Those desiring to light candles in memory of loved ones or friends are requested to notify the Church Office in advance by noon of Wednesday preceding the Sunday of remembrance. Reverence Required ~ Please be advised that, according to the tradition of the Armenian Church, members of the congregation are strongly reminded to refrain from walking in and out of the

4 Sanctuary while services are in progress. You are especially reminded not to do so during 1) the Chanting of the Gospel, (pg. 17); 2) recitation of the Creed (Havadamk), (pg. 18); 3) the Chalice Procession, (pg ); 4) Hayr Mer (pg 41); 5) the Hymn, Der Voghormya, (pg. 45); and 6) distribution of the Holy Communion, (p. 49). Also, please do not chew gum or cross legs during church services. Please observe the arrows in the new liturgy books. They indicate when you should Stand, Sit, or Kneel. ST. GREGORY MEDAL OR ARARAT AWARD Dear Parents: If you have a child that is in the Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts and would like to earn the Diocesan St. Gregory Medal or the Ararat Award please contact our Pastor, Fr. WOMEN S GUILD The Women's Guild is selling its fabulous Hye Tea Recipe Book Beautifully illustrated with food photos and clip art. Over 50 pages of delicious appetizers, salads, scones, soups, sandwiches and desserts. A great gift at $10 to give to family and friends for birthdays and other special occasions. We have only a limited number of books. See Barbara Hovsepian. ARMENIAN SCHOOL will have a table at the OPEN HOUSE on Sunday, September 10 in the Community Center. Parents can register their children for Armenian School and meet our principal and our teachers. Registration forms will be available at OPEN HOUSE and soon will be posted on the St. Leon website. Kindergarten students must be 5 years of age for both Eastern and Western classes. Older students may join classes appropriate to their age and ability. We hope to see all our students from last term returning and registering at OPEN HOUSE or on our first day of class Friday, September 15. BURNING CANDLES IN THE CHURCH One of the devotional practices in the Armenian Church, as in all Orthodox Churches, is the beautiful custom of burning candles in front of sacred shrines, icons or relics. It is symbolic of the sacrifice of the Christian soul in order shine with divine graces, confident in the example and intercession of the saints. So the candle burns itself up to give out light. Light symbolizes Christ, The Light of the World. When attending the Divine Liturgy on Sunday or any Worship Service, the believer may obtain a candle(s) in the Narthex which

5 is accompanied by a donation. Then, he/she will take their candle to one of the icons in our church. The faithful will then light the candle, make the sign of the cross, say a prayer and return to the pew. During the prayer he/she may ask the intercession of the particular saint in his/her mind which may be represented by the image or relic. DRESS CODE FOR CHURCH AND SUNDAY SCHOOL As we worship in our beloved Armenian Church on Sundays and attend Sunday School, let us be mindful that we are in God s House. Since we are in God s House, it is important that we dress appropriately. The attire (clothing) we wear on Sundays should be in good taste; therefore, any transparent clothes, shorts and skirts with length above the knees, halter and tank tops, spaghetti straps, jeans etc, should be avoided. Bare shoulders should be covered with a shawl. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A VOLUNTEER FOR SUNDAY GREETER AND VOGHCHOON If you are interested in helping on Sunday mornings as a Greeter or Passing the Kiss of Peace, please call the church office Frequency depends on rotation, not more than once every six to eight weeks. SUNDAY SCHOOL Registration is under way! Families will receive the registration form via . New families that will be joining our Sunday School in the fall may find the registration in the Lradoo or the Narthex of the Church. Along with registration all families are required to volunteer as a helper for two Sunday School activities. You will receive an attachment with the various choices. 6 Urgent Alert An Emergency for Our Houston Parish. This is a follow up to our directive of Monday, August 28, on Hurricane Harvey and the flood disaster in Houston, TX. At that time, we were hopeful that conditions had reached their lowest point and would begin to improve. Regrettably, the situation has gotten significantly worse in the subsequent days. As our entire country has witnessed with dismay, the flooding in Houston has now become one of worst natural disasters in U.S. history. I want to inform our Diocesan leadership that our St. Kevork Armenian Church community has not been spared in this devastation. Parishioners have been severely affected, and many Armenian families have been displaced by Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. Family homes have become uninhabitable; their belongings lost. St. Kevork s pastor, the Rev. Fr. Martiros Hakobyan, along with Parish Council Chair Areg Sahakian, have been canvassing their fellow parishioners, and estimate at this time that fully a quarter of the families have experienced adversity that will have an impact for months to come and probably longer. In our contacts with Der Martiros and Areg, both have been models of grace and composure even under the severe conditions they are experiencing. Today they made a plea to our brothers and sisters throughout the Eastern Diocese to help the St. Kevork community in its time of dire need. So with this directive, I am calling on all our Diocesan parishes to hold special collections during badarak for each of the Sundays of September starting September 3, and continuing on September 10, 17, and 24 to help provide relief to the affected people of the St. Kevork Church.

7 Checks should be made out to the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (630 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10016), with the memo: St. Kevork Flood Relief. Time is of the essence, so please do not delay in sending collected funds to the Diocesan Center. Please send the September 3 collection to arrive by September 7, so we can begin to release funds to the parish and its people. Parishes should try to send additional funds within a week after they ve been collected. The Diocese will be transferring funds to the Houston parish every few days, as these arrive. For the immediate term, our focus as an institution needs to be on our fellow parishioners in Houston. But please recognize that this is a disaster of national proportions, and we encourage everyone to help with the general relief effort to our fellow American citizens. Most of all, we must not allow ourselves to be demoralized at a time like this. To the contrary, at such times we are given a powerful opportunity to help our fellow man to truly enact the Christian virtues of charity, outreach to those in need, and prayer that God will deliver His people from affliction. Let us all renew these virtues in our hearts, during the coming weeks and beyond. With prayers, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian Primate WAKE AND FUNERAL AT ST. LEON ARMENIAN CHURCH Rev. Fr. Arnak Kasparian passed away on Monday, August 28, His wake will be on Monday September 11, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 PM, 6:00-9:00 PM. Dahn gark (wake) service will be at 8 PM. Divine Liturgy and Final Anointing will be held on Tuesday September 12, 2017 beginning at 10:30 AM Interment will be at George Washington Cemetery in Paramus, followed by a Hokejash at Leon Abajian Hall. 17 HOLY WEEK & EASTER IN JERUSALEM The Eastern Diocese announced a pilgrimage to the Holy Land for the spring of The pilgrimage is the culmination of the Diocese s Save the Tomb campaign in support of the restoration of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The dates of the pilgrimage are April 3-14, Participants will spend Holy Week and Easter in Jerusalem and its environs, and will worship at the newly restored Tomb of Christ in the Holy Sepulchre.
