If you are new to St. Luke s please do make yourself known to the ministers or a member of the Welcome Team, who can give you a contact card to complete. Please do join us after the 10am service for coffee, which today is served in the Parish Centre. You might like to know that our children s area is at the front with toys and books for restless little people. Do feel free to sit there with your children. we have large print orders of service and hymn books. If you would like one please ask someone wearing a name badge. we have a loop system for those using hearing aids. the toilets are through the double doors at the front of church. if you would like to receive an intincted wafer at communion please let one of the ministry team know before the service and come to the south side of the altar. we have many activities going on during the week. For a full list please ask a person with a name badge - or take a Parish Directory from the leaflet trolley. we send out a weekly update. If you would like one please the Parish Office on admin@stlukeschurchmaidenhead.org.uk Quiet Space: The Chapel is available for anyone who wishes to have quiet space to pray before or after services. Please feel free to use it and enter via the choir stalls door. 2 The Bible readings for the Second Sunday before Lent are: A Reading from the Second Book of Kings When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here; for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel. But Elisha said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you? And he said, Yes, I know; keep silent. Elijah said to him, Elisha, stay here; for the LORD has sent me to Jericho. But he said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you? And he answered, Yes, I know; be silent. Then Elijah said to him, Stay here; for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan. But he said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you. Elisha said, Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit. He responded, You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not. As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen! But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 2 Kings

3 A Reading from the Second Epistle to the Corinthians Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians A Reading from the Gospel of Mark Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him! Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. Mark The Collect Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 3 Post Communion Prayer Holy God, we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ: may we who are partakers at his table reflect his life in word and deed, that all the world may know his power to change and save. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Messy Church: Do come along to enjoy craft, simple worship and a two-course meal. This year we have a grant which means we can offer Messy Church free to all (but welcome donations to the general fund). Fun for all the family pm. Please take one and join in with what you can. Lent course: Living Reconciliation, by Phil Groves and Angharad Parry Jones... more soon but we will be studying this book. If you would like to buy one at the reduced price of 6, copies can be obtained via Terrie Robinson, please sign up in church TODAY. Celebration of Love Service: this annual service is on Sunday 22nd February at 4.45 pm, preceded by tea in the parish centre at 4 pm. As usual we have invited all those who were married here last year as well as those to be married here this year. Everyone is warmly invited to this service and tea and if you would like to bring your own wedding photos (however long ago it took place) or photos of love, then please do so. Women s World Day of Prayer: Service at Salvation Army Citadel in East Road, 2pm on Friday 6th March. It has been prepared by the women of the Bahamas. Whilst women's issues are dealt with, men do come to the services and are very welcome. The speaker is Mr Richard Poad, who has family and has lived in the Bahamas, and still visits regularly, so the talk promises to be relevant and interesting. Crèche available; refreshments served afterwards. (Small car park next to the Citadel and some street parking nearby). Please come if you can. Gill Curry and Ruth Sheppard will be pleased to give more details. St. Paul s Forum is a variety of public events at St. Paul s cathedral in London. I intend to hear Barbara Brown Taylor speak on learning to walk in the dark on Thurs 9th July (6.30 pm). if you would like to join me let me know admission is free but you have to register. Sally 4

