those with big responsibilities, like our president, government leaders, state and city leaders, Bishops, Archbishops, Rectors, Vicars, and others who lead and guide us. Who else with big responsibilities needs our prayers? Silence All Intercessor Let us pray to the Lord saying: Hear our prayer. We pray for those who are vulnerable and forgotten: Fourth finger - This is the weakest of all our fingers, so we pray for those who are weak. We pray for those who are sick, or sad, or alone; for those who are in hospitals and rest homes, as well as those who are poor, hungry, and forgotten. We pray for people who are disabled, physically and mentally. We also pray for those who have died and those who mourn them. Who else facing a tough situation needs our prayers? Silence All Let us pray to the Lord saying: Hear our prayer. 2
Intercessor We pray now for our own needs and thank God for the many blessings we have received: Little finger - This is the little finger and it comes last. We now pray for ourselves and, as our hands are now fully open, let us shake them in the air and thank God for our many generous blessings! What else do you want to thank God for? Silence All Let us pray to the Lord saying: Hear our prayer. The Celebrant adds a concluding prayer. The Peace standing Celebrant People The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Share a sign of peace of Christ (a handshake, hug, kiss or other blessing) with your family and those near you. Announcements seated Offering Sunday School Contact me cards, found in the children s gift bags, may be placed in the plate, along with offerings for the work of the church. Anthem Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day arr. Barry Rose Tomorrow shall be my dancing day; I would my true love did so chance to see the legend of my play, to call my true love to my dance; Sing, oh! my love, oh! my love, my love, my love, this have I done for my true love. Then was I born of a virgin pure, of her I took fleshly substance thus was I knit to man s nature to call my true love to my dance. In a manger laid, and wrapped I was so very poor, this was my chance betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass to call my true love to my dance. The Holy Communion Holy Communion at Trinity is open to everyone, from the youngest child to the oldest adult. The Great Thanksgiving standing Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. The prayer continues Celebrant Loving God, You brought us here together so that we can give you thanks for all the blessings of this life. People We give you thanks, O God. 3
The prayer continues until Celebrant With Jesus and with the angels and saints we sing your praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord Setting: From Deutsche Messe, Franz Peter Schubert ( ); arr. The prayer continues until Celebrant May Christ be born anew in our hearts, may he be the light that shines in the darkness. People We give you thanks, O God. Celebrant As we stand at the manger, may we one day stand at your heavenly throne with the blessed Virgin Mary, blessed Joseph, and all your saints. All this we ask through Jesus, and in the joy of the Holy Spirit we praise you. People We give you thanks, O God. Amen. 4
The Lord s Prayer Celebrant People As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant This is the true bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. People Whoever eats this bread will live for ever. Communion As you come forward, please hold your hands out in front of you to receive the Bread. When the Wine is presented to you, please guide the chalice to your lips. To receive a blessing instead of bread and wine, signal the priest by crossing your arms across your chest. Anthem Still, Still, Still arr. Barry Rose Still, still, still, Weil s Kindlein schlafen will. Die Englein tun schön jubilieren, Bei dem Kripplein musizieren. Still, still, still, Weil s Kindlein schlafen will. Schlaf, schlaf, schlaf, Mein liebes Kindlein schlaf! Maria tut dich niedersingen Und ihr treues Herz darbringen. Schlaf, schlaf, schlaf, Mein liebes Kindlein schlaf! Groß, groß, groß Die Lieb ist übergroß! Gott hat den Himmelsthron verlassen Und muss reisen auf der Straßen. Groß, groß, groß Die Lieb ist übergroß. Salzburger Volkslieder Aus Salzburg, 1819 Still, still, still, Cause baby wants to sleep. The angels jubilate beautifully, By the manger making music. Still, still, still, Cause baby wants to sleep. Sleep, sleep, sleep, My dear babe sleep! Maria sings you a lullaby And brings you her true heart. Sleep, sleep, sleep, My dear babe sleep! Great, great, great, The love is more than great! God has left his throne And must go by road. Great, great, great, The love is more than great. 5
Communion Hymns sung by all Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, and stay by my side until morning is nigh. Concluding Rite Go, tell it on the mountain over the hills and everywhere; go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born. While shepherds kept their watching o er silent flocks by night, Behold throughout the heavens there shown a holy light. Refrain The shepherds feared and trembled, when lo! above the earth, Rang out the angel chorus that hailed the Savior s birth. Refrain The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, on a cold winter s night that was so deep. Refrain Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Refrain Prayer after Communion said by all, standing Loving God, you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood. As we stand at the manger and worship your Son, fill us with the message of the angels, so that we may be messengers of your love and graciousness to the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6
Christmas Blessing The Priest prays a blessing over the People. Closing Hymn standing Joy to the world! the Lord is come: let earth receive her King; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing. Joy to the world! the Savior reigns; let us our songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains, repeat the sounding joy. Dismissal Celebrant People Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Christmas Day service is at 11:15am at Trinity Church. 7
