1 March 17, 2007 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Habemus Papam POPE FRANCIS Elected the 266 TH Pope on March 13, 2013 First Non-European Pope; First Latin American Pope; First from Argentina; First Jesuit Pope; First Pope to take the name: Francis Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, by choosing the name Francis, after Saint Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Italy, is sending a signal that it will not be business as usual. Saint Francis of Asissi is the spiritual symbol of prayer, intimacy with the Lord, compassionate love, poverty, simplicity, humility, Church Reform and Church Rebuilding. In the very first instant as he stepped into the limelight of the Church and into history forever, Pope Francis s demeanor was humble and simple. His first work or act as pope was to lead the world into prayerful silence, to thank and ask God s blessing on his predecessor Benedict XVI, Pope Emeritus and then he humbly bowed his head to ask for the people, the church, to pray and ask God s blessing on himself and his papacy. After that he offered his first Urbi & Orbi Blessing and plenary indulgence to the City of Rome, the Church and the world. VIVA LA PAPA! LONG LIVE THE POPE!
2 March 17, th Sunday of Lent HAVE A BLESSED ST. PATRICK S & ST. JOSEPH S FEAST DAY I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him. (Phil: 3:8-9) SAINT PATRICK S FEAST: MARCH 17 th The Butler s Lives of Saints records that in his apostolate of less than thirty years, Patrick had converted Ireland as a whole to Christianity. This great missionary bishop is said to have performed 1000 miracles, raised 39 individuals from the dead and consecrated 350 bishops, erected 700 churches and ordained 5000 priests! Butler notes that apparently the secret of Patrick s inexhaustible courage and determination to bring people to God came from his deep love for God. The saint describes this passionate love and faith in these words, constantly I used to pray in the daytime,... so that in a single day I said as many as a hundred prayers and at night nearly as many,... nor was there any tepidity in me. Legend has it that he commanded all the snakes to leave Ireland and they did! (There are no snakes to be found in Ireland till this day) In his writing called Confessions, he writes, I have cast myself into the hands of Almighty God, for he rules everything,... and he himself will sustain thee. St. Patrick is a very popular saint. The most renowned saint is our Blessed Mother Mary, #2 would be Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) and St. Patrick along with St. Joseph and St. Augustine would vie for 3 rd spot. St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland & Nigeria. SAINT JOSEPH S FEAST: MARCH 19 th We know from the Scriptures that Joseph was a carpenter by trade, and a descendent of the Old Testament King David. St. Joseph was betrothed to a virgin named Mary, and when she became pregnant without sexual intercourse with him, he intended to divorce her secretly. However, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, telling him that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit, and that Joseph should take Mary as his wife. The angel also instructed Joseph to name the child Jesus. Joseph, being a humble man, obeyed the angel and took Mary as his wife. Various legends have grown-up about St. Joseph, and while non-canonical, and historically suspect, they are interesting. One legend suggests that the high-priest Zechariah told Mary that he was instructed in a revelation to bring together marriageable men and have each man leave his staff in the temple overnight. The husband chosen by God would be revealed through a sign. In the morning, Joseph the Carpenter's staff blossomed, while the other suitors' staffs did not. This was a sign that Mary was to marry Joseph. St. Joseph is a model of humility and holiness, and is a model for fathers everywhere. He cared for the Son of God, despite Jesus not being his own biological Son. His devotion to Mary, despite his suspicions of her infidelity, and his willingness to listen to the angel of God, demonstrate his humility. St. Joseph is a very popular patron saint too. He is the patron saint of the universal Church, patron of priests and fathers; workers and carpenters, the patron of a happy death, expecting mothers, families, and more! MAY GOD BLESS OUR PARISH FAMILIES! St. Patrick & St. Joseph, Pray for us!! Fr. Francis Nigli