5 INFORMATION: Electoral Roll (and other rolls!!) I think there is some confusion about all the rolls the church holds, so here is a brief explanation!! The Pastoral Roll is the basic information that we hold about folk who fill in the welcome cards names and contact details. Every person on the Pastoral Roll has a contactor who keeps them in touch with what is going on in church and, for regular attendees, should ring to check they are ok if they ve not been around for a few weeks (or alert Sue, our Pastoral Coordinator). There are currently 178 surnames on the Roll so even more if you then add couples and families individually. The Baptism Roll is our database of everyone (of whatever age) who has been baptised in the last 5 years and their (usually) parent s contact details. Every child on the Baptism Roll also has a contactor (if the family is on the Pastoral Roll too this should be the same person). The Baptism Contactor delivers baptism anniversary cards and also keeps the family in touch with the church and vice versa. The Electoral Roll is, in effect, the official list of church members. To be on this Roll you need to complete an official CofE form available from Jill Bevitt or church. Being on the Electoral Roll entitles you to vote at the church AGM and to stand as a candidate to serve on the PCC. There is no cost to this but it is the numbers on this Roll that are reported annually to the central Church. To be on the Roll you must attend church regularly and / or live in the parish (for six months). If you are not sure which Roll you are on please ask Revd. Sally or Sue Hinchliffe, or Mary or Ruth in the office. I would strongly encourage anyone who is not on the Electoral Roll to join. Sally Church Care Day (14th Feb): Many thanks to all who took part and to those who carry out work at other times. Contactors Meeting: There will be a meeting for all contactors on Thursday 26th February at 8pm, meeting in the Parish Centre. Could all contactors please try to attend as the next meeting will not be until October. Any problems please contact Sue after the 19th. Thank you. Advertiser and Sainsbury s School Vouchers: the Advertiser is printing vouchers for schools once more. If you can possibly collect them for St Luke s Primary School it would be greatly appreciated. Please place them in the container in the church by the office. Many thanks. Date change: with apologies we are going to do a little date changing later this year so the Summer Fair will move from 25th to 11th July and the Messy Church / Baptism party form 11th to 12th July. Please amend your dairies. Real Easter Eggs are now available to purchase by ordering online / by post or looking out in Waitrose, Tesco and Morrison s. Details at the back of church. SOCIAL and FUNDRAISING: Pancake Party: Our annual Pancake Party will be on Shrove Tuesday, 17th February, in the Parish Centre from pm. All welcome to come along to enjoy pancakes and have a go at tossing them. If anyone would like to help with this occasion, please contact Sonya on

6 Mendelssohn s Elijah : John Cotterill will conduct the Norden Farm Festival Chorus and Orchestra in a performance of this epic masterpiece with its abundant melody and drama on Sunday afternoon, 1st March, at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts starting at 3 pm. The professional soloists will include the outstanding young bass-baritone, Bradley Travis, who will be singing the title role for the first time. Leaflets are at the back of church. Tickets from Norden Farm box office: Ladies Breakfast: The next one is Saturday 14th March with doors opening at 8.45am. Tickets are 5 and are now available. Speaker: Shula Tajima. Friendship Project: meets in the Parish Centre on Thursday mornings at 11am and is an opportunity for folk to get together to have coffee, chat, hear a speaker from time to time and share a light lunch. Everyone is warmly invited to weekly meetings, for which there is a 1 charge per session. If you know of anyone else who you think would benefit (lonely, elderly, etc) please do invite them, or even better bring them along. Theatre trips to Wycombe Swan: I have made group bookings for the following shows in the Spring season at Wycombe Swan. WIDER COMMUNITY: Kori: Ebola has now reached the Kori district of Sierra Leone and as the possessions of those who have died as a result of this infection have to be burned, they are in desperate need of blankets, hats and gloves. If you are able to spare time to knit or crochet something to send it would be very gratefully received. Please see Gill Curry for details. Stitch-Up for Kori: The next stitch-up at St Luke s is on Monday 9th March, 2-4pm in the Parish Centre. Come along to stitch, crochet or knit, and also enjoy tea, coffee and cake and a good chat. Emergency Good Neighbours: Want to do Something Good this New Year? WAM Get Involved are working with RBWM to set up an Emergency Good Neighbour Register, where local residents are prepared to be contacted if someone in their area needs emergency assistance. To register, info@wamgetinvolved.org.uk or call Meet your Community Wardens: Every second Tuesday of the month, 11am-12 noon, at the Library, St Ives Road Maidenhead. At the meetings, you can discuss any concerns or issues in your area. 6
