Loving God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ draws the whole world to himself in one human family: Mercifully grant that we may have grace to see, to hear, and to embrace all people as brothers and sisters in you. You laid down your life in love because you care about how we feel and how we struggle. Open our hearts to love like you. In your name we pray. Amen. The are seated. Liturgy of the Word The Gospel Adapted from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John Each week, we read from the part of the Bible that tells the story of Jesus life and teachings. Today, we tell about what happened near the end of his life. Following the reading Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Anthem Were You There? Homily The Rector Prayers of the and Confession We pray for ourselves, for the ones we love, and especially for those who hurt us. We give thanks, and we ask for the things we need and for the needs of others. We say we are sorry, and remember that we are forgiven. The children gather towards the center of the gathering for a reconciliation ritual. We are God s children, blessed and forgiven. Let us now hold our stones to our hearts. The stones help us remember the things we do that hurt those we love or even ourselves. God have mercy. God have mercy. We often hurt those we most love. We often hurt those we most love. Through the water of our baptism, God forgives us and loves us. As this holy water washes these stones, God washes away our hurts. Know that you are forgiven; be at peace. Amen. Sharing the Peace Now that we have heard the teachings of Jesus, and have prayed for one another, and before we share Communion, we express our love towards one another by sharing a sign of Christ s peace. Presider All share a sign of Peace. Christ is among us making peace; share that Peace with those around you. The Peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. The children return to their parents during the Peace. We Receive Holy Communion Today, we remember the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his friends by taking Communion together. We recognize our oneness with Christ and with our neighbors by sharing the bread and wine. Good Friday is the one day of the year when we do not say the Eucharistic (Thanksgiving) Prayer. The Lord s Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. All are welcome to come forward to receive the bread and wine blessed at the Maundy Thursday service. 2

5 Communion Music Anthem There s a Wideness in God s Mercy Calvin Hampton ( ) There s a wideness in God s mercy like the wideness of the sea; there s a kindness in his justice, which is more than liberty. There is welcome for the sinner, and more graces for the good; there is mercy with the Savior; there is healing in his blood. There is no place where earth s sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth s ailings have such kindly judgment given. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head. For the love of God is broader than the measure of the mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more faithful, we should take him at his word; and our life would be thanksgiving for the goodness of the Lord. Dismissal Now that we have heard the story of Jesus, prayed for the world, and shared in Communion, it is time for us to go back out in the world to continue telling and living the story of Jesus and his church.
